Our family of four beginner surfers (parents and teens) just returned from Playa Grande where we had three super fun lessons with Jost. He is an excellent teacher who explained the fundamentals really well. We all felt very safe and learned a lot! We much preferred being out with an instructor instead of trying to figure it out on our own. I also really appreciated the good communication during the booking process and how organized things were once we arrived. Thank you!!

My wife and I booked a semi-private surf lesson with a specific instructor. She had taken lessons from him last year and really liked him. She ended up having to drop out so I got a 90 minute private lesson. It was a disappointing experience, particularly compared to the experience I saw others having with a different instructor.
--Students with the other instructors were given rash guards. Our instructor forgot to bring any for us.
--The waves were very big the day of our lesson. I watched the other instructor help their students get the boards out each time through the rough surf. My instructor left it all to me, which meant I quickly became exhausted just getting the board out to where we were starting each time. When he was holding the board, if a big wave came he would just let go so that he could duck under it, leaving me to deal with the board and the wave.
--I had taken a surf lesson several years ago and was told to stand with my left foot forward (I am right-footed). This instructor insisted I should have my right foot forward even when I shared my prior experience. I struggled for the first half of the lesson before switching on my own (and doing much better).

The team at Frijoles Locos is always excellent. From ease of booking online through every interaction in and out of the shop, this team of people make an excellent experience. This year my husband and I joined our kids (6 and 8 years) in surfing lessons and Jost was able to manage all of us safely and professionally. We rented boards for the first time and even this is made convenient as they dropped off and picked up our boards when we were done. So easy! The service inside the shop is also always friendly and welcoming. It is just such a nice experience all around here and the reason we never consider looking elsewhere. A special thank you to Jost again for really being patient and encouraging to all of us—you are so good at what you do! Until next year.

It can be a hustle for us to deliver equipment and we do have a somewhat limited range but we are happy to do deliveries whenever possible. All our in shop and surf lesson crew take pride in doing an excellent job and I couldn't be prouder that you noticed everyone's hard work. We look forward to having you back any time!

Board delivered to the hotel , surf lesson was excellent . After surf lesson it was decided I needed a different board. They switched them out for me. Shop has just about anything you need .

We had a great time surfing with Andy. We had basically a private family lesson at Playa Grande. He went over all the basic steps to surfing and worked with us individually. He went further out in the surf with my oldest son who wanted an extra challenge at the end. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is the staff when we first entered weren't the friendliest and made us feel a tad uncomfortable about surf lessons. Andy was very cool though.

I'm curious as to how our staff made you feel uncomfortable about surf lessons - We do a LOT of lessons and our crew is accustomed to speaking with clients ahead of scheduling. Perhaps a language barrier? At any rate we do hope to have you back again soon!

We have never had a surf lesson before, but Brian was a friendly and patient teacher and good communicator. We had our lesson on the first day of our vacation and spent the rest of the week practicing on rented boards. The instruction was excellent and they brought the boards to our home. We also scheduled other activities through Jules and their concierge service. The recommendations were excellent and exactly what we wanted in a family vacation in beautiful Costa Rica!

My friend and I had an amazing experience learning at Grande. The beach was absolutely perfect for beginners and Jost was a wonderful instructor. We were up more than we were down. A pleasant surprise to say the least and I can’t wait to surf again! You MUST take lessons from Locos while you are in CR!

Great lesson with Justin. I was renting a board for a week, he suggested I switch to a different board. He brought the one I had back and switched it for me. Excellent instructor.

Both me and my wife are beginners surfers. Not only that but she is also a new swimmer and afraid of high waves. None of these were a problem though under Andy, the instructor, and the fun we had for 1,5h!! He explained the theory very well and in detail, he made us feel safe and guess what...10min into the water we were both catching waves! By the end of it my wife did not even remember that she was afraid :) well done to Andy and the team for the whole set up. Highly recommend it, either you are experienced or not!!
