Ollie was awesome. He took us a bit off the beaten path, which was great bc there are so many temples and shrines to see in Kyoto. He took us to spots that were typically less crowded than others and went at the exact pace we wanted. 10/10!

Ayaka was lovely. She contacted us about a week before our trip to find out what we wanted to see and kept to our brief. We visited less known sights with her and later in our trip that she had recommended. We even went to a traditional archery on horseback event which we would definitely never have known about without her. We would highly recommend

We hired Eiji for a half-day tour of Kyoto in early October, 2023. He was excellent! He provided all the information we needed to know before our tour, so we were well prepared for the experience. He took us to multiple shrines and temples, providing terrific historical and religious context at every site. He ably and helpfully answered all of our questions about Japanese culture and etiquette, all with grace and good humor. We were amazed at how much ground we were able to cover in such a short period of time--even working in a couple of breaks for tasty snacks! If you're looking for a professional and comprehensive introduction to Kyoto, we can't recommend Eiji highly enough.

We had a wonderful time with our tour guide, Ted. He was very knowledgeable about the history of Kyoto and showed us around some beautiful places in the Gion District. He also very thoughtfully balanced out the tour by showing us some fun locations for the kids as well as some yummy places to eat in the Nishiki Market. The wagyu beef sushi and fried ice cream were oishīi!!

Shohei Toyoda of Withlocals is the perfect guide. He is smart, articulate, personable. And he is an interesting and accomplished person. He is an expert on Kyoto. His perspective made the sights we visited more meaningful to us. He also gave us great tips on what else to do in Kyoto. And for those for whom this is a consideration, I'll add that his English is, of course, perfect since he grew up in the U.S. Your search for a guide should end now. Hire him.

We spent the day with Ted and he was so great! He was very knowledgeable about the history of the places we were visiting and was very friendly and helpful all throughout the tour. He gave us a bunch of recommendations for the rest of our trip and every place has be great. We highly recommend choosing Ted as your withlocals guide!! Thank you Ted! SUGOI!!

Second time in Kyoto this year and wanted something different. Ted Toyoda was an excellent guide with great English. Visited various shrines and temples that I would never even know existed.

Can’t recommend Eiji’s tour kickstart tour through Kyoto enough! Eiji is thoughtful, kind and funny. His tour was comprehensive - I’m shocked by how much we covered and what I was able to learn in just an hour and a half. His route was fantastic, we went off the beaten path and saw highlights with little to no crowds. He went above and beyond taking excellent photographs and spending time helping me plan my next few days, even sending me links and recommendations based on my interests after the tour. Do yourself a favor and book with Eiji while in Kyoto, it’s a special experience!

Yoshihiro knew how to captivate and could tell a lot about Japan and its culture and religion. Despite the fact that we had studied a lot, we learned a lot from him. We highly recommend the guided tour with Yoshihiro!

This was a great tour for us. We were able to see areas and learn history that we would not have known about on our own. Our host was very kind and wonderful and spoke fluent English, so that was very helpful too (she is not Japanese, but has lived there for many many years). She also answered questions about the culture and helped us with Japanese words and phrases that we wanted to learn as well. Once the tour was over, we chose to stay in the area and spend more time exploring before heading back to the other side of Kyoto, where we were staying. We recommend it!
