The Whitney Plantation does a wonderful job of telling the history of enslaved people and their place in American history. Highly recommend to all. The driver, Ken (Kendrel) was so knowledgeable, personable and phenomenal. He provided us so much education, culture, and had great jokes. We really enjoyed the experience and makes the hour + drive to and from pass very quickly.

Whitney Plantation does a wonderful job of telling the history of the slaves and not focusing on the Plantation owners. Highly recommend. Also 5 stars to our driver, Ken, who was phenomenal. He gave us so much history, culture, and had great jokes. We really enjoyed him and makes the hour + drive seem so short.

A really insightful tour highlighting the truly harrowing experiences of the African Americans used as slaves. The audio tour is informative and the mix of story telling and quotes from archives works really well. The artwork and sculptures were also very powerful.
Getting there from central New Orleans, our bus driver was really knowledgeable about the city and Louisiana in general, which also added to the experience. I thoroughly recommend it.

Walking this property left a powerful imprint on all of us. The Whitney plantation has thoughtfully and artfully preserved the reality endured by countless enslaved men, women and children. This is an important place… go experience it for yourself. We must never forget.
Our tour guide, Alton, with the Gray Line Bus was an excellent story teller… rich with local history & current day events & landmarks. We learned so much… I even took notes to research more later. Alton is a real asset to New Orleans, and he made the entire experience unforgettable!

This tour is a MUST of visiting the NOLA area. This plantation tour is not about pretty architecture or landscape. It's about an honest candid study of the enslaved lives on plantations and how it relates to our Country's history and NOLA's. Thet were short handed the day we visited and had the great fortune of having Ollie, the General Manager, conduct our tour. If you go, book a Guided Tour prior. It will make all the difference in your experience. They do offer self-guided tour with an audio listening device, but have the guide is best. Our group had some very good questions presented and subsequent conversations. Just a fantastic experience here! Even our pre-teen and teenage kids enjoyed it. It did not "feel" like an educational field trip, but rather an eye opening encounter. They both stayed engaged the length of the tour. I hope ALL the guides are as passionate and knowledgeable as Ollie was.

The tour itself was amazing. It was self-guided, and Nalatia, the young lady in the information center, was excellent. Her manager, on the other hand, was quite the jerk, more concerned with boasting about his phone being the latest and greatest than trying to make sure that those of us that had already paid for the tour had access to the handheld devices we needed since the app wasn't updated to meet the requirements of our Android phones. The tour was very informative, and I liked that it focused on the slaves who worked at the plantation and their daily lives. I would highly recommend this tour. Our bus driver, Darren, was also very informative and provided a lot of information about the surrounding plantations. He also slowed down for us to take pictures along the way.

Whitney was great, and I'll get to it, but our tour guide, Ken, was a true professional. He was so knowledgeable and clearly had a genuine care for serving as the bus driver and guide out to the location. He went so far above and beyond to tell us about everything noteworthy we passed and slowed down during the peak points of interest so people could take photos. His general presence was also pleasant, like your favorite teacher from high school. I would give him 10 stars if I could.
About the Plantation itself. Powerful experience that is very well done. There likely is nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. So glad we took this tour as it is well worth the time.

We’ll researched history of the people who built and created the area, the slaves. Touching and frightening. We took the last guided tour of the day so we didn’t have as much time as we wanted as it closed at 4:30. Highly recommend you walk the area after the tour to see it all!

If you are going to do a plantation tour in LA, this is the one to do. This plantation tour is entirely dedicated to telling the story of slavery. They do not glamorize the old south. They don't whitewash it. They do not sugar coat it. They provide first hand accounts from former enslaved people from the Federal Writers Project.
As a white person, will you feel uncomfortable? Yes. But that's ok — we all should be uncomfortable with what happened. It's part of the learning process. It's important to educate ourselves about what happened because lord knows the public school system isn't going to do it.
Our tour guide was fantastic and very personable. I only wish we had a little longer to explore the grounds because we had the last guided tour of the day and they close the grounds pretty shortly after it ended.

It is a mind opening experience for people of all colors. Hearing the stories from the viewpoint of the enslaved people brings it to life as well.

Only wish the tour had an extra 30-45min, the time allotted was only enough to listen to the audio tour and didn't leave time to read all the plaques. I downloaded the app and the audio tour was very well done, interesting, and concise. If you plan on only seeing one Plantation, make it this one - it's the only one that focuses on the slaves experience and stories. Can't recommend this activity enough!

Since we did not have a personal or rental car our only option was to book a tour. This tour was in high demand; the bus was packed. Plantation focus is unique from others which I believe explains the number of attendees.

We hired a car to drive to the Whitney which was easy to find, but if you want to travel by coach you’ll need to ask the company. Do go though - don’t let anything be a barrier. It’s a very beautiful place even though the truth it reveals and remembers is so ugly.

I have limited mobility, in that I can do some light walking and can climb stairs slowly with a banister. Is your tour a good fit for me?

The facility is very flat. Stairs into the church and slave quarters. A woman in a motorized wheelchair was able to navigate easily up ramps and the grounds.

For just the Whitney tour. Starts at 1pm and ends at what time?
I’m guessing the 5 hour one is for visiting both plantations.
Thanks

The Whitney Tour I think took about 1.5 hrs. It is a guided tour with a staff member taking you around the plantation and giving you history of what happened . Our guide was absolutely fantastic!
