First of all, after reading reviews here and the history of this place, I want to point out that after the original owner and creator retired and sold the business, it was closed for a while and per Wikipedia, considered for demolition. However, the new owner decided to keep it going, and it's obvious that since it's 2019 reopening, quite a bit of work has been done to improve the attraction based on comparing what we saw vs the negative reviews here that were from an earlier time period.
Overall, this is an amazing display of trains and landscapes, all the vision of one man who obviously put an incredible amount of work into it. You start your self-guided tour in the gift shop and work your way up to the top and then back down. The landscapes are beautifully done, and it's fun to see different size (and gauge) trains running around the settings. My husband and I adore hunting out bridges, especially suspension bridges in real life, and all the bridges featured in the display were simply delightful. We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent in the display, and on a light crowd day, took our time going through to watch the trains and enjoy the scenery.
As for my comment about the need for a little more "tender, loving care"; while the attraction is in mostly good shape, there is still work to be done. There are buttons that little (and big) visitors can push to start certain actions in the display, and about half a dozen weren't working. We saw a good number of trains, running on the higher levels, but were a bit disappointed that more weren't operating on the beginning sequences. Quite a few "derailments" that were not deliberate were obvious. That said, we witnessed a staffer going into the display to fix a particular train, so they are keeping up with what is going on inside. A little more TLC and attention to detail here would improve things quite a bit.
Aside from the train layout; the doll/miniature display was a bit of a disappointment for me as a doll collector, but it's mainly porcelain collector dolls, mostly more modern ones from the last two/three decades and not really older antiques. They were kind of a mish-mash throughout the displays and the gift shop and some were not displayed in the best condition. They really could also use some TLC; however, there were a few really interesting older dolls that catch one's eye.
The gift shop has toys and other items but most importantly, a room devoted to train models/"tops" that can be put on wheels for your personal home train sets. The selection there is really diverse and something that would be appreciated by model railroaders. As for the outdoor train, it was not running considering we visited in the winter, and there was no sign of it outside. From other reviews, I'm not sure if they are still running it at all; that has to be determined with the current owners.
Overall, I think Northlandz is DEFINITELY worth a visit, especially if you are a model railroad fan or someone who just enjoys amazing historical and interactive attractions such as this one. My take is that it is continually being worked on by the new owners, and I hope they keep it up and take care of the minor problems within. We plan to come back again.

Don’t waste your money. The place was dusty and more than half of the interactive activities were broken. Not worth the $40 admission fee. I expected more and was very disappointed.

I found Northlandz on Google Maps as I live in NJ and my son is a big train fan. There are some train museums in NJ area but this one is definitely a recommendation for indoor. The trains here are so real and it is great fun for my family. Currently the Staff told me the trains are 30% running and will soon run to 100% after regular checks -- which I will definitely come again and see the amazing scene.

We took four boys 8,6,5 and 3. They all enjoyed themselves and had a great time looking at all the different scenes. A great family activity!!
