We took the wet market tour which was fun and interesting. Echo identified a number of interesting fruits and meats. She helped me buy great northern Chinese rice (so many varieties to pick from!). Back at a private residence we made dumplings. By the end we were all making pretty well shaped dumplings that tasted great. Helen and her team made us comfortable and were great instructors. Highly recommended. Thank you Helen and team!

We started with a quick tour in the wet market with Heather to buy some vegetables needed for the meals. Then we met Chef Jiang in a apartment so we can really feel we are cooking at (his) home! We chose 2 recipes and then Chef Jiang detailed the different steps so we can do everything by ourselves. He was very nice and attentive to help up and to explain is how to cook. Finally, the meals were really simple to prepare and to cook (once you buy all the ingredients) and the result was absolutely delicious!
I recommend this friendly team, we spent a great time and we had a delicious dinner :P

Elrick met me at the metro and took me shopping at the wet market. He was knowledgeable and a great talker. Jay was my chef and instructor when we got to the apartment. He is the son of a chef (so knows more than his unassuming personality lets on). Jay was fun and professional. I enjoyed learning about wok cooking and traditional seasonings and ingredients. I feel much more comfortable going to the wet market and cooking Shanghai food now because of these guys. This is a great way to spend an afternoon. I highly recommend this.

Helen our host was amazingly accommodating, we were running late but she waited. The wet market was perfect we spent over an hr there asking lots of questions and buying extra food.

The cooking was great and very hands on. Great atmosphere to learn the recipient that we had picked out. Solid English skills so was easy to understand.

Great company. Highly recommend!!

Both our guides were really chatty, friendly and funny. We had great fun making a mix of dumplings which tasted great! Very relaxed atmosphere and lots of useful info from the wet market visit as well!

Reading the last couple of reviews I thought I had gone to a different class. I guess you might give this class five stars if you've never been to a cooking class or to a market in Asia. I think the positive reviews focus on the social aspects of the class. If you have been to a cooking class before and have been to an Asian market this class might feel pretty average to you.

They cancelled our Monday class but offered us the Sunday class instead. We met at a metro stations and did a lackluster tour of a Chinese market. Our guide wasn’t particularly enthusiastic and didn’t really any kind of insight in to the ingredients or Chinese cooking. If we asked her what something was, she would tell us, but there wasn’t a lot of enthusiasm.

Back at the classroom we had tea and snacks for 20 minutes as chef and our guide/translator worked in the kitchen. I would have rather watched (and helped) but instead we were asked to sit and drink tea. Chef demonstrated and the guide translated so we might have missed a lot of subtlety of the instructions.

The recipes we made didn’t really follow the written recipes. This is not uncommon in cooking classes but, in this class, it was sometimes more divergent than usual. I don’t think I could make the recipes as printed at home without my handwritten notes. They said they would send the modified recipes we cooked afterwards but it took some prompting to get them.

This was great!! It started with Erica giving a list of ingredients to buy in the market-in Chinese. Fun to try our hand speaking with the locals and the market was an experience in itself. Then to the kitchen where we learned how to make Kung Pow Chicken, Pepper Beef and spring rolls. The instruction was hands on with an actual chef and we did it all, from chopping veggies to frying it up in a wok to, of course eating. And it was great. Erica was funny and made the whole event a real treat. If you have the chance, this is something you really should try- to learn how to cook Chinese and get a flavor of how
actual Chinese shop and eat. Definitely 5 star.

We had an absolute blast with this cooking class. Since it was only the two of us we got to do the cooking class in an apartment with a real chef who was a lot of fun.

Erica was our guide and was extremely patient with us as we were late due to Shanghai traffic. She was also very patient in our dumpling making as we both seemed to be very challenged in that area!

The wet market tour is a great experience for several reasons. One, you get to see a normal, every day, market that locals shop at every day. Such a wide variety of foods, smells and people, this a wonderful tour in itself. Secondly, Erica has you actually order the items needed for your class.... in Mandarin! This is another place where Erica was extremely patient, I know I struggled attempting to order.

As embarrassing as it was knowing that I was butchering the words, it was fun. Especially seeing the reactions and facial expressions of the vendors. Erica also talked us into trying salty eggs and Century eggs. These weren't quite enjoyable for us but as the saying goes "when in Rome, do as the Romans do".

Once we had all of our ingredients, we went to the apartment to cook our selected meals. The chef was as patient as he could be with us and Erica was meticulous in taking notes for the recipes.

Being able to immerse yourself in the local culture by taking such an intimate cooking class was an incredible experience and we highly recommend it for anyone looking for an adventure.

We did this class recently while in Shanghai. It was our first overseas cooking class and I must say that the bar has now been set.
Erica, our guide and translator took us shopping at the wet market. This immersive experience was heightened by Erica's delightful sense of humour and local knowledge.
The meals we cooked were chosen by us and we weren't disappointed. The end result was absolutely delicious. Our Chef was very patient and friendly with a lovely smiling face. He made the cooking session easy and broke things down so they were easy to follow and easy to remember.
I would highly recommend this cooking course to anyone who is looking for a local Shanghainese experience. Absolutely loved it!!!
