Guide provided a well informed tour of the essential sites concerning Apartheid in Johannesburg. A visit to the voortrekker monument with explanation of the Great Trek was also included. Guide answered all questions I had. Included lunch was a highlight:

For someone who has travelled to 100 countries and has what to compare, I can say this was one of the best museums I ever visited. Wish I had had the time to read every exhibit in its entirety.

Loved all the great information and sights but I did on my own and at times have to search around for the guide. Good lunch and he was very informative. Misread that it would also include some of Joburg, it does not include anything.

''What people do not expect to see or hear about when visiting Pretoria's Church Square, the Voortrekker Monument and the Zonderwater Prisoners of War Museum, is the interesting Italian connection to all three. Starting with the Voortrekker Monument, many visitors and tourists do not realize on seeing 'Base Relief no.15'', that it is the Italian heroin of the Battle of Bloukrans (16/17.2.1838) namely Teresa Viglione, who saddled a horse (as you see there) realizing that the Voortrekker Lager at Bloukrans was being attacked, and rode down the Bushmens River, warning others along the way of the imminent danger of Dingaan's Zulu Impi approaching them. From the Voortrekker Lager of Carel Maritz, she sped onto Doornkop, arriving back to with reinforcements, and treating the injured Voortrekker children with Salph and Basalm that she had brought along with her from the Cape. She was highly praised for her brave efforts, along with her two male trading companions, who like herself were from Piedmont, North West Italy. The Voortrekkers with the opening of the Voortrekker Monument did not forget her, dedicating a base relief to her.
The foundations of the Voortrekker Monument were laid by an Italian builder and businessman from Osoppo, near Udine, northern Italy, who had arrived in South Africa in 1926, and had settled in Johannesburg. Lupini , another Italian from Piedmont, was responsible for the Voortrekker Wagon engravings. The small statues on the inside walls of the monument deplicting in small statue form was made by Professor Romano Romanelli and his team. Chipped out and made from Carrara marbel, like the bronze statues at the monument, plus the statue of President Paul Kruger, and the Voortrekker figures below him at Church Square. All made and casted in Rome, and shipped out to South Africa. The Romanelli family are still in business to-day in Florence, Italy and are internationally well known.
Another important museum in Pretoria is the Zonderwater Italian Prisoner of War Museum, which is a member of the ''International Museum Association'', where one can see and hear much of the Italian creations and works of these prisoners(some 96,000 of them) who contributed greatly to South Africa. Dr Emilio Coccia is the creator of this museum, and will enlighten visitors on their arrival at the museum. The first Sunday of November is dedicated to these prisoners of war every year, and anyone who wishes to attend the ceremony is most welcome.
