Curious about Željava, we searched for information and found Plitvice here on Tripadvisor.
Our guide was Antonio, a local who knows a lot about the history.
Antonio guided us inside the whole base and explained to us about the base parts and history.
You can visit the base by yourself, just walking around, but for sure you will be lost and also lose the history.

Super cool experience to do. Bizarre and interesting place. With guide Antonio the story really comes to life. In terms of cycling / effort very doable, small children / mountain bikes also available. Good stuff. Departure is from hotel Lyra and from there it is a short bike ride and you cycle over the runway and then into the mountain.. along the way you dismount a few times to see a few spaces. We were early in the morning, in terms of heat still doable; in the tunnels it is nice and chilly.

I booked the Top Secret Plitvice Lakes e-bike tour and Hrvoje the owner was our guide. Hands down probably the best tour of my life. I cannot say enough good things about this experience.
Do your self a favor and book this tour. You will get to see and experience much more than you would in the park and away from all the crowds. We weee able to see 12 out of the 16 lakes in 4 hours! The experience ended at a local restaurant for lunch, which was delicious.
Learned a lot about the history of the area. The tour is for all fitness levels which is nice. I hope to be back one day to experience again. Thank you Hrvoje 🙏😊

Private tour and pick-up from the hotel. Young, friendly guide. Very interesting and educational. Good storyteller. Interesting about what was possible underground in the neighboring country in the 90s!

I cannot reccomend this tour highly enough. It is an amazing place! I loved every minute of exploring the tunnels and runways, Antonio is an excellent guide, really knowledgeable about the place and happy to answer our many questions. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon!

An unforgettable experience...the four of us, alone with our guide, set out to discover this old underground base, in the dark, armed with our flashlights...an unusual visit, which is worth the detour! Our very friendly guide gave us all the explanations during the tour...

My eldest son regularly visits abandoned complexes and he thought it would be great to visit the underground air base in Zeljava. Fortunately, we booked this tour, because with a guide you not only get so much more information, but you also see all the places you would never dare to visit yourself. Our guide Antonio was very knowledgeable, with humor and also told a lot about the war in this region from his own experience as a child. Make sure you wear old shoes and bring warm clothes, because you will be exploring the full 3.5 kilometers.

Fascinating place, still uncontaminated by too much tourism, fortunately, with batteries we entered to see up to a first stretch, you definitely have to pay attention to the debris on the ground

One of the more interesting cool things we did in all of Europe. It is very off the beaten path, and definitely for the more adventuresome type. Our guide was so educated, and had so many stories to tell. I would advise that you wear warm clothing and good shoes as it is important to have good footing. So amazing!

If this place was in a movie no one would believe it….a Bond level underground lair. Well worth visit for insight into local history from Cold War period on. Real pity place though that the site is not being preserved and managed actively.
