Fisher IslandPort of Miami

Beautiful mangrove bay for kayaking, and there were a few iguanas in the mangrove trees. However, no manatees (it was already a bit too late in the season, they admitted) and the group was too big.

Late season viewing is less. Their range varies each year depending on weather and temperatures. The last few weeks had fewer sightings and then they came back after we wrapped up the season for tours. For most viewing possibilities we recommend midweek groups. Fewer people around and less boat traffic in the general area. Both pluses. We also dont want to stress the animals.
Glad you enjoyed the tour. Hooefully you can come back. We do offer a free rentalnfor tours that dont see manatees. Email us from your reservation and we'll set you up for next season.

Weather was not good to see the manatees so we changed the trip to regular self guided kayaking as recommended by the staff. I am still waiting for a response as I was told I would get a partial refund.

We had a blast on the kayak tour. Sergio and Ally were our guides and they were amazing. Very knowledgeable and made the tour fun. They took us around the lake and out to a little beach. We got to see a few manatees, iguanas, lots of fish, and birds. All in all a great part of me and my friends spring break trip. I would definitely come back and do another tour.

We had two main issues during our guided manatee tour with VKOC.
1. The tour started 30 minutes late. We had planned for 2-4 pm as advertised on their website and booking platform. We ended up having to cut our time on the water short by 30 minutes to make it to our next event. We lost a quarter of our time ($42.50 before taxes and fees). When you delay starting a tour to accommodate late arrivals, you do a disservice to the people who showed up on time.
2. Guides were difficult to hear and did not appear focused on guiding. We were in a large group (40 people?) with 2 guides. One guide spoke at a time and you had to jostle your way close to them in order to hear. They did not attempt to project their voices or use a microphone. After a while we gave up on hearing them. One guide broke away from the group and we followed her thinking she had seen something interesting. She turned to us and said she was just looking for someone’s phone. I don’t understand why we would pay a premium for a guide vs. a rental alone if she was more focused on looking for a phone than on guiding the group.
This section below is not part of the rating but rather an overview of our experience:
We did not see any manatees. The tour was at low tide and high wind, meaning that we could not go out into the bay where it was deeper and it was unlikely that manatees could come into the lagoon given how shallow it was. I would also not be surprised that we did not see any given how large our group was and the noise we made splashing around in the lagoon. If I were to go again, I would rent a kayak and go during high tide/low winds. Try to go on an ‘off’ time when there aren’t so many people packed into a small lagoon.

I'm sorry you were disappointed. This is our most sought after tour. It didn't become that by offering bad service. However, you are describing a pretty bad day. There is no good reason for a half hour late start. I have reached out to our guides about this. When outside influences cause arrival delays we will delay the start for those stuck in traffic. In the case of Sunday, a serious backup on the road. However, this is partly why we have two guides and one should have started the tour while the other waited and later joined.
We did not have 40 participants. We had 21 paid guests (8 double kayaks, 5 single kayaks). Perhaps rental customers appeared to be part of the tour, or some folks tagged along. That also should have been addressed by your guides that day.
This is part of spring break season. Although we do not generally get spring break business, Miami has been overrun by visitors seeking our climate and amenities. It seems more people than ever made Miami and our spot their destination. Combine that with a windy March day and you get a lot more people in the lagoon than usual. Nonetheless, packed is a bit of a stretch. We were not as busy as a usually Sunday.
The lagoon has a deep channel that can accomodate boats with up to 8ft draft (deep). The animals could easily move in and out at will. There was nothing keeping them in or out. Wind does not affect them underwater.
It is March. Our manatee tours end in another couple of weeks and the season at the end of April. We never guarantee you will see one. We cannot, manatees move about freely. That being said we've had a bunch this week despite being extremely busy and still windy. That is not a consolation, just the reality of wild animals in their habitat. It will get more difficult to see one as we head into April. There will be fewer in the area and for a shorter time period. They are here year-round.
Rentals are available seven days a week. We never discourage that and actually even steer some folks in that direction.
You did point out issues that need attention and I will personally address them. You are encouraged to reach out to us at info@vkoc.net
On tours that had no manatees in the area we offer a free rental for our guests. If you are in the area you are welcome to return.

Fun day seeing manatees, iguanas and birds. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I appreciated them taking the time helping my 80 year old mom in and out of the kayak. I highly recommend this tour.

Sergio and Bailey were super friendly and they really did their best to make the experience positive. They were focussed on safety and customer experience. The equipment are in good conditions. They worked hard to keep the tour in good and positive energy. The negative is that the tour is really large (about ~20 people). You could save some money by just renting the equipment without following the tour.
There were a good number of manatees, but the water clarity isn't super good.

I'm glad you had a good tour. We try to cap at 15 crafts with two guides included (also includes double kayaks). You grouovhad a few extra due to extenuating circumstances. We teied to accomodate some folks with flught issues. We are in an estuary. The water is sometimes clear, sometimes a bit murky. You should see it after a hurricane, milky for day. Which interestingly also helps purge materials from the lagoon. But I digress. Clarity depends on weather and tide. Sometimes its super clear. Others, not so much. That doesn't affect the manatees in the area. Yes, rentals are always an option for the budget minded traveler. We'll even give you viewing tips. The tour is interprative. If you read reviews youll see the bulk of the negative is the few times we didnt see any manatees and people felt cheated. I mean, geez, they are wild animals. Not some manatee scam. Although seldom, it happens. Anyways, sorry for the long response. I guess the caffeine kicked in :)
Thank you so much for spending your time with us. I hope we managed to create some great memories for you. Do come back for a rental or try the miuntain bike trails. Great adventures await on Virginia Key.

Highly recommend this eco-friendly outdoor activity in Miami. The outdoor center staff and tour guides were all friendly and efficient despite 1/2 my party arriving late. Our tour was scheduled on an unusually overcast day so the tour guides advised us that we might not see a manatee and offered an extremely generous reschedule option if we wanted to postpone or proceed and try to see the wildlife. Thankfully, within minutes of beginning the tour we found ourselves next to two manatees, and during the extra time at the end of the tour had a chance to look beside them for an extra 30 minutes and soak in the experience. The rest of the tour was also fascinating, with detailed Descriptions of the bird life, mangrove forest, and local civil rights history (visit to the first integrated beach open to minorities in Miami).
Negative reviewers here have perhaps never been on a wildlife safari, where an Animal sighting can never be guaranteed for obvious reasons. Given the standard cost of renting a kayak or paddleboard, the additional cost for a naturalist-led tour guide here is minimal and definitely worth it!

I understand they are endangered animals, and they can't trap them in the lagoon (lol), but if we paid the full price to see manatees and don't get to see them at all its quite disappointing for the price. $80pp for just seeing birds and paddling in a small area is a bit steep. This being said, the tour guides were awesome.

The tour was disorganized and disappointing. We saw no manatees (which is highly touted and the forefront of their advertisement) and tour guides really offered very little instruction, information or direction. Our husbands helped several people out of the kayaks at the end of the tour as the two guides were nowhere to be found. It was an expensive tour for what was provided, which was minimal. Just rent a kayak without the tour and you will get the exact same experience.

I am sorry you were disappointed. We always try our best to provide excellent experiences. I understand your disappointment when you see photos from recent tours and customers raving about manatees and what a great time they had and you feel cheated.
However, it is unfair to infer deception on our part. All of the photos are current and authentic. We had three tours with no manatees. Tours started in December. We do not guarantee a sighting. We cannot. These are wild herds that migrate freely.
We do a safety briefing before every paddle. I'm not sure what kind of instruction you feel was lacking.
Guests always have the option of renting on their own. You too had that option but voluntarily selected the tour. You weren't denied a rental or misled. It saddens me you feel so poorly. We truly care and try.
Your group split into two with some guests selecting a visit and the others decided to stay with Gino in the lagion to try see manatees. At some guests decided to leave, from what you wrote, following your lead. Your guides were still on the water. To say you weren't helped is very unfair.
When guests don't see manatees on a tour we extend the opportunity to our guests to return for a rental at no additional cost. I have a feeling you left before that happened. They are back. Not in the same numbers as before the cold front, yet, but they around again. If you are around and would like another opportunity to see them, on the house, let us know. We just need your reservation details. You can email us at info@vkoc.net
