The guys with Jaco Surf School are nothing short of amazing!! Jesus was so kind, patient, and helpful with our nervous 11 year old. He had her up and confidently surfing in no time! Francisco could be a life coach - he motivated my husband and I to stay with it even when frustrated and taught us how to keep our family safe while on this and other adventures. Our 13 year olds had a ball, they said they would like to do it every day now! Beyond having a great time and being able to surf, they were hospitable with parking, securing our valuables, and even trading pics. Highly recommend!

Javier provided a terrific experience. I have long boarding experience on small waves, and my wife has no experience. Javier was able to get my wife surfing within 2 waves, and he provided me with additional pointers to get me onto bigger waves. We LOVED the experience!

My wife, 8 year old son and I had a great time. The instructors were awesome and we were all surfing within the first 10 minutes in the water!! Shout out to Francisco and Javier (Rasta) for a great experience!!

I’d give a bonus star if it was an option. So fun for everyone. We all got up surfing. Instructors were amazing and helpful. 12 and 10 year old kids.

Excellent surf teachers but above all excellent people. They give you the bases and sharp your skills. They also make you feel safe and confident in the water.

We never received an appointment time after booking, and after calling the Jaco Surf School were told that they had no record of our booking, and that this listing was a scam posting, not the real one. Luckily we were able to get a refund through tripadvisor.

Hi, please note we do NOT specify a time at the time of booking as the tides change daily. The exact time is confirmed prior to the lesson, giving our customes ample time to prepare.
Pertaining the refund, the approval is made by Jaco Surf School, thus we were the ones who returned the funds to you, not tripadvisor.
Moving forward, we dont appreciate being called fradulent, as we returned your funds and we have been in business since 1989, making Jaco Surf School the first school in Jaco. In addition we also communicated via tripadvisor.

HIGHLY recommend this lesson!! Javier was AWESOME, such a cool dude!! I have never surfed before and was nervous about trying it out, but javier is very helpful and very knowledgeable. I left the lesson feeling way more confident and ready to surf again. Thank you again pura vida 🤙

I see several good reviews on this tour but be careful if you book a tour with them.
I booked/confirmed (through email and a phone call) and paid for a lesson for three adult kids for 11am on 4/7/2023. We followed the directions to Jaco beach, arrived at 10:30 am, found the sign for Jaco Surf School, found the tent and a young man who identified himself as being with JSS (and there was a Trip Advisor sign in front of the tent). He told us that the lesson would take place at noon due to the tide and after prompting, he agreed to set up three chairs and an umbrella (which are included in the lesson cost). The chairs were filthy and in disrepair and the umbrella was torn and in terrible shape. About an hour later he approached my son and asked them to agree to a lesson with a different company (Surf Factory) which was declined. At noon, still no-one there to provide a lesson, he indicated that his brother was "on the way." After another 20 minutes, we indicated that we were going to cancel the lesson - he whistled over to two men who had been standing on the street for some time and said they would give the lesson. It did not appear that these men could speak much English (although we booked the lesson in English) and they didn't look to be prepared to conduct a surf lesson so we declined and left. During the two hours we were there on the beach waiting for the lesson, no-one else associated with JSS appeared or identified themselves or looked for anyone waiting for a lesson.
I immediately contacted my cc company and disputed the charge and reached out to Viator/Trip Advisor to let them know what had happened. I later got a message from JSS asking why we cancelled the lesson - I sent photos of the tent, the chair/umbrella set up and the JSS sign and a narrative as to what happened. I got no response from JSS.
I would be very careful booking this tour - make sure your cc company has your back.

Dear Sally, If you noticed on our chat on the site and other methods we have always been in contact on the time we would host the lesson, that is why we state a specific time for the lesson as the tides change daily and it’s for your safety that we don’t do the lesson on low tide as you can hurt yourself.
In addition the money was also refunded at 100 percent after you left despite asking you to stay for the lesson time at a higher tide.

Spring Break '23. We booked through Tripadvisor- it was easy and the time was confirmed shortly thereafter. We have a six and eight year old so I wasn't sure how this would go. The dry land training took no more than 10 minutes and we were all off in the water. The beach itself is unimpressive but the surf, the lesson and the instructors were amazing! My kids said it was their favorite part of the trip. Our two instructors in the water (3/28 in the morning) were awesome with all of us! Muchas gracias!

My son was able to get up on the first or second try. Instructor was very helpful and fun. Jaco is definintely the place to learn if you want to try surfing!
