We had the good fortune to choose a 5 day Artic husky sled adventure offered by Mali and Goran of Pirate Husky AS based in Borslev, Porsanger. "Good fortune" because Mali and Goran have thought through every aspect of the adventure from the initial airport pick-up through the whole Pirate Husky safari experience to final drop-off with a view to ensuring that we had a fun, safe, diverse, exciting and truly memorable adventure experience with their extended family of gorgeous Siberian huskies, and they achieved that in spades…
Our safari was over 5 days with the first and last night’s accommodation in a local apartment and 2 nights out in the field in a very comfortable Gamme tent.
Our safari lead was the athletic and engaging Johannes who was ably assisted by the wonderful Emilie. Johannes and Emilie drove the lead sled with Johannes from time-to-time shouting instructions to the lead huskies in Norwegian to keep us all on track. Johannes would teach us how to set up the sleds and the team of dogs, how to safely drive and manage the sleds and kept a watchful eye on how we were tracking when out on safari. If we became immovably stuck in a snow drift or had been spilled into the snow, one would quickly see the flash of Johannes’ red and black snow suit as he sprinted to help recover the situation and have us back mushing as quickly as possible.
Part of what made this safari so special was that Mali and Goran run the safari on highly personalized basis. Our safari included just 2 couples with each pair assigned a sled and given the opportunity to rotate between driver and passenger. Our hosts were also highly engaged, and would discuss the program, weather, etc. for each day and provide us with the opportunity for a say, but we were always happy to accept their plans. The Pirate Husky team freely shared their knowledge of huskies, sledding, local culture, the local area, history, adventure camping and various other stories so meal and other times made for some fun and interesting exchanges.
Each pair was assigned a team of seven or eight huskies for the duration of the safari, which gave us each the opportunity to get to know our team of huskies, both by name and personality. The involvement with the huskies is complete - we would assist in feeding them each meal, from breakfast through to their late night snack. These are beautiful and much loved huskies, when not in harness they love attention and a good head or belly scratch. However, when the first harnesses come out, it is all business… there is an almost deafening cacophony of excited barking and leaping at the prospect of being selected to join a sled team and run through the Norwegian forests. Their enthusiasm is such that, even after they have been pulling us through the snow for several hours and we stop to given them a snack, the chorus of barking quickly returns as they tell you they are once again ready to go once again and if you don’t listen, sometimes they will find a way to escape with just the sled, sans driver and passenger!!
Back in the big barn and kennels where the dogs live, you also have the opportunity to cuddle and play with the most gorgeous and mischievous husky puppies – they are so cute, but watch out as they will want to chew anything at ground level!
Goran and Mali have all the quality snow clothes you need – supplying us with properly fitted snow suits, snow boots, thick woolen & waterproof mittens and a beautiful pair of thick socks. All we needed to bring were our thermals, socks, neck warmers and perhaps your favourite ski goggles if you have some (…if you don’t, no need to worry). At no time did we ever feel cold – in fact, when driving it can be quite active, so you need to make sure you don’t over do the levels of insulation under the suit.
For our safari, the forecast weather conditions for the original camp location meant there was a fair risk we would be unable to leave that camp site for possibly 15 hours. At a "round table" meeting the idea of moving the Gamme to a more sheltered valley was floated and agreed by all. Goran then set about the significant task of moving the intended camp to the location that would give us the best experience and foundation for the safari. This also gave us the opportunity to learn how to set up the fabulous Norwegian Gamme that would be our “home” in the snow for a couple of nights.
Despite the change of plans, each day saw us extend our range of sledding further afield, initially 30+ kms in a day, then 40+ km and finally 50+ km. Each day also offered us new challenges as we learnt more about the beautiful huskies, developed our confidence on the sleds and how to work with team. On each day’s adventure, we would traverse picturesque snow covered Norwegian forests, frozen lakes, test the huskies (…and ourselves) on some challenging hills and in some deep snow drifts and learn how to manage the sled to ensure we could take a corner without spilling driver and passenger into a snow drift or clipping a tree.
The uphill sections sometimes meant the driver might need to occasionally help the huskies by helping push the sled until they fully regained their momentum. In these situations, the lead huskies would occasionally reinforce the “team” nature of the sled experience by casting glances back to the driver with a “look” that reminded you that you needed to do your bit too! While the hills can mean a bit more work, they often meant there was also likely going to be an opportunity for an exhilarating downhill run with eight hyperactive huskies looking to run at full gravity assisted speed through the twists and turns of the downhill track (….SOOO much fun!!).
Days were full as we would head out from the base camp and only reach the turn-a-round (and lunch point) at about 2:00-2:30pm. This meant that not only did we have the opportunity to take in some magnificent Norwegian vista’s by day and some radiant sunsets, but our immersion in the artic nature experience extended into another dimension as we sledded home through the forests under the cover of darkness in the arctic wilderness. All of this gives you the opportunity to truly feel connected to nature and the raw beauty of the environment you are sliding past – there are no sounds other than those of the huskies, the rails of the sled sliding through the snow, perhaps some gentle wind through the snow covered forest as you are completely immersed in the moment.
While much of our sledding was in sheltered areas of the forest, Goran and Johannes also gave us the opportunity to sample more challenging conditions by leading us to the top of one of the nearby peaks and an exposure to the adverse weather we had been trying to avoid from day one. Atop the windswept peak, our artic sledding experience was extended with driving snow, reduced visibility and such a strong wind it threatened to blow us sideways down the slope. While we would not have appreciated 3 days in such conditions, the 2 hours we had atop the peak added to our experience, saw us acquire new skills on the sled and gave us a small “taste” of the conditions early artic adventurers might have endured but with knowledge we were safely under the watchful eye of Goran on his Pirate Husky snow mobile.
For much of our sledding the snow mobile was nowhere to be seen or heard, but Goran might be travelling well in advance of the group as he used the snow mobile to flatten a path through some sections of virgin snow so as to ease the passage for the huskies and those on the sleds. He would often join us for lunch and also showed us how to ice fish.
For the 2 nights we were camping we enjoyed the relative comfort of a steel framed and lined Gamme tent with an army issue diesel stove (with flue). The tent was mounted on a timber platform with the added luxury of insulation matts. The diesel stove was so effective, you had to strip off your snow suit pretty much as you entered the tent to avoid overheating. Bedding was padded stretcher beds with -30 degree rated down sleeping bags. Goran ensured that the Gamme was so well anchored that on the second night the tent remained standing even when houses in one of the towns lost part of their roofs!! We were only aware of the storm courtesy of the shaking tent during the night and the occasional drop of some hanging clothing.
Each night in the tent Johannes or Goran would use a gas stove to heat up a delicious meal of deer stew or sauté smoked deer. After the days adventure, the hot meal and warm tent made for a wonderful setting in which to chat and share highlights of the day before settling down for the night in our cosy sleeping bags.
On the final night we returned to our apartment, enjoyed a hot shower, a change of clothes and were treated to a gourmet dining experience of local Norwegian fare. Mali and Goran had arranged a local chef to prepare several exquisite courses that comprised local produce, including fresh crab from the fjords, smoked local fish, soup, deer tenderloin and cloud berry panna cotta. A wonderful finale and meal and a great opportunity to reflect on the highlights of our adventures over the past few days with our hosts!
The final day gave us the opportunity to return to the kennels and say good bye to the gorgeous huskies and the puppies. Goran and Mali escorted us back to the Lakselv airport, but only after showing us around the town and community and giving us the opportunity to do some souvenir shopping.
Thank you Mali, Goran, Johannes and Emilie – you are extraordinary hosts and have really created quite a unique and special safari that has provided us with a truly memorable experience! It is one of the best things we have ever done and we hope to be able enjoy another adventure with you in the not too distant future. We could not recommend Pirate Husky and this safari more highly! It should be on everyone’s bucket list!
Best Wishes,
Andrew & Elizabeth B.

This was the most awesome holiday in such a beautiful part of the world in the company of truly caring people . We stayed at Borselv for 4 nights and were driven around by Goran to the kennels . The huskies are well trained, affectionate and so well looked after. We were wrapped up in excellent gear ;very good quality snow suits ;boots mittens and the lovely complimentary woollen socks . Needless to say that we didn’t feel the cold at all . The experience included hands on harnessing :feeding :unharnessing of the huskies along with a good tutorial on sledding from the first evening .
Mali and Goran were superb hosts and looked after us to the hilt . We enjoyed the locally sourced meats and the finale dinner presented most exquisitely . Johanas and Emily were our guides and everyday we sledded about 30+ km along the most beautiful forests and lakes ;enjoyed the steep slopes and bobsleds . Even our 11 year old became adept at controlling the sled along the slopes . At every moment we felt very safe ; well cared for and genuinely part of the community. We learnt a fair bit about the local Sami culture and enjoyed two night stay in the warmest of Gammes . Goran even made the extra effort of taking the kids on normal sleds one evening . The display of the Northern Lights was the Cherry on the cake for us .
We would love to go back and highly recommend it as a memorable experience to go for . Thank you so much Mali and Goran

Fabulous Day. We did the full day tour. Our friendly guides were Jonas and Ruth. We were given warm overalls and boots, gloves and ski goggles. We helped getting the dogs ready an into their harnesses. Then we set out. 7 dogs for each sleigh of 2 people, who take turns for steering/braking. We went along a woodland trail and then over the mountain. It was magnificent. There is a lunchbreak with a hot snack.
The dogs obviously love to run and are well cared for.
We would highly recommend. We will be back!

This should be your top experiences in Norway!!!!! Every aspect of the day was very special. Our hosts took lots of time telling us about the history of the dogs, how they were cared for and how a Husky Dog Team operates. We were then engaged with each of our teams to go get the dogs, put the harnesses on and attached the Huskies to their sled team - that was just the beginning. The sled ride itself was an unbelievable experience - breath-taking and absolutely beautiful!!!! I did not even notice the cold. Our hosts (who were amazing in every way) also served us outstanding food, stories and history of the Sami people. I am looking forward to returning to visit next fall or spring. I will definitely be back again for this outstanding experience!!!!!

I loved every part of this experience from their history to preparing the dogs to the actual sledding itself. You get a lesson in how to harness and then hook up the dogs and then you get to actually do it yourself (under their supervision). Interacting with the dogs was so special. You will see how much they LOVE pulling the sleds. They live to run with their pack and they are so eager to go! It was fun to see how excited and loud the dogs got when the first harness was brought out. You can tell they know and love each dog. This was my 4th time in Norway but only my first dog sledding. I didn't know you could do that but this is a MUST DO. I promise it will be worth the effort to get there!
