If you’ve ever wondered about Philly’s murals

As you walk or drive around Philly, you see murals everywhere. Ever wonder about them? Well, our daughters gave us a 2-hour walking tour through the Mural Arts program and it was fantastic. The knowledgeable guide not only shared good stories, but she pointed out how to do a self-guided tour using the labels on the murals. If you’re curious, you’ll love this tour. I saw this beautiful young woman (pictured mural, by Target on Chestnut) out my office window and the tour allowed me to learn her story. Very inspiring.

Mural Arts Walking Tour

I traveled via train from Maryland to Philly on September 2nd to get a taste of the mural arts for which the city is known. There were about 16 visitors in the group. Tour guide Caroll was passionate and articulate about her city and public art. I hadn't been in Philly for over a decade since being there for about 1 day in a hotel for business...so this was also my reintroduction to the historic American city. I knew that it would be hot so just plan for that if you visit in the summer time. There were no hills or extreme terrain.:) Get comfy shoes and bring an umbrella for the sunny days! Bring some snacks to keep up your energy while walking. I like to explore places on foot so the 2 hours of slow paced walking was not a problem for me..several opportunities to pause when the guide tells stories and answers questions. It was a unique and pleasant way to check out the city.

tour tres interessant du programme de peinture mural avec un guide tout a fait interessant et qui a su s'adapter à notre niveau d'anglais.
il nous a permis non seulement de voir les oeuvres mais également de comprendre le programme social et urbanistique de la ville de Philadelphie

Great way to explore the city

This was a really fun and informative way to learn more about the murals that are all over the city. It inspired me to do a self-guided tour to find more of the beautiful murals in other areas of the city. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and use the restroom before the tour begins, as there are not really bathroom breaks along the way. Also be mindful of the fact that the tour does not bring you back to PAFA. It's not a long walk, but you do not end up at your starting point.

Mural Arts with an Inspiring Public Purpose

I took the Mural Mile walking tour with Mike. He was a terrific guide and really helped us understand the inspiration behind the mural arts project in Philadelphia. It's a great story, and each of the murals we visited had an interesting back story which Mike shared. Mike indicated there are approximately 1,600 murals remaining of the 4,000 that have been painted; a veritable outdoor art gallery. I would take a second tour with a different focus on a future visit to Philly.

Great for a fan of street art

We did the mural mile walking tour on a very hot day in July so I admit that part of my tepid review is likely influenced by the heat. The mural program in Philadelphia is amazing! They are everywhere and gorgeous. The guide did a good job of telling us about the program and the artists. I felt that the tour dragged a bit but that may have been the heat. It took nearly 2.5 hours.

Even better than we expected

My 20 year old daughter and I did the Mural Mile South walking tour on a hot June Saturday. The murals themselves are fascinating, and our tour guide's knowledge of historical and cultural context added much to our experience. Philadelphia is fortunate to have this wonderful program, it really enriches the city. Highly recommend this tour for visitors and locals alike.

Great way to explore parts of Philly

Philadelphia is the outdoor mural capital of the world with more than 2,500 murals on the sides of buildings around the city. Originally started to combat urban graffitti, the Philadelphia Mural Arts program operates from a small spartan studio in the Gallery Shopping Mall on Market Street while splashing gorgeous and fantastic visions of possible worlds in unlikely and unlooked for spots across the city. The Mural Mile tour, an easy walk around center city, takes the viewers past murals rooted in visions of the city past, present and hoped for future. We have walked the Mural Mile tour with out of town friends and found it both an illuminating and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon or long summer evening. The walk takes visitors into some of Philly's most charming neighborhoods. The Mural Mile tour is free and self-guided while other mural tours have fees and are guided by Mural Arts staff. Some tours are conducted on trollys, bikes and even the Market-Frankford elevated line. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

Walking the Mural Mile

Shared a great afternoon with a group of friends walking The Mural Mile in Philadelphia. Before starting out, our excellent volunteer guide shared with us the history of the Mural Project, which began in the 1980s as a way to involve local youth in filling city walls with art instead of graffiti.Philadelphia has over 3000 murals and on our walking tour we explored 15. The guide provided fascinating details about each mural. We walked about two miles through center city.
We also met one of the artists who designs and supervises the painting of the murals. This is a great way to explore this historic city.

There are over 300 murals on buildings throughout Philadelphia. There is a walking tour of 15 of the murals. You can do as many as you want.
