We chose Simpson Tours as they offered a late afternoon tour, which fit in with our drive to Monument Valley from Mesa Verde. They offered both a standard 2 hour tour as well as a 4 hour “Dreamcatcher Tour” which included the 2 hour tour as well as a Navajo dinner, cultural focus, and music and dancing. I called the owner, Ralph, a few days ahead of time and he explained the tours in great detail. We did the Dreamcatcher, and this was a true highlight of our 2 1/2 week Grand Circle trip! Jamie, our guide, drove us in an open truck around the standard monuments, as well as into the backcountry areas accessible only to the Native American guides. He was full of humorous anecdotes, and took us to amazing vistas, rock formations, petroglyphs, and other sites we never imagined finding in Monument Valley. The last half of the tour was at the base of a cliff with a campfire and Navajo Tacos, much of which was cooked over the fire. This was probably the tastiest meal we had on our trip. After dinner, Harold Simpson, the founder of Simpson Tours, came and discussed Navajo heritage and life, both past and present, and this was followed by amazing drumming, chanting, and dancing by Harold and Jamie. Don’t miss this tour. Simpson Tours does an incredible job for a very reasonable price.

We enjoyed this evening tour and going off the main road so we saw things you can only see with a Navaho guide. We did the drive the day before on our own and glad we did because this tour does not take you to everything you can see on your own. When you get to the Navaho Welcome Center go ahead and buy your entrance tickets. Then check in with your driver. Our tour guide was Cody. We let him know we had bought our tickets and he told us to drive up to The View hotel and he would meet us there. On your way up you will stop to show your entrance tickets. When you get to the hotel park in the lot to the right. That is where the tour trucks pick people up. If you park in the left lot, you’ll just need to walk a short distance to get to the pick up lot. Cody was very informative. As the sun is going down, Cody will drive you to a picnic area where you will get dinner. The beef was so tough, you can barely chew it. The fry bread was good and had beans and cheese. We enjoyed the performance. We stayed at Goulding’s Lodge, so it was a close and convenient drive back to our room.

Great tour - our guide Cory was funny and had a wonderful sense of humour- he went out of his way to show us new things

Our tour started about 35 minutes late due to one group having issues making it to Monument Valley from Phoenix. Once we got started the tour went our way. Jamie was good at letting us know about things, helping with pictures, etc. Once we left the main road that most people CAN drive themselves, we went to the back 40 and got to see different areas that the general public doesn't. We visited several wonderful spots and this is where Jamie strength as a guide shined. He would take special pictures of us making the memories even better. Once the main part of the tour was over the sun heading down for the night, we were taken to a special picnic area where they had our supper cooked and waiting for us. Navajo tacos with a side of steak. The Navajo ladies out did themselves feeding us. Once it was fully dark Harold, a fellow Navajo Indian joined us and told us stories, history of the Navajo and explained the Navajo traditions of The Clans. Later Jamie our guide came out dressed to the nines in his Indian grab and danced for us and Harold played and sang for us. Great job all the way around.

Our tour was delayed for about 30 minutes because 2 of the guests were busy packing something for their overnight stay at hogan. The tour guide was great in helping us passing the time. Dinner was so so. Steak was tough to chew. Make sure to bring your own drinking water and go to restroom before the tour. Be aware that there are no running water and restroom available at dinner place.

This was an excellent tour! Jamie did an outstanding job of providing information, humor and fun all along the way. We really felt that he went the extra mile to make this an enjoyable and personal trip. Jamie took many interesting pictures for each member of the group--he seemed to have a great command of photography. He provided a surprise singing and flute performance at one stop on the trip. We are so glad we chose the dinner tour--we received so much more for the money! We are touring the southwest for one month and this has been our favorite event.

I absolutely loved this tour! Cody was warm and funny - and he really went the extra mile to help my 77 year old mother who has mobility issues to enjoy the experience, too. I especially loved the cultural and spiritual stories and hearing the Dineh language while viewing the natural wonders of Monument Valley. The weather was perfect, and seeing the Milky Way and sky full of stars during the evening dancing filled my heart with peace. I relished every moment.

Fantastic! We had a wonderful guide and great trip. A good cultural experience, Cody was a great guide, flute player, singer, and photographer! Dinner was beautiful under the stars and with a full moon too!

Yes, there are restricted sections of the main valley floor that are accessible only with a Navajo guide. I don’t recall the names of the locations, but they mostly involved structures and viewpoints not seen from the main road. They were interesting and for me they were the highlight of the trip. The post-tour Navajo experience was average at best, but that may have been a function of the participants that evening, other people have had different experiences. So in general, one of these tours is definitely recommended.
Hi! My friends and I plan to visit the park in mid to late October. I’m concerned about running out of daylight. Can you please tell me what time the tour starts and ends. Do you adjust the time of the tour for the shorter days of daylight? Many thanks.

Hello. I read your response to a post on trip advisor about this evening tour. I'm hoping you can provide some advice or details for me. I will be traveling with my active 82 yo mother to the southwest area in July. I will be doing all the driving as she will sit back and enjoy the ride. We will be staying in Mexican Hat , about 20 miles (highway route 163) north of the View Hotel where the tour starts and ends. This sounds like a great activity. Since it is in the evening, I’m concerned about the night time drive back to our lodgings. What time does the tour end and would this road be difficult to drive at night? I imagine it is a well traveled road so not too desolate. I would appreciate your advice. Thank you.

We stayed about 20 miles south in Kayenta. Road was good but dark and little traffic. Don’t know how it would be to the north. Our biggest problem was finding our way out of the View Hotel parking lot. Not well marked. I think the tour ended around 9 pm. Enjoy!

The View Hotel is inside Monument Valley pretty much on the border of Arizona and Utah. Salt Lake City would be hours from there.

It was a steak, fry bread and the topping were tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, beans.
It was really good.
Drink was soda or water.
We had a blast! It was a fantastic evening by the bon fire.
