My wife and I have just returned from an amazing cultural and wildlife experience on the Mercury Holidays Grand tour of North India.
India is a country of huge size and cultural diversity ranging from the extreme wealth and opulence of the Taj Mahal at Agra and Golden Temple of Amritsar to the abject poverty of people sleeping on the pavements, railway platforms and slum in the major cities.
It is not for the faint hearted, however. It is an eight thousand km, 18 hrs journey, to get to the capital Delhi via Dubai. We also travelled over 4,000 kms within India between the different cities we visited and walked around 120 kms on foot.
The tour had seven flights, including getting there and back, six train journeys, including the famous ‘Toy Train’ down from Shimla, two by coach, two in a fleet of nine cars up to and partly down from Shimla and a boat trip at night on the Ganges in Varanasi. Most of these except the latter being 6 to 8 hours long
We were extremely fortunate however to have our guide Amit Sharma, who was absolutely amazing and managed to keep us all safe throughout the whole 17 days of the main tour. The group consisted of 36 of us, mostly in or past our sixties, including eight singles. His knowledge of the country and its history was truly encyclopaedic.
In addition to the main journeys around the country mentioned above, he somehow managed to get us through the organised chaos which is India. This included 18 rickshaws on day one around Delhi, two rides on 9 tuc tucs, including one to the Golden Temple, a nine-car convoy up to Shimla and a jeep ride to the Red Fort. Almost every form of transport in India except the myriad of motorcycles in the main towns and the Delhi Metro. This also included coach trips every day to and from the main sights and porters wherever necessary to get our luggage on and off the trains and coaches. He really was remarkable.
The sights themselves are fabulous, from the iconic Taj Mahal and Golden Temple to the Red Fort in Delhi, the burning funeral pyres in Varanasi, the Pink City of Jaipur with its incredible Jantar Mantar an ancient but still functional astronomical observatory.
Shimla in the foothills of the Himalayas has the old residence of the Viceroy, where in the 1800’s a third of the world population at the time was governed from.
In Amritsar the Golden Temple, the holiest site of the Sikh religion, is spectacular at night in the midst of its pool and by day and night provides over 200,00 people daily with free food irrespective of their colour, creed or gender.
Also, all the hotels were four- or five-star full board and the whole holiday seemed to be extraordinarily good value for money at about £2,600 each, including all of the above, with only another £700 between us spent on trips, shopping and tips.
The food was excellent, although mainly vegetable and spicy and we were provided with packed lunches every time we had an early start.
Our only criticism of the accommodation was that the Park Hotel in Delhi, where we stayed four times, often seemed to have other functions on (weddings and parties), which effected our ability to use the full facilities, like the pool.
Although this was not a specific wildlife tour, as keen naturalists we did manage to record 72 species of birds, one reptile (crocodile) and 11 mammals including seeing a tiger and sloth bear on the extension tour to the Ranthambore National Park. Despite being delighted to see these it’s a long way to go, (5hrs by train each way) for one day (two safaris) into the park. In fact, we were very lucky to see both the tiger and the bear as there is only about a 20% chance of doing so.
As a hopefully constructive comment, it would have been better to spend an additional day in Ranthambore rather than a day at rest in Delhi, where we had already been three times before. Giving a better chance of seeing the wildlife and making the journey there and back less of a rush.
Overall it was a fantastic experience to witness how such a huge country with nearly one billion people still manage to operate in a state of organised chaos.
Understanding all the different religions and history was fascinating and made it something we will not forget or be able to digest for a long time.
