Did this August 2022 but forgot to post a review. The date selection will not permit selecting Aug 2022. This was wonderful with a local who knows and shared a lot of history. Saw a number of whales and the boat captain has communication with other boats in the water to make sure you go to where the whales are. Highly recommend.

Incredible trip with Hoonah Advenutures. We got off the cruise ship at Hoonah and took a short walk to the area where we were to meet the Hoonah rep. She was very easy to find. She loaded us up into the small bus which took us to the marina where we met Captain Billy. He took us to his fishing boat. As soon as we got out to the Bay, the whales were feeding everywhere! What a treat! Billy also took us to the beach to see a bear foraging amongst the rocks and got us close to the sealions in the area. We would highly recommend using Hoonah Adventures. They take great care to make sure you have the experience of a lifetime. Stacey and Rick from Ottawa Canada

This tour was the highlight of our Alaska cruise. The captain explained everything we were about to see and delivered what he said. Got us up close and personal with the whales without disturbing them. Created many phot ops. Was our best whale watching tour ever.

We loved our guide, Paul. He had tons of interesting facts and we were able to chase 5-6 whales for awhile around the Port Frederick area! We also were able to see a bunch of seals and sea birds. It rained the entire time while we were there but the inside of the cabin was warm, we had to keep squeegeeing the windows for better visibility.

Icy Strait Point was by far the best place for whale watching that we saw either on our trip to Alaska in September 2023, or even compared to our trip to Hawaii in March 2022.
Hoonah Travel Adventures provided an excellent experience. We only had to ride out in the boat about 20 minutes or so before we were quite literally surrounded by whales. There were a few other tour boats in the area as well so that tells us that we were in a the right area.
The Captain was very knowledgeable, and credibly so, about many different subjects including, of course, whale watching. His two person crew were very helpful as well. The 40’ or so boat provided both covered seating and places to go in the open, both at the front and the back. I never felt like I was prevented from getting good pictures by the other passengers on the boat.
I have included a picture that contains a collage of four of my best pictures that I took while on the boat. There was opportunity to get some even better ones but I was not as skilled as I would have liked at being prepared to get some of the shots. In a few instances, I should have listened closer to the crew because they often called out just before when they knew, from experience, that a tail would be showing on a dive or that something else would occur.
I cannot recommend both the Icy Strait Point location, and Hoonah Travel Adventures strongly enough. It was a thoroughly wonderful experience.

Fun whale watching excursion in Hoonah. Great shuttle from Icy Strait to Hoonah. We met Captain Denise and Johnathan for our journey. Great sightings of orcas and right whales.

Captain Billy took us out on a placid , calm sea is the sunshine . He told us all the stuff we needed to know , but he also took us straight to where the Whales were feeding . We saw an amazing amount of wildlife in addition, porpoise, sea lions, sea otters .....don't forget to ask him the name of the ducks ! It was the best tour of my entire holiday.

We had an amazing time with Captain Bill. We saw whales, otters, porpoises, sea lions and eagles. We had a small group and the Captain found a way to ensure we were in a quiet space away from other boats The dream were friendly, knowledgeable and really helpful. I highly recommend this experience. A real highlight.

My husband walks with a cane. Is it far to walk from ship to excursion point? Is it easy to board the excursion boat (ramp)? Thanks.

The pick up point is just behind the adventure center and restaurant near the end of the pier. it was maybe 5 min walk, including the pier. There are golf cart shuttles on the pier itself. Boarding the ship was very easy, and the guides/deck hands are very helpful if needs be.

The boat I went on held 18 people. Their other newer boat looks smaller. Way better than the cruise line sponsored tour boat that had 100+

Are you able to go out on a deck for picture/video taking?
Yes. You are able to take pictures/video from both front and back of the boat.
