I was in Chicago for a few weeks, and made the excellent decision to join the Chicago Architect Center as a member for a year. This gives you access to all the walking tours (either for free or $10) as well as to the Center's exhibition, and I did as many of the tours as I could during my stay in the city. You can cover the cost of the annual membership by doing as few as 3 or 4 tours.
All of the guides / docents are knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly and you learn a lot about history as well as about the buildings themselves. Thanks a lot to the docents I met: Burt, Steve, Ed, Lisa, Bill, Brent, Joann, Mitch, Darcy, Jill, Tony, Joan, Rick Jessica.

A big yes to arch center walking and boat tours. Epic fail for the $14 arch center admission. Besides the epic model of chicago, there is nothing worth seeing. The other exhibits are pretty juvenile. Really basic info. A shame with the amazing history of architecture in chicago that the center is so lightweight.

An interesting building with a good interactive model of the downtown area. However there is not much else to see apart from a few boards about climate change. We thought it was a lot of money for one basic exhibit.

I recommend the Old Chicago Post Office Tour. It is not on the list here but needs to be! It is well worth seeing this magnificent building and hearing the history whether you are an out of state tourist or local. Please add this tour to your list of choices! It is easy to get to on public transportation, near the Blue line Clinton station, Amtrak, #60 bus.

The new Chicago Architecture Center is a great 2-3 hour stop for anyone even with a general interest in buildings and architecture. The model of downtown is a fantastic primer on Chicago’s renowned buildings. There is also a good timeline of Chicago’s stylistic development. The upstairs has a fantastic collection showing the evolution of the skyscraper, including some of the new supertall towers now in construction. Fascinating engineering goes into these cities in the Sky!
