Cromwell to Clyde - What an amazing trip!
From the clear communication beforehand, to the warm welcome, local tales, and excellent intro to the bikes and trail.... the whole day was exceptional.
Ian picked everyone up and took us through to our start point in Cromwell, where we were set up, and instructed on the bikes and trail. We hit the track, and a short way down the road, Ian met us in a carpark the trail passes through, to make sure we were all comfortable.
Ian also advised on a few places to stop along the way - Carrick winery and Burger/Coffee afloat (although a tad on the pricey side - the branded bacon buttie was the best I've had!). If getting something to eat at Burger Afloat; make sure you have time for your food to settle, or eat half and save the rest until after you ride up the hill (I chose this option)!!
The trail itself is stunning. Mostly easy riding, however there are a couple of big climbs, which would be a challenge if you're not a regular hill climber on your bike.... these were manageable on the e-bike, but still made me puff!
After going OVER the final bridge, we found Ian waiting for us again. He took care of the bikes while we toddled in to the beautiful township of Clyde for a well earned drink.
I was a solo traveler, however the group took me under their wing as we cycled the trail. There were also other riders on the trail, so even if I was riding completely alone, it wouldn't have felt that way.
I would highly recommend NZ Bike Trails to help you tick this trail off your bucket list.

We love it when guests have such an enjoyable ride. There is no better way to see the beauty of New Zealand than by bike. We are truly humbled to have been part of your ‘Best cycle ever in NZ’.
If you loved the Dunstan Trail you will love the Roxburgh Gorge - another NZ Great Ride - we start this one at Clyde and we call it ‘Rocking the Rox’. It is actually my wife Alexine’s and James favourite ride!

David, James and Ian were all so fabulous and helpful. Their bikes, guidance, and care were outstanding. Highly recommend NZbiketrails. Family of four - 14yo n 10yo. Bikes were great and the ride was spectacular. Ride was doable for whole family, even the unfit members thanks to the great electric bikes. The electric bikes made the experience so much more enjoyable to take in the views and track. Also recommend stopping at Carrick Winery. Great pizza and cookies- and friendly staff. The team at NZbiketrails made this a highlight of our NZ trip! Highly highly recommend as a must do experience in NZ.

Thank you for the review.
We recommend E-bikes on all of our trails. It just keeps the groups together, guests aren’t waiting for each other and makes it more about the experience.
It’s great that the family enjoyed it so much. The team are always humbled when we are one of ‘the highlights of the trip’ - thank you.
We don’t often take 10 year olds on the Dunstan Trail (we advertise from 12+) but will always make exceptions for confident and active riders using an e-bike. This is such a great family experience and we will get everyone comfortable with the bikes before they start.
Carrick Winery is also our favourite stop on the ride - Great food, great service and good value.
Next time you are in the area let’s do the Roxburgh Trail or the Wanaka Traisl. If you loved Dunstan you will love ‘Rocking the Rox’ with us (includes a jet-boat part way down). The Wanaka ride is a very scenic ride along the river trails - the family will love both of them.

The bike trail was awesome, a couple of challenging parts but once you get used to the bike you would have no problem getting through it. Carrick winery & restaurant to mark your first stop with great coffee and views 🤩 David was such a great host and made sure we were well prepared for the ride, and even treated us to a fact-filled shuttle ride back to our cars. Definitely will book in with these guys again for another bike trail 😎

Nothing better than a coffee and a scone at Carrick Winery. Combined with great food options in Clyde when you arrive you are set up for a great biking day……coffee, snacks and cakes!
If you enjoyed this trail you will love the Roxburgh Gorge with a jet-boat transfer. nzbiketrails runs that one daily as well.

My husband and I had wanted to ride the trail for a long time. We had a wonderful experience and David @nzbiketrails made sure our bikes were set up for us, that we had everything we needed, including some lovely pumpkin soup as it was a cold morning!
The scenery and the trail engineering are both amazing but ending the ride at Carrick Winery is perfection!

This was such a fun experience. We had our 11 year old son with us and he just zipped long so easily. Weather was not great in the morning so we were taken to Clyde to start and that was the best call as we missed most of the rain and had a tail wind. David was fantastic with local knowledge on the drive down and was waiting for us when we arrived back. The bikes were in fabulous condition -this is a must do activity if you're in the area.

At nzbiketrails we pride ourselves on ensuring that we do the right thing for our guests to make their rides better. On this day the wind was in the opposite direction to normal and just by holding back for 20 mins we could miss the rain.
It was great to see your son have so much fun on one of our new Sinch 26” kids ebikes. He rode brilliantly that day.

David provided us with a great experience and was very flexible. He had helpful suggestions about the direction to ride the Dunstan trail, refreshment stops, etc. At the last moment he set one of us up with an e-bike to explore the Cromwell trails and Bannockburn.

After a great experience completing the lake hawea trail with nzbiketours, we were excited to try the Dunstan trail which lived up to expectations! From the get go we were given so much useful information by David on route to the drop off point. He even provided each of us with some yummy homemade soup to enjoy along the way! Amazing views along the 40km trail, stopping off at Carrick winery for a well deserved pizza! Highly recommend!

Carrick Winery is such a great stop on the Dunstan Trail - Great views, a friendly team, heated greenhouse to sit in during Winter riding and great value food. We love it!

Have been wanting to do this trail since it opened - then realised it was an easy day trip as a break from the ski slopes. Amazing scenery, interesting and varied trail. great bikes and first class service from Dan. Great pizza and wine on route at Carrick.

The views were amazing! We took so many videos. The personalised touch by David made the experience more enjoyable such as the home made soup and Reggie the Dachshund! David was a great story teller and knew so much about the place which was interesting. Bikes were great and easy to use. The winery was a lovely place for lunch too. A must do if you are in Wanaka, Cromwell, Clyde or surrounding areas.
