Incredible museum, both the buildings and the history, as well as the priceless artifacts. They have the actual cape and hat given to Captain Cook upon his arrival in Hawaii, many shark tooth weapons, etc. and the museum gives you a great overview of Native Hawaiian cosmology and history. I learned so much!

A little over-rated for a "top place to see" however it is a big museum. The Hawaiin history of the kings is neat to see. The kings took over the islands for power and control. The museum asks for $5.00 parking fee at a kiosk.

Very informative museum that tells the history of the isles in a clear way, connecting modern-day Hawai’i to developments since the arrival of the first people. We particularly liked the connection to traditional ideas about the land and the sea.

What a beautiful museum! Hawaiian and Pacific island artifacts, royal artifacts, royal history, and paintings. Lovely gift shop as well. Add this place to your itinerary!

Three generations of our family went to the Bishop Museum and everyone enjoyed it. Several of us had been before when we lived in Hawaii. The museum has been upgraded and is really nice. We spent a couple hours and didn't see it all. We got a discount on our tickets. I would suggest visitors check online for discounts.

Extensive collection of cultural and natural history artifacts give an overview of many aspects of Hawaii. Four adults, a 4 year old and 7 year old were fascinated and engaged for four hours. A mix of static, outdoor, indoor, interactive and children’s museum exhibits can be visited in any order when interest wanes.

This review applies only to: the large building dedicated to the Hawaiian exhibits (where I spent several hours); the restaurant (where I ate); and the gift shop (where I browsed the books).
After reading all of the 5-star TripAdvisor reviews, I was really looking forward to the Bishop Museum. But after my visit, I (a huge museum-lover) can only give it a "meh." The various Hawaiian exhibits, in my judgment, are not particularly well-thought-out, nor are they logically arranged in relationship to one another. And they don't go into enough depth for grown-ups.
Quite a few of the artifacts the museum has are fascinating, but quite a few are not, and I think nearly all of them would be better-served if they were accompanied by more in-depth descriptions.
In the museum, there is a small exhibit dedicated to two native Hawaiians who have won Olympic gold medals. It was so-so. By contrast, at the main Honolulu airport, there is a small exhibit concerning native Hawaiians who were war heroes. This airport exhibit was much more interesting, went into much more depth, and featured many more articles on display. When a museum gets outdone by an airport, I think it's a bad sign.
Younger kids (4 to 12) will probably enjoy the Hawaiian exhibits, but older kids are likely to be bored.
The restaurant's menu was limited and offered few standard choices, and my meal was quite average.
The gift shop's selection of books concerning Hawaii was disappointingly limited.
The staff ranged from relatively friendly and helpful to very friendly and helpful.
With so many other things available to do on O'ahu--many of them amazing and/or once-in-a-lifetime--I would only recommend the Bishop Museum to families with younger children.

I went to the Bishop Museum while Grumpy was working. The grounds are lovely, the building itself is absolutely beautiful, and the exhibits are extensive. My favorites were pretty much everything in Hawaiian Hall and Pacific Hall. I saw two of the movies playing in the planetarium; Wayfinders: Waves, Winds, and Stars, and Ngã Tohunga Whakatere: The Navigators. I also visited the portrait/feather standard room. I wish I was able to spend many more hours exploring the different buildings and the grounds. This museum is an absolute must see.

Best museum I have ever been in! The building itself is fabulous with it's old style of wooden structure. The artifacts inside are beyone what I expected showing ways of life from early settlement to recent times. Even had some interactive items. Would recommend to anyone.

Terri,
Since the Waikiki "Purple" line is still not running (cancelled due to Covid), you can get their from the resort area taking the regular public bus system (see Museum website for direction info). It doesnt drop you off at the museum (about two blocks away) and it will take about an hour. I would taxi or uber, and pay the money to save time. We had a rental car, so 10 minutes with no traffic on a Saturday. I recomend to get an early timed ticket for the Bishop (well worth it).
