We had an amazing day biking, hiking, and horseback riding! It was such an incredible way to see more of the area than we would have with a car or shuttle. The ebikes helped make the ride manageable and we could make it as hard or easy as we wanted! Our guide made sure we were riding safely and he pointed out lots of cool animals. The hike blew us away with its beauty and it felt like we were the only ones there. The delicous lunch afterwards was a bonus! I would highly recommend this adventure if you want to see the area in a unique way!

I did not get to go on a ride as it was cancelled 2h prior to it. This is very frustrating as you make plans accordingly and they waited until 2 hours before to cancel because they needed only one extra person which makes it even more frustrating. Very irresponsible.

Hello and thank you for your review. We understand your frustration about haven't get your ride. However, cancelling is an option every operator has, and doing it makes the operator responsible. Irresponsible is not cancelling and making clients wait or get to the place and not receiving the service. We, as more of the operators, have a minimum amount of people to operate tours for many reasons, and I am pretty sure we messaged you offering apologies and giving you the option of moving you to another tour. We are very sorry to know you feel frustrated, but how can you review an activity with 1 out of 5 stars if you didn't take it?

Let me start by saying that all-in-all this was a great experience overall...but I think would have been better if we'd been better prepared by a more detailed description of what to expect and the plan/itinerary and how physically demanding this would be. I almost gave this review 4 stars because of that, but noticed that since our tour it looks like the page has been updated a lil bit...so, bumped this back up to 5 stars.
Here's what I'll say about this tour - it's mostly do-it-yourself for a majority of the way, but you have a guide there to watch out for you on the mountain biking portions and the horseback ride. Another thing: this is a physically challenging day. A very physically challenging day...especially if you're NOT an experienced mountain biker (or e-biker, or hiker)...like us. lol. We are in decent shape...not the best, not the worst, but we did get a butt-kicking workout!
Again, though, I think if we'd had a more detailed itinerary ahead of time and more detail of what to expect, we'd have been better mentally prepared for the day and it would have taken at least a bunch of the mental challenge out of it. We did the El Tigre by Bike tour.
So, here's what to expect:
-Morning pickup at your hotel
-Drive to the mountain biking start point (it ended up being just my friend and I + the guide, so essentially a private tour).
-The guide fits you to the bike, gives instructions and sets you up with safety equipment, etc. **Special should out to our guide, Roy, here. My friend and I (both female) are pretty short - about 5'3. Roy went above and beyond to make sure we could fit safely on the bikes...which literally required sawing off portions of the saddle pole to do so since the bikes are pretty tall. He 100% didn't have to do that, but the fact that he did to ensure we were riding comfortably and at the safe/appropriate height was very much appreciated. SO, let that be a note to anyone under about 5'5...any shorter than that will have that same difficulty with this.
-You start with a 12km ride on mostly gravel-roads/trails all up and downhill...very little flat. They don't call it Monteverde for no reason, lol. That in and of itself was challenging with no MTB experience. We literally would not have made it up the hills without the e-bike assist.
-Arrive at the start of the El Tigre Waterfalls hike
-The guide leaves you at this point and you do the hike on your own
-The folks at the trail head explain the route. It's about 5 miles; there's a 1500 ft altitude change from the top to the bottom of the canyon, then back up. There are 4 waterfalls, and they point out where to start, where to borrow walking sticks (TAKE THEM...trust me), etc.
-The hike itself: it's beautiful and the scenery is 100% worth it, but just note this is not a beginner or even "moderate" hike by any means. It's difficult. Even with it being somewhat overcast and not super hot, it was still quite humid, and the hike is physically demanding. Take plenty of water, use good hiking shoes and I'd recommend lightweight hiking pants vs shorts. That said, the path/trail is clearly marked, and while it's quite rocky throughout and slippery in parts, steep in parts, etc, seeing the waterfalls and the nature in general is 100% worth it.
-About 3/4 of the way through the hike you radio to the horses or jeep (whichever mode your tour includes...ours was horses) so they know you're getting close and they prep for you to arrive
-We got onto our horses and rode for about 30 min back uphill to the office/restaurant where the hike started...I've never been more grateful to be on a horse in my life. The hill back up is long and very steep!
-Lunch after that (which you feel like you've physically earned at that point after the bikes and the hike)...and the views over Monteverde from the restaurant are spectacular!
-BUT, prep yourself...after lunch, you RIDE BACK THE WAY YOU CAME. So, yes, 12km more...after doing all of the above, up and down the same hills you started on. I didn't think I was going to make it because we were physically exhausted at that point, but we did make it, and I'm glad we did it!
One more shout out to our guide, Roy. My friend chose to get really far ahead of us at one point on the ride back and took a wrong turn...which, we didn't realize until we got back to the end/start point and she wasn't there. Roy and his cousin (Luis, I believe...who operates the tour company) were rockstars, though! They were patient, helpful in tracking down where she was, and Roy went back out a few more km on the bike to get her and bring her back...even after the 25km we'd already done. Thank you, Roy, for going above and beyond!

The ride was an amazing rush. I do recommend you be the most comfortable to do this activity. My wife ended up not doing the ride due to not feeling comfortable with the height of the bike. The instructor did adjust her seat however due to her shortness she still had difficulty reaching the ground. The instructors were great and very patient in teaching the mechanics of the bike. The tour itself was amazing and rush of adrenaline. I would compare the experience similar to mountain biking. The views were scenic and peaceful while we sat and enjoyed a bottle of wine with conversation with fellow riders.

Great ride and the weather held for us even if there was no view at the highest point. Jared was a great host and was very patient when a couple of sections were simply too steep for some of our party.

Me and my boyfriend did this and we are not very experienced mountain bikers! But it was so so so much fun! Total work out and I did fall twice but it was so worth it. One thing I would definitely recommend is to dress appropriately. We just went in July which is the raining season and we were covered in mud by the end of it and a bit cold! But I would still recommend this any time of year! We did the sunset Tour and although we didn't see the sunset, it was actually pretty cool! All you could see were clouds it was so trippy! The tour guides were so nice and we actually became friends with them afterwards. We got tons of beautiful pictures and there was even someone on a bike taking pictures and videos of us as well! I would definitely recommend this.

My first visit to Monteverde was more than 20 years ago. Since then, I have visited at least a handful of times and have probably been on every tour in the area. I have done 2 tours with Two Wheels Adventure and the cool thing is that both were amazing, yet VERY different. One was their sunset adventure, which is tame and very fun. More recently, they crafted a longer, more advanced ride for me and a group of friends. We all have experience riding off the road and I have to say that it was AMAZING. Their guides are passionate and professional. You definitely feel that safety is the top priority. An important note is that this a cloud forest, so you won’t always get the amazing views of the volcano and the lake. But the scenery will always be very beautiful.

I booked this tour for my cycling loving husband, and the idea of riding an e-bike didn’t sound awful to my non cycling loving self. First and foremost Carlos is so much fun. Not only is he super personable, and a great photographer, but he is also super patient if you are someone who struggles with biking. The ride did have some steep hills but nothing unbearable. Just believe in yourself and take guidance from Carlos. The halfway point/ view is incredible. Honestly the pictures don’t do it justice. Probably one of the best sunsets I’ve seen in a while. And of course Carlos made sure we got great pictures and videos both from the top views and while riding. So book this tour! It was great!

Although I am a competent mountain biker my partner hasn’t done mountain biking only biking on the road - would you recommend a certain tour from your options (breakfast, day or sunset) or would you suggest that mountain biking experience is essential? Thank you Charlie
