I rented horses from John an d Kay for years...they are truly honest and great people. Please don’t rent a horse and take them into the back country if you don’t have a lot of experience. These horses know that...and they don’t want to be rolled over an edge. The guy with the “0” score is in my estimation a Nuby and should have never tried to rent horses....
Back to John and Kay... I’m back East now...and I have no idea if I will ever get a chance to travel the high country with just my dog and 2 horses for 2 weeks...best time of my life.

We made a last minute reservation because of change in plans and had no clue what kind of a place is it! Naturally, we were in for a surprise when we saw our set-up for the night - we were living in an RV converted into a mini hotel room with 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room and a functional kitchen! The place is a right by Blue Mesa reservoir and has a lot of activities on the site itself - It's a very rustic looking site (gives you a peek into a very authentic old-world ranch charm) with a game room, hot tub and many horses (which you can ride for a fee).
Nothing is locked on the site and the owner and the staff are very friendly. We loved our experience here - If you are around Gunnison, I would you highly recommend spending a night here! One of the high-points of our trip!

My friend and I were in Gunnison in August, and came to Ferro's for a last minute ride. John treated us to a ride, while Kay manned the store. We absolutely loved our time out on the ride with John - it was just the 3 of us for 2 hours, and it flew by. The scenery was beautiful, we saw lots of deer, and John kept us entertained the whole time. He is quite the storyteller!
We would recommend this to anyone going through Gunnison. We spent 2 weeks traveling around Colorado, and this is one of our favorite parts of our trip. You can tell they love their work and make it a great experience! We got hugs as we left, they treated us like family!

We have been going to Ferrro's Blue Mesa Ranch for close to 10 years. Always go in September and take a string of horses on a pack trip for Elk season. These horses have always been reliable, healthy and broke enough that any green horn could handle them. We live and sleep with these horses for 7 plus days and rely on them daily to carry us up mountains, pack our gear, pack out our elk, ride thru kill sites with bear activity, ride in storms, ride at night... need I say more. At camp they are easy keepers, well behaved and quiet. These are the same horses that get used all summer for trail rides, which is a walk in the park for these animals.
John and Kay Ferro are good, honest salt of the earth people who know their livestock and go out of their way to make sure you are matched up with the right horse and will do whatever they can to make sure everything is OK. We look forward to seeing them every time we go.
John and Kay, the wranglers and the horses are all real, authentic slices of western life who make their living carrying everything from laughing children in the summer, to rifles and elk quarters in the fall on the backs of these Rocky Mountain Tested , been there done that , all around handy horses. Take a ride and let these good people and good horses do their job the way it should be done.

When we pulled up to the trashy, junk-laden property, we were greeted by a barking, growling dog, which a woman had to come control before it would let us step out of the car. The facility was filthy, with discarded items piled around the decrepit buildings and trailers. Most importantly, the horses did not appear to be cared for properly. As we left the stable we noticed that all the horses were kept in a muddy pen, and when I asked the trail guide if the horses had a pasture to graze in, he said no. In addition, we learned that the owner of the ranch refused to shoe his horses. We were told that his reasoning was "Because they need to be in pain when they walk so they won't try to run with guests on their backs." I was absolutely appalled that a horse owner would purposely not shoe his horses with the intention of causing them pain, and then put paying guests on their backs. The terrain is extremely rocky and covered in low, thorny shrubs, and during our trail ride the horses tripped and stumbled repeatedly. I fear that it might be because of this failure to care for their animals properly that the accident happened on our ride. My sister-in-law's horse reared back and fell on top of her, causing her to have to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. Her horse was in the middle of a slow-moving line and nothing had spooked the horses in front of her, so I am afraid that the horse might have stepped on something very sharp or had something sharp in its hoof and reared back in pain.
I do not recommend this ranch. There are plenty of well-maintained facilities in the Gunnison Valley area that care for their horses, so please go to one of those and not this one. The views from the ride were pretty and the ranch hands were nice, but I would not put those things above the importance of proper care for the horses.

Heather, the person who wrote this negative review, must have done so without regard to a long standing personable and successful business, only to show her disdain regarding an accident her sister-in-law endured while riding a horse.
It's very unfortunate that this accident happened at the very end of their ride, a stone's throw from the facility. They all said what fun the ride was and complimented the wrangler for his good job. The state of Colorado requires everyone to sign a waiver relieving the owner of the horses of any fault since they have no control of the horses while in their care. This is required for any type of such activity, i.e. rafting, rock climbing, etc. Due to the lack of knowledge of horses by most people, the wrangler gives instructions prior to leaving on the ride, which includes pulling back on the reins. The other family members on the ride shared that her horse was eating grass and when Jocelyn pulled on the reins to stop her, she pulled too hard making the horse rear up causing her to fall. We are very sorry that she was injured, but in our 24 years of horseback riding on the same trail, this is only the 2nd incident we've had at our facility. I'm sure that Heather is very sympathetic to her injuries, as were our staff, but it is wrong for a person to falsify the facts and exaggerate about everything out of anger, which Heather did repeatedly. I called 911 immediately and then I personally called the injured person the next morning to see how she was and to show our concern. Our wrangler also called a couple of days later to find out how she was. The terrain in and around the Gunnison area is totally different than Georgia's. We have natural sage (with no thorns) which she referred to as "thorny shrubs". Our herd consists of many Mustangs who run wild with no shoes and our horses receive a Mustang trim which protects the pads of their feet. We most certainly DO NOT mistreat our horses as they have been a part of our livelihood for a very long time. We do culture camps with kids and ride many first timers all through the summer. I do not know what she referred to as trash around the buildings-just another exaggeration. I shouldn't have to explain any more as this was through no fault of ours. I'm sure people will see through her review as others already have and written good reviews.

Our family loves to experience the culture of the places we travel to. Ferro's Blue Mesa Ranch came highly recommended by experienced ranchers in the Grand Valley and we left completely satisfied and eager to come back again. Our family of four went on the 2-hour horseback riding guided tour. Riding helmets are provided at no additional cost. John led the way, while two experienced ranchers assisted our family by following alongside us. John stopped along the way and periodically provided us with some beautiful history about the land we were traveling through. Our two children, ages 10 and 12, had not been on horses before this, but because of the support from the ranchers and guide, felt confident and cared for. We saw some of the most beautiful scenery on this ride. As our day ended, we felt like part of the family. John and Kay seem to love sharing the beauty of Blue Mesa with visitors and have put so much love into their ranch. We loved the family atmosphere. The ranch is not your typical "fancy" place, but it is a place that you will feel welcomed and cared for -and that is what allowed us to take in the great memories.

Arrived at their location for a much anticipated horse ride.....we are all "semi-experienced" riders and were lured by a nice website that mentioned Mustangs and group rides and experienced guides, etc....not so much...
Upon our arrival we were a little apprehensive at the appearance of the place but it's a horse operation so we walked inside. Once inside we were bombarded with postings of placards and e-mails and other postings of an extreme political nature......whatever your politics are, if you are running a business, perhaps you would keep that sort of diatribe to your office......if not I hope others have the gumption to do what we should have....run away!!!
After a brief transaction to pay for our ride, we were told that the wrangler was out on a ride still and would be back "soon"...so we looked around.......BAD IDEA!! The living conditions and the conditions of the horses on this property were deplorable!! Many animals were CLEARLY undernourished and had obvious untreated wounds....the fences around the "pasture" area were all topped with barbed wire(?) and there was zero evidence that the horses waste was being managed......
At this point we were skeptical that we wanted to ride these horses mostly out of sympathy for the animals and not wanting to put an underfed horses through a long ride......This was not a problem though because when we approached the area where the horses were waiting for us along with the Wrangler (and an assistant wrangler - who was smoking in the tack-up area...a real no-no for those who know proper horse care), the Wrangler questioned our need/desire to ride for the length of time we reserved.....clearly we didn't know what we were capable of and he knew better....or he was tired from his previous ride and wanted a shorter day of it.
All in all, we got our money back, said adios and left this horrid place in our rear view mirror....I suggest that you not even make the trip to their location...but if you do...."I told you so"......

We have owned this beautiful property overlooking the lake for 25 years very successfully, having been doing horseback rides for 23 years with no problems to either our visitors or our horses. This person was here approx. 15 mins. and made an unfair assessment. Evidently he doesn't know anything about western horse ranches who all use barb wire in their fencing for various reasons. Yes, we had one mare who was showing some hip as she had a filly in April at age 23, almost unheard of. The filly took a lot of nourishment from her, but the mare eats very well. She was our 2nd horse and we love her, so will keep her until she expires. Horses bite each other, therefore, the untreated wounds he must have been referring to. This is definitely not a Kentucky Bluegrass horse racing facility as he may be accustomed to. Everyone loves our horses and have been told that our ride is the very best in the entire area and we have so much repeat business every year. I don't know why someone would take the time to make such a false review and try to ruin someone's good standing business.
