This day trip for the Matanuska Glacier Hike was booked through my travel agency. Unfortunately, my mom ended up getting sick and tested positive for COVID the day before the trip, so our agent called to cancel her portion of the trip. Russ Reno (the owner of Anchorage Downtown TourGroup) spoke with our agent directly and agreed to refund my mom's portion of the trip.
Russ told my agent that he would pick me up at any location I wanted on the morning of the tour and that he would call me at 7:30 PM the night before the trip. I gave my agent the location, which was a nearby hotel. (We were staying at an Airbnb and I didn't want him to pick me up there.) When Russ called me at 7:30 PM the night before, (I was driving through spotty coverage so he left a voicemail and I called him back around 7:45 PM), he made it clear that he was doing me a special favor by canceling my mom's part of the trip and taking me without her. He told me he wanted me to wear a mask and that he would as well, but that he wouldn't mention to anyone else that my mom had COVID once we got to the glacier. No problem on my end but it did seem he was very bothered by this situation. He then told me he would not pick me up at the hotel I suggested and said he "wanted me to meet him downtown" in the Fred Meyer parking lot. This was strange to me - why offer to pick me up (he also advertises and offers this - when you're going to renege on that?) I chalked it up as Russ being rough around the edges, which is fine with me.
To gain clarity on what the experience was going to be like, I had to ask several probing questions. (What is included in the tour - food, gear, etc.? How long is the actual hike on the glacier? How long is the trip to/from? What is the location of the glacier?) Through this conversation, I got the impression that it was just going to be me and him on the drive to/from the glacier, which he then confirmed only after I asked. After speaking with Russ, I began to feel uncomfortable with this and decided I would prefer to drive myself. (I had a rental car.) As a woman, you have to follow those instincts every time - safety is more important than hiking the glacier and I my gut was telling me not to spend 5 hours (round trip) in the car with this man.
I texted him at 8:48 PM (AT) and let him know that I would prefer to drive myself and meet him/the group at the glacier. My understanding was that I would be meeting a tour group at the glacier, so in my mind, I was doing something that felt more comfortable and safe to me while also being mindful of him by keeping him from having to make special arrangements to transport me to/from the glacier. He said I wouldn't get a refund for the tour, which left me confused because I wasn't asking to cancel anything so I asked for clarification.
He then became angry and started texting me in all caps. Because I was so concerned about his elevated state, I followed up by calling him. (Speaking often helps calm people and provide clarity.) When we spoke, he told me he was very angry with me and hollered at me over the phone. (I am not one to get escalated and was calm but rattled by his behavior.) When I asked for clarification and tried to understand what exatly the problem was, he continued to become more and more upset. Eventually, he hung up on me. Needless to say, I was at a complete loss of what had just transpired and why Russ was so angry with me. He told me a couple of times that he didn't appreciate being contacted at night, during his personal time, and that he didn't have to help me out. (To be clear, I wasn't demanding anything from him. I simply wanted to arrange a meet up at the glacier instead of traveling with him.) I kindly pointed out that the first time he contacted me to coordinate anything was at 7:30 PM. That doesn't leave much wiggle room to work out kinks or details before an early morning (7:00 AM) departure. That's poor planning on his part, in my humble opinion.
My travel agency has a 24/7 hotline for support, so I called and spoke with them about the situation and got help. They took over from there. When I spoke with my agent the following morning, she shared that both she and the person from the 24/7 hotline had the same experience trying to communicate with Russ. He was angry, belligerent, swore profusely, and put blame on the individual he was speaking with. In short, he was highly unprofessional and inappropriate. The travel agency has the recordings of their conversations with Russ and, at this point, have sent those to their higher-ups who are reporting Russ for his behavior.
This was emotionally abusive, uncalled for, highly deplorable behavior on Russ' part. No one - no matter what - deserves to be treated as I was in my interactions with him. In the end, I chose not to join the tour (my agency will refund me) for my own safety and security.
Sure, we all have our moments of frustration and weakness. However, I would caution anyone against going with Russ. Save yourself some trauma and grief and book with a different company. So many Alaskans offer amazing services with great kindness and excellent customer service.
I chose to go with another group and look forward to an amazing, drama-free experience.
P.S. I've noticed that Russ comments on all negative reviews, primarily to claim that people are lying or leaving false reviews. A good leader and someone who gives excellent customer service would simply apologize to the customer and make it right - no questions asked. It's not Russ who is being taken advantage of. He simply isn't providing good practice or service.

Russ is an authentic Alaskan gem! Nothing beats local knowledge and we loved his laid back style and stories (and artefacts) from the area on our trip to the glacier. Loved the supermarket pit stop to select our own lunch. The glacier hike was a highlight for these two Aussies! Stunning formations. Choose this tour group to support a genuine Alaskan local.

DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST TOURS I HAVE EXPERIENCED IN ALASKA!!!! Our driver Russ was fantastic (very informative about region/culture): we stopped off for purchasing of our lunch at shops and then ate in the car on the way (car mini van was very comfortable). Once we were at the glacier, Ethan and Molly were our glacier tour guides (they too were FANTASTIC). It started with fitting of cleats (helmet wasn’t required) and definitely ask for a pole! YOU MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN (I was SEVERELY BURNT ON MY FACE/NECK/SCALP!!! We walked down gravel/mud path to the snow mobile sled which took us across the frozen lake! Then we walked (approx 2 hours) with cleats across and up into the glacier. MAGNIFICENT!!!! Definitely definitely definitely worth it!!! Ethan and Molly made our experience memorable. There were a few really difficult areas to navigate (I haven’t been to the snow in a very long time) and there might be some difficulty for those with mobility issues etc however our group split into two so that the adventurous ones could go on to the difficult climb! Definitely one of the highlights of my Alaskan trip! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!!! MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN

It is on must see list when visiting Alaska. It is so beautiful and feel like in another world. It was cold at beginning of walk and then getting warmer after walking a while.

Our driver cancelled on our tour 20 min before our pickup citing illness and van issues. No other drivers were able to pick us up that day and unfortunately we couldn’t reschedule on another day since we were booked everyday. The driver and owner were very nice though and they gave us a full refund. If there are any issues, they should have scheduled another driver to get us at least the day before and not the morning of.

No you are correct, there were no other drivers available and I require my drivers to be in excellent health before sending them on a tour. When my driver finally was able to inform me about the issues with her van I found out she was not well and was worried about doing the tour in the first place. I was upset that she had not called off the night before but I insisted we cancel for your safety. I am sorry we were unable to accommodate you. But certain standards are necessary these days and I am not going to take a chance of getting you sick from one of my staff. I do take full resin ability for not being able to speak with you earlier in the day. I am baffled why you choose to attack my business for doing the right thing for your protection. Especially when you received a timely refund in full. I am sorry we were unable to provide your tour as promised. Russ - Owner +1 (907) 802-7444

Had a great experience with this tour! I am a solo traveler and felt safe and comfortable the whole time. It was a perfect day trip with beautiful scenery! We stopped in Palmer to grab a deli lunch and take with us, stopped at the Matanuska gift shop on the way in to get souvenirs and postcards, and stopped a few other places on the road to take pictures. Our driver was very knowledgeable and had great communication before and during the trip. The glacier tour provides spikes and helmet, but I would recommend taking your own trekking poles if you don't have the best balance.

The whole journey is organized and efficient. Juls is our guide for glacier trip. During the trips, she talks about the history and the natives in Alaska. And Juls teaches us to look for dots on the cliff to find animals. She made our trip wonderful!

Fantastic tour! A small glitch with communication the night before, but it was worked out early in the morning and it was smooth sailing after that. Don picked us up at the hotel, we stopped for sandwiches on the way up & arrived at the Glacier in good time. Meghan took our group out on a beautiful sunny day for a 2 1/2 hour hike all along the glacier. It was awesome!! Meghan was great, very informative and kept an eye on the whole group, making sure we were comfortable with the journey. After the hike, we hooked back up with Don & had our lunch at the bottom of the glacier on the picnic tables. Then Don drove us back to our hotel in Anchorage. I highly recommend this tour!!

We booked this two days before and we were accommodated no problem. It is about a 2.5 hour beautiful drive from downtown anchorage. The check in process where you pay is very friendly and accommodating. Form there you dive to where you meet your glacier guide. That is where they explained the process and gave you your helmet. Our guide was fantastic. We had 5 people on our group from 22 to 55 years old. Each walk is different depending on the ice and number/type of people in your group. The guide was very helpful and knowledgeable about what we did and saw. It was about a 2.5 hour walk that was simply amazing. We made it pretty high and the views were great. At no time did I feel unsafe and learning to walk in crampons was easy. I would recommend this to anyone visiting anchorage. They give a substantial discount for military or local residents. I can't say enough good things about the whole experience.

We came to Alaska for the first time and we really enjoyed our very first tour here with Juls was excellent. She was very informative and made our trip very comfortable. Matanuska walk was something we’d never experienced before and it was amazing. Thank you Juls for the enjoyable day.
