This walking tour was highly recommended for my mom, sister, and I first visit to South Africa. Our tour guide, Mawazi was amazing! Incredibly knowledgeable about Soweto and South Africa’s rich history. There were 5 people on the tour so he explained every historical significance thoroughly. He was friendly, personable, and respectful. The 3 hours went by quickly. We felt safe throughout the tour plus Mawazi slowed down to accommodate my 78 year old mom. The lunch was delicious! This tour was worth every cent.

Thank you Maweza for such lovely tour of Soweto. I left South Africa with a greater understanding of its history. There was also a hidden gem that we went to that we didn’t meet most tour companies at. I’d definitely recommend taking a walk with Maweza#Kenyangirl

This was a wonderful tour of Soweto. We got to see the very historical parts, but also areas that we would've never ventured into on our own. Our guide was also incredibly knowledgeable and kind. Would highly recommend!

So we did an amazing tour with Maweza. He is a very very good story teller and he an expertise about South Africa, Soweto and apartheid history. He took us to a local restaurant and we had a good lunch. 👌

Great communication, they could fulfill all our special wished including transport. It was a wonderful tour with our "history professor" Maweza. It was great to get insights into the history and the everyday life.

This was such a joyful experience and one of the most important activities in our trip to Johannesburg. The whole tour felt safe, educational and lively. I would 1000% advise this local tour over any large-scale company. Go with the locals! You get the real deal experience and the true South African pride and joy that comes with it!

Maweza was fantastic. He's a passionate historian, clear in his explanations and warm in his interactions.
The poverty tourism aspect of walking through the slum area I found uncomfortable, but it's done with a resident who explained the benefits for the community (thanks Laurence).

I enjoyed the four-hour Soweto walking tour with Themba. It felt like walking with a friend, especially since I was the only one on the tour that day. The tour starts at the Hector Pieterson Museum and then goes through Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, both Nobel laureates, once lived. It continues into Orlando East, with a minibus-taxi ride included, and ends at Soweto Towers. You can choose to go to a township or the Bara Mall. Themba mentioned that the bicycle tour covers more ground, but I was happy to walk since it was a more personalized and intimate experience. I had a Kota sandwich, and as I write this review, I'm enjoying the chewing gum with fact nuggets that Themba gave me. The starting point at Vilakazi Café is good too, with good coffee and knick-knacks to buy. I also visited a township, guided by a resident, and felt safe and well-taken care of throughout. It was a great tour and a memorable day.
One tip is to contact the operator before the day of the tour and also the morning before you leave so that the guide appears on time and you're certain the tour is happening.

from the JNB airport and what is the best way to get to the starting point from the airport? How far is it to get back to the airport after the tour?

We took an Uber directly from the airport and back (super-affordable, at least compared to US prices). We allotted an hour each way, to be safe. Lots of shops and a great coffee spot right by the museum/memorial.
