Superb two days. Information and enthusiasm from Antony (Kapiti guide) and Wayne (Lodge partner/owner) was excellent. Food was good and plentiful. Staff great.
Kaka's are so tame even landing on shoulders, aye Jim lad.
Seeing a Kiwi took me until 1am, but the other group saw them after an hour.

Our overnight trip was a unique experience and one of the highlights of our NZ trip. The introduction and guided walk with Dave was a great start and the time at the Lodge was very worthwhile, with excellent food and comfortable beds in our cabin. We saw blue penguins on the evening walk, and a small flock of spoonbills the following morning.
We were lucky enough to see a kiwi on the night walk - something we will never forget.

This is an amazing tour that we can't recommend enough. We are very grateful to our hosts Pania, Manaaki and Pikitia. Manaaki cooked us the most delicious meals and catered to our dietary needs, no problem. Our favourite was his kūmara and coconut soup. Pikitia set up our rooms beautifully and they were very clean. It was amazing waking up to views of the hills, ocean and all of the native birds. We had Takahē walking just outside our room and the birdsong was beautiful. Pania was very knowledgable and gave us the history of the island including her whānau history. She could explain all the conservation efforts and answered all of our questions. Pania went above and beyond for us, helping us bless our Dad's pounmau. She also took us out for a night time kiwi tour. She identified all the bird calls and found us a wee kiwi we would've walked right by. It chased a weka onto the path right in front of us. Pania showed us areas of importance to her whānau and was very patient and kind with my youngest brother who has autism. The next morning my Mum was unwell and Pania and Manaaki acted quickly and with so much care to help us get off the island safely. The skippers were very caring too and made our ride back to New Zealand quick and comfortable. Despite the unfortunate end to our stay we are so thankful to Kapiti Island Nature Tours and we can't wait to come back and finish our tour.

Staying over at Waiorua was the highlight of our Kapiti Island visit. After a guided tour by our wonderfully knowledgeable guide we climbed to the top of Rangatira, stopping to eat our delicious packed lunch. I must admit the climb challenged my 72 year old body but Oh so well worth it.
But the icing on the cake was the welcome we had at the northern end of the island - great accommodation, food and bird life. I had a little doze before dinner, falling asleep watching kereru eating on a branch and waking to the same view without the bird! Such a treat. We did get to see a bit of a kiwi on our night walk. Would have liked to see more but hey.... Next morning we just roamed around, taking in more birdlife and the peace of the island before our rather tumultuous ride back to the mainland. It was pretty rough but we felt safe enough. overall a wonderful experience.

A truly amazing experience! We had such a wonderful time from start to finish.
The accommodation, food and hospitality were second to none.
Great hikes in wonderful surroundings and we were lucky enough to see a kiwi and penguin on our night walk.
Would thoroughly recommend.

We had a wonderful day exploring Kapiti Island and then amazing night glamping. The walks were great and the views amazing. It was great hearing the history of the island and trying to spot the many wild life as we walk around. The guides were well informed and very helpful and informative.
Overall a fantastic experience that we will recommend to other people.

An amazing experience. Not only were the walks beautiful, the glamping accommodation, catering and staff where perfect.

The walks were amazing. We stayed in a Glamping tent and were very lucky to encounter a kiwi foraging for food! Great food and hospitality! Looking forward to returning

Great experience, so rewarding! It's only a quick but fun boat ride over and Kapiti is a gorgeous island with an instant holiday vibe. Our guide was very knowledgable and great at mimicing bird's calls. We're not birdwatching people, but it was a lot of fun recognise their calls and trying to spot them and snap a photograph. We particularly enjoyed observing a Kākā expertly prying open a backpack! At the first stop, we enjoyed a challenging uphill track to summit the island and a leisurely stroll across the beach. We were picked up by boat and dropped off like 10 minutes further up the coast and amazed by how different the forest is here. The food was DELICIOUS - and I'm a fussy eater so that says something - and the people very friendly and knowledgable all around. We felt so welcome. And all that was before we got very lucky in the evening to see a penguin waddle off, a ruru fly by, and a kiwi pass us at very close range on his way from one bush to the next. I knew would like it, but didn't think I would love it this much! Definitely recommend it to everyone!

This is a difficult review for me because the good is fabulous and the okay has much potential. What we loved: 1. the boat push off from the beach and cruise over fun and beautiful views. 2. The bird life especially on the lower trail. 3. Extremely friendly staff throughout the experience. 4. Feeling of relaxation at the camp. 5. Wine and cheese happy hour great and food overall very good. The potential: 1. Time change with no alert 2. Four of us signed up for a tour. The guide asked us what we wanted to see. How was there not a a naturalist ready to show us the island? I said birds and a very nice person but not an ornithologist or nature guide led us around for a bit and left us to hike or occupy ourselves until 3. IMO far too long as most people were waiting for the boat way ahead of the scheduled pick- up. It’s not that big an island with only a few designated paths. 4. The overnight cabin I reserved was 4 bunk beds and that was it - barely any space and very rustic. I certainly didn’t expect luxury but for the price paid expected more than a tiny space. 5. The common area was for family use as well and sometimes I felt I was intruding. 6. Lots of signs for private property everywhere as many family members live in the area. 7. Kiwi hunt. Yes it’s nature and not guaranteed but I tired of “it’s not a competition “ especially when the other group of 6 saw one and our group tromped around a very small patch of area with no success. Sets up for an awkward breakfast the next morning. Maybe offer just one group hike or an early morning look for anyone who would like a second chance.
I really liked the people so I dislike doing tough reviews; however, this is not a cheap activity and I don’t feel like I received what I thought I was paying to experience. Really the only okay experience we had in New Zealand

Hi Linda, As you stayed two nights, you must have heard the Dawn Chorus - was it a “proper” Dawn Chorus? I mean really loud and overwhelming? Here in SE England, I get up for it in early May to hopefully hear it, but it is always a disappointment. But in the Cevennes Mountains in SW France, you really do hear it.

We only stayed ine night at The Lodge on Kapiti Island and the one morning we woke to wind and a very dull morning so no dawn chorus. Tge number of birds flitting around early morning werent as plentiful as the previous evening.
