This was a 10/10, top class experience. I have been to 40 countries so far, and Jim’s personalized tour is honestly in the top 3 tours I have done anywhere! The food was amazing, Jim’s knowledge was impressive & I had such a great time.

My partner and I had a fantastic night with Lu who introduced us to local dishes and eateries. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and was very happy to answer any questions we had. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting shanghai!

Lu did an excellent job curating the tour for us. We anticipated to be a part of a group but we got lucky and it became a private tour. Overall, we had about more than 15 different types of dishes and food, including local beer and wine.
What made this tour so unique are; 1) Its later than usual so you missed the crowd and you'll see different types of crowd at night. 2) the walking route was very enlightening, interesting, and educational, 3) Lu was such a great guide that it really felt like we were friends hanging out, going out for restaurant hopping, chit chatting about everything without judgment, 4) you really feel immersed with the locals.
I must warn that some places could be a little too local for some that would not be suitable for the weaker stomach. But if you want to feel experience some true food tour "after hours", this tour is recommended.

This was a wonderful way to see the local area and try different foods that we never would of tried before, our guide Lu was amazing, so nice and so knowledgable and was fun and kind. If you come to Shanghai I can not recommend this trip enough.

I invited two business friends to the tour. We had beer from Xintiandi bar, sesame noodle, pomegranate juice, hotpot in a tea shop, liquor, some food skewers and mongo jello. We paid 89 per person. The tour was from 8.30 pm to 11.30 pm. In the end of three hours, we didn’t feel we spent three hours in Shanghai that is globally well known for its modern and sophistication, we felt we walked around in a small town and had low grade food in stead. The tour started ok from tasting noodle and beer, then, it went downwards. The little hot pot in the tea shop was very wired. One of my friends was worried if the hot pot was clean. The sweets in the end had wired look too. However, the two tour guides were very friendly and tried to explain what they know about the food and a history site. We all like the tour guides.
If I hadn’t been Shanghai for many times and tasted many wonderful food in Shanghai, this food tour would certainly misguide me. Two of my friends felt the same way.
If I hadn’t been to many food tours all over the world, I would give the tour three stars, but I know the food selection in this tour is below average in all tours I had. I am sorry I have to give my honest opinion even though the two tour guides are very nice. I really hope the tour company read my review and improve the food selection. It’s Shanghai, come on!!!!
If I hadn’t been Shanghai for many times and tasted many wonderful food in Shanghai, this food tour would certainly misguide me. Two of my friends felt the same way.

Thank you for choosing this food tour. We appreciate it a lot for sharing your honest thought.
I'm sorry that you didn't like those choices we specificly pick for our guests. But we will keep our opinions for all the selection in this winter season. All the vendors we connect are the best group of locals that work hard for the food quality and service we believe best represent Shanghai.
Yes, this is a city known for fantastic skyline, rooftop bars, highend restaurants and exotic live music in the late night. But I'm sorry that we don't focus much on that part. It's the locals, the people, the lifestyle here that make this city different from New York or San Francisco.
For frequent business travelers with enough budget, I'll more suggest to book a great dinning spot on the Bund area such as Lost Heaven, M on the Bund, Canton Disco or Dingtaifeng.
Thank you for choosing this experience. In the past three year, we've only met once that guests had stomach problem after the tour when they've already drunk tap water for a whole week(we don't do that in China). If your friends did have an issue, please reach us again(jim@foodieshanghai.com) and we'll fully refund you.

This tour is amazing! We had so much great food! Our guide Lu was wonderful! His English was great and he was very knowledgeable. Every stop we had was fantastic - all the food was amazing. We had shanghai pancakes, some INCREDIBLE noodles at a Michelin recommended place, hotpot with a tea master in her tea shop, a beer tasting stop, some dessert, and a stop for “irregular” food :) even though it was raining and a bit challenging to walk around, it was so very worth it! We highly recommend this tour :)

This was an excellent way to try different foods around Shanghai. Our group of 5 joined with 3 others and we all had a great time. Our guide and his American assistant were very knowledgeable and friendly. The only reason for 4 stars is how the tour ended—more assistance with getting a taxi would have been appreciated. It was too late for the metro and we were at the mercy of late night taxi drivers who charged about 3 times the normal rate.

Dear Brian,
I'm very sorry to hear that you were ripped off by the taxi driver. Friday night is usually busy to wave a taxi.
Shanghai metro system runs until 1am from Friday and Saturday. Most popular lines such as line 1, 2, 10 (all close to the area we walked by) are still running by the end we finished. But your hotel is on line 13, which is a little far from the former French Concession area.
I'll highly recommend you to download the DiDi app, the chinese equivalent of Uber, next time when you're here. They have english menu and start to accept foreign credit card recently.
Unfortunately, taxi drivers are really bad in Shanghai. We apologize for that.
We did try to get you a taxi, but failed. So we bring you to the proper place that people are waiting for taxis, where there is actually a police station close by. This was our mistake and problem of trusting drivers.
I would like to thank you again for being open-minded to blend in this tour. Hope you still like Shanghai apart from a few flaw.

Really enjoyed this tour! My fiance and I went on this with our guide, Ming and one other guest. Loved being in a small group, meaning we got more time to talk with our guide. Ming was great - he knew the city and culture well, very personable and clearly excited to be there with us!
Yes, the price of this tour may seem expensive, but we actually got a lot of food - we were happily full at the end - and what you're really getting out of this is the experience. We've been on plenty of food tours before and this one is something special. It felt like being led around by a friend, not a company. My fiance and I actually had walked the neighborhood before the tour, but Ming took us to places we wouldn't have found ourselves. He pointed out places of interesting, told fun facts, and educated us on the history and culture of the city, aside from just the food.
My favorite stop on the tour was the tea shop! Such a unique experience, enjoying tea in a small intimate place, having home cooked bites and sips of Chinese liquor.
Yes, it is a late night tour so be prepared for that. Metro stops running around 10:30PM and we went past that. Ming was very helpful in helping to call cabs. But for us, we wanted to head to the bars so Ming actually walked us back to the spot we started.

My husband and I really enjoyed the variety of food/beverages/tea on this tour! Our guide Jim helped call us get a ride back to the hotel when we were finished. It was perfect and the later time slot that we met allowed us time to enjoy the city of Shanghai without being rushed!

I booked today's event, however I cancelled a couple hours later. The cancellation email states no refunds. Will I still be able to attend since I did not get my refund?

My guess is that it will be fine if you show up but better to email Lu and let him know that you are coming. I have his direct email but the website algorithm is so good it would not let me post any variation of it.

No fish at all and just few sea food. You will have other options when sea food comes.

Would love to take this tour but I have celiac and can’t eat gluten so eating in China is always a challenge , are there any gluten free options in this tour that I can have while my friends enjoy gluten galore ?

Doubt it. The language problem is severe!! Stick to meat and fish only. Don’t trust in the ability of your guide to be able to ensure it is gluten free. Remember soya sauce is not necessarily gluten free

No, but you meet him at the French Concession. Taking a taxi is very safe and inexpensive. Your hotel can get you a taxi and tell the driver where to take you. Shanghai is very safe. We were two women and felt very comfortable walking all around. We were never hassled and most people were happy to help us if we got lost.
