We spent several hours here and it was well worth the time. There were no guided tours available at the time of our visit, so we opted for the self-guided tour. There were lots of information boards around helping to explain how the prison has changed over time. Although the were several school parties at the time of our visit, this did not distract from our visit as the prison is so large and rambling. Very atmospheric and fascinating to learn the history of the prison and the penal system in the UK. All the staff that we encountered were very friendly and welcoming.

This was a very interesting and informative visit at the prison.
We were given a map of the site and off we went around all the areas of the prison. At the cost of £15 each was great value for money and we spent about 3 hours wandering around.
Lots of walking and climbing up and down stairs led to feeling very tired with painful joints afterwards.
We all really enjoyed this place

Fabulous day out with kids. Fascinating 400 years of history. Added bonus of spooky climate and ghost stories. My kids want to go back to prison!

During a moment of madness, my husband and I booked the Ghost hunting experience last friday evening. Overall it was one of a kind; being alone in a haunted prison at 1am isn't for the faint hearted. However, in terms of 'paranormal activity' there was minimal .. and some things I can't help but feel were 'helped along' by the staff (who were very pleasant btw) - things such as the torch turning on and off.
During the evening, the staff started to refer to one spirit as 'Bob' and this took the seriousness away from it; it all became a bit of a laugh and a joke when they were calling for Bob and using cat balls to call Bob into action. It did make me wonder if it was all a wind up. I also ask why the staff were seeking the spirit of the governor when the governor didn't die in the prison (?) but anyhow it was a fun night and very very different indeed.
The prison itself is exceptional and I would encourage everyone to go and do a self tour at the minimum to go and see an authentic prison. It definitely has that very eerie feel and will give you goosebumps!!

Thank you for joining us for the Ghost Hunting Experience and sharing your thoughts! We're so glad you and your husband enjoyed the eerie atmosphere of the prison — it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind experience. While we do our best to create an engaging and immersive evening, we never artificially create results, so inevitably, some nights will be quieter than others. As for Bob, he’s a regular spirit often encountered at the prison. It’s wonderful to hear you found the prison exceptional — it really does have that goosebump-inducing charm! We’d love to see you back for another fun activity soon!

We had a great evening. 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Something we all enjoyed and Enjoyed Ester the tour guide was amazing and really made it such an enjoyable being. Looking forward now to an overnight stay😱

Went here for a birthday treat. What a treat it was!
I loved the place; it was so interesting and creepy! Right up my street!
Didn't see any spooks, but I did feel very uncomfortable in A Wing.
I'd really like to return for a guided tour next time.

We took the guided tour. There was only myself and my wife. Jason was very informative with a great sense of humour. It makes you think twice regarding capital punishment!

We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the self guided tour. However, the prison itself and in particular outdoor areas could do with a general tidy up- weeds, dirty carpeted areas, the smell of urine- I appreciate this is an old building but these issues could be addressed.
Signage was also quite poor.
The reception/cafe/shop arrangement is also confusing as to what bit is what.
We are glad we did this experience as we live locally and it was purchased as a gift for a birthday.

We truly appreciate your feedback about the outdoor areas and signage. Keeping an old building in top shape is always a bit of a challenge, but your comments have been noted, and we’ll definitely look into giving the place a bit of TLC (especially tackling those pesky weeds and improving the signage).
You’re absolutely right about the reception, café, and shop layout — the prison was, of course, never designed to accommodate these kinds of facilities, so we’ve made the best use of the space available for now. That said, we have some exciting plans to improve the flow and make things clearer in the future — so watch this space!

Great tour in a wonderfully historic venue. Able to mill around at our own pace. Good fun and lots to learn about. Definitely some creepy sections which always add to the fun.
