Our tour was from a cruise ship and was fabulous. Early in the day and without crowds as you would find at Pompeii. It was a resort village, populated with only a few slaves and caretakers when hit by a pyroclastic flow that covered the town to a depth of six meters, preserving it. Wonderful mosaics, frescoes and statues. Photographers will enjoy the subjects of buildings, streets, art, and houses. Do not suggest a tripod, my DSLR with a zoom lens was all I needed. Some rooms are dark, so anticipate using a high ISO. Take shots from the rim above before walking through the tunnel to be in the village. Then you will use the wide-angle a lot.

I've always wanted to visit Herculaneum and the tour I took last Friday with Askos did not disappoint. Our guide, Michele, was simply brilliant: informed and knowledgeable and always interesting and engaged - our just over 2-hour tour simply sped by. It is an amazing place and I would strongly recommend a visit, and with this guide.

Italo was such a wonderful guide. I would recommend him to anyone. He was knowledgeable, informative, he always made sure he was not going too fast for me. Italo was waiting for me when I arrived and made sure my transport was there when I left. Definately bring a camera and try to learn a little Italian, just courtesy stuff, It will make your tour more enjoyable. My bad Italian gave us many laughs. Shoes are important, you will be on your feet all the time. Good sneekers or walking shoes are a must. This is a must see destination, you will never see anything likeit again. Be prepared to cry. Thank you Italo for a great experience !

Luciano Leone was the most passionate tour guide we met in Italy. Not to say the others were not, the tours guides we had were all excellent and really live and breath the subjects they talk about. Luciano was an on site archilogist who filled the tour with as many interesting facts and knowledge of Ercalano and Pompeii as he could in the time available. I could have spent the whole day with him listening to his fascinating descriptions of how life was for the people of this unique ancient city. Highly recommended. Thank you very much for a wonderful day.

Italo was a great host/guide who took our little group of two couples on a personalised tour of all the key locations of Herculaneum. His years of experience gave us great insights into ancient life; he compared and contrasted with Pompei in a very helpful way; was friendly and able to answer every question. Top quality.

Rosanna was our private tour guide and she was magnificent! We learned so much from her and she was also a good listener to us. She took her time with us and answered every question perfectly. Her English was amazing and you can feel her passion for the area.

Above, I have stated that we bought the "Skip the Line Ancient Herculaneum Small Group Walking Tour with Top Rated Guide". I could not find an item on the drop down menu without a guide. We walked around at our own pace.
After having seen Pompeii last time we were in Italy, this time it was Herculaneum.
The site is interesting and much smaller and easier to navigate than Pompeii. We took a fast train from Rome to Naples, then a local train to Herculaneum.
The walk to the site was long and hot with no taxis or buses around.
We had pre-purchased skip the line tickets which cost double the admission price. As it turned out this was a waste of money. We arrived at 10am to find the skip the line counter was closed and there were only a few people in front of us.
We were there for about two hours and there were no crowds. I would not recommend the skip the line tickets for this attraction.
Having said that, it was enjoyable.

In visiting the Naples area last month I did a guided tour of the Herculaneum Archaeological Site. Having been to Pompeii several times I wanted to see the difference and compare the two. Though smaller, I think there was just as much to see at Herculaneum as Pompeii. They both should be seen because they are in fact quite different. Herculaneum is better preserved and they have an on sight air conditioned museum with interesting artifacts including beautiful frescos. Perhaps the most interesting sight was the boat docks where they found hundreds of skeletons where people had tried to find safety at the waters edge but to no avail. Only a small portion of the sight has been developed, with no plans of going forward because of existing dwellings covering the sight. There are more frescos here on display and many are quite well preserved. The tour takes about an hour and a half and is well worth it. They also have a very nice gift shop.

Thank you so so much for a wonderful tour of Herculaneum! Livio was a fantastic tour guide who had a marvellous sense of humour and knew so much and delivered plenty. Livio, Greta and the company have excellent communication skills especially if you’re running late from navigating the circumvesuvania! I highly recommend joining this tour. You won’t regret it!

We had a fabulous guided tour with Mr Leone, the archaeologist. He was so knowledgeable and the tour was a highlight of our holiday. He was so lovely with our daughter Natasha and we wanted to say thank you to him, and good luck with further excavations!
