Eric met us at our hotel in a part of town he grew up in, thus providing us with interesting historical information about the area.
We had indicated some of the areas we were interested in, and Eric did his best to accommodate us. Of course some of the places we wanted to visit were the most popular. Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine being a good example. Eric was knowledgeable enough to also take us to places that were beautiful but far less busy such as Tofuku-ji temple. WOW!
Eric explained how the economics of the shrines and temples worked. We were able to cover a lot of ground with the judicious use of taxis, which by this time in our travels was a welcome respite for our tired feet.
Kiomuzi dera, busy but worth visiting, Murat-an, a wonderful garden in the middle of town, lunch at a place where you buy a ticket first, were all memorable experiences we would not likely have seen or done on our own.
After many years of traveling, lesson learned, get a guide!

Kazz was so helpful and great, helping us even before the tour with very useful information. He took great pictures of us and we learned a lot about Kyoto and its history! I'm very glad we had him as our tour guide. We were able to cover a lot of sites in a short amount of time and we thoroughly enjoyed our day!!

I enjoy the trip with sumi San. he is patience to explain the touristic sites well and concisely. in addition, he is helpful to take a lot of nice pictures for us on his own initiative. he also tries his best to stick the travel plan even though time is exceeded a bit without expectation to pay. however, I still reimburse him for his good service.

This is a combined review of 3 JGA tours that we took. I would love to review each separately, but TripAdvisor doesn't have that capability, so please bear with me in this endeavor. Spoiler alert: they were all really good -- Tokyo: Michi Tanaka -- Kyoto 1: Kazz (Ryoichi Kazuma) -- Kyoto 2: Eric Tanaka.
Firstly, I some critiques apply to all 3 guides. Each had his own style and approach to touring and Japanese history, so after 3 guides, we felt as if we had a pretty well-rounded view of Japan, it's sites, and it's history.
Before we met each of our guides, they emailed us suggested itineraries but were very flexible when we wanted to alter them to our specific wants and desires.
Each guide arranged the order of our preferred sites so that we could see as much as possible in the 6 hours allotted and explained the background and significance of each site so that we not only saw, but also understood. Because of this, the places that we toured (on our own) in the following days had a much deeper meaning to us because we had a foundation of knowledge to see and interpret new sites.
Specifics, along with the aforementioned comments:
1) Full Day Tour of Tokyo with Michi Tanaka:
Michi guided us on a great tour of Tokyo. He taught us how to navigate the Japanese subway system so that we would be comfortable taking it for the rest of our vacation.
He walked us through many sites in various areas of Tokyo and explained different sites and rituals that we saw in our travels. At the end of the day, we had him leave us at at an area that we hadn't seen during the 6 hours, but he made sure that we knew how to get back to the subway station and exactly what trains to take to get back to our hotel. Perfect!
2) Full Day Tour of Kyoto (Day 1) with Kazz:
We toured Western Kyoto with Kazz. He came up with a tour set after we had told him what were were interested in seeing, but a day or so before our tour, he emailed us to say that he had rearranged the order of things so that the distance between sites would be kept to a minimum.
This showed me that he was focused on making thing most efficient, which I appreciated. Because the sites in western Kyoto are so spread out, we travelled by taxi instead of public transportation so that we could spend more time touring and less time on busses and trains. This was well worth the small cost of taxis because we got to see more, which is what is was all about in the first place.
3) Full Day Tour of Kyoto (Day 2) with Eric Tanaka:
Eric started the day out with an overview of Japanese history (charts and all) and a map of where we would be going throughout the day (Eastern Kyoto). We had read up a bit on the history, but having him start the day this way helped to orient us to the significance of what we were to see, plus it reinforced what we had seen and learned about over the previous few days.
I have to say that each of these guides appeared to have really prepared/studied for our tour so that they would be able to give us as much knowledge as possible.
I must add, here, that it is very important to wear a good pair of sneakers or walking shoes, as we walked approximately 6-7 miles each day.
All in all, each of these experiences made our visit to Japan much more meaningful and enjoyable. We were very glad that we had 3 different guides as each one added something different to our vacation. If we travelled half way around the world to see a country, we wanted to get the most out of the trip. I believe that Michi, Kazz, and Eric did just that. Thank you all!

We had a wonderful tour with our thoughtful and well informed guide, Yuka. She came up with a great schedule for us on our first trip to Kyoto and incorporated a couple additional sites upon our request. She prepared a plan in advance of how we would navigate the train and bus systems to optimize our transportation between the sites. (In retrospect, we might have opted to take taxis to allow even more time to see each place. But I’m any case taking the trains & buses is a good way to become more comfortable taking public transit for future use.) Highly recommend this experience, especially for first timers to Kyoto and/or Japan. Thank you for the amazing tour, Yuka!

Several of the major Kyoto sights are far apart; Hideoshi was a great guide navigating the transit! He was soft-spoken, so sometimes his English was harder to understand, but he was knowledgeable about the sites and very kind!

We saw just about everything we could want of Kyoto with our charming tour guide, Noriko. The tour was very much tailored to our interests and our needs, optimizing the time that we had. Noriko met us at our Osaka hotel and guided us through the local train system, which was extremely helpful. Highly recommended!

I booked this tour well in advance of my visit to Kyoto, and the company confirmed it, only to email me the night before my arrival and tell me that no guide was available and my tour was canceled -- far too late for me to find another tour provider or make other arrangements. Hugely disappointing on this once-in-a-lifetime visit, and I don't understand why, during a non-peak season, the company could not have found another guide.

It was the same for me. It seemed comparible to the others for group rates so I assumed that the guide gets paid as a group of two or more. As an individual you are essentially paying for a group that just happens to be one person. Just my opinion, I can't speak for how they do business.

How much extra is it to hire a car? We are 3 people

We paid 31200 yen for the full time driver. If you don’t have a driver and trying to get in as much as possible each taxi driver will drop you off and you will have to wait awhile at each spot to get another taxi and the taxis get kinda expensive in my opinion. It just made sense to hire someone and as soon as you were done you go to the next spot. Our driver actually tagged along with us and took photos of us while we at each spot we stopped at. I would just reach out to your guide as ask them to handle hiring a driver for the day.
