Amazing cooking time with Lutfia.
First ingredients in locals markets
Second time in the spice farm to discover a lot of fruits, spices..
Third time: cooling time with the so nice Lutfia. We cooked: banana vegetables and coconut milk, grilled fish, mixed vegetables and fresh coconut milk, pilao rice 😋

The tour starts at the market, where vegetables, rice, chicken and fish are purchased. It is fun if you haven't already been to the markets yourself.
Thereafter a 30-40 min drive follows to the village. We did not know that the tour also included a spice tour which to us was the highlight of the tour,
After that, the cooking started in an open hut with five firewood stoves. No chairs or tables. For the participants it was not exactly cooking but solely very, very basic tasks such as cutting potatoes, onions etc. while the tour guide mixed the vegetables/meat/spices in pots and pans. Therefore, do not expect this tour to be an actual cooking class - you do not learn to cook local food, but you see how they cook traditionally.
The result was quite disappointing ... lacking spices ironically, overcooked and not at all at the level you experience in Zanzibar.
Would not recommend.
By the way - we never recieved the recipies ...

Therefore, do not expect this tour to be an actual cooking class - you do not learn to cook local food, but you see how they prepare it themselves while helping with simple tasks. The cooking session took three(!) hours, not including the actual eating. The participants we were with kept the spirits high for the first two hours, however, during the last hour we - and the rest of the participants - started to feel restless and people lied on the floor.
Unfortunately, the food we got was the least tasty of all of the food we had during our two weeks in Zanzibar. The spices just didn't come through. We had especially hoped to learn how to make the very delicious curry that is served in most restaurants in Zanzibar but were disappointed.
We chose this cooking class because of the great reviews it has gotten. Maybe we were unlucky but the experience was very disappointing, especially considering the price. We have been to many cooking classes around the world, and this is the first cooking class where we did not learn to cook at all. In addition, the food was not even tasty.
We were back in Stonetown around 16.30.

This is a great way to practically view the plants that produce the prices and experience what part of the plants are harvested and how it is done. With the cooking lesson you start from basic spices and process then to add to the meat and vegetables.

Absolutely loved our Zanzibar Cooking Class & Spice Tour! What a fantastic way to see more of Stone Town, a nearby Spice Farm and to experience Zanzibar’s cuisine in an authentic way. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip and I would recommend to anyone who is keen to get an insight into the local culture.

We had a great experience with Lutfia on our honeymoon! I love nothing more than perusing food stores and markets in other countries, so to be able to actually shop with a local and then spend the afternoon cooking regional recipes was a dream. Lutfia was so easygoing and a pleasure to spend time with. At the spice farm, we enjoyed the tour and demonstrations from the locals. I ended up asking for every recipe we made which Lutfia happily sent me afterwards - it was all SO good!
My advice for others booking this tour:
1) wear shoes you're comfortable getting dirty - you'll be walking through some puddles and wet market stalls in the fish/meat section.
2) wear something comfortable that you can sit on the floor in for the cooking portion. I also would not recommend ladies wear a jumpsuit - the bathroom at the spice farm was a single stall with a pit toilet. Private enough but if i did it again i wouldve worn comfortable pants. Bring hand sanitizer.
3) I believe they recently switched farms, which made for about a 45 min ride to and from the city vs the 20 or so we expected from other reviews. Really cool to see the area outside of stone town so we didnt mind, but it meant we were an hour later getting back to our hotel than we'd planned. So give yourself a little wiggle room in the schedule - it's worth it not to be rushed!
4) Bring plenty of cash - you don't need it for the market, but you'll want to tip Lutfia, the driver, and the spice farm tour guides (we had 3) plus leave yourself extra to buy some of the spices and products they sell at the farm. We ended up having to stop at an ATM on the way back which was a hassle.

Wonderful Experience! Lutfia and Rashid were so kind and welcoming. We were lucky enough to have a private market, spice farm and cooking class. Learned so much from spice guide Abdullah too! Our meal was delicious. Would highly recommended mend this for anyone wanting a genuine Zanzi experience. Many thanks Lutfia and Rashid!
