Seen from Vienna, behind the Semmering at the end of the Semmering mountain route, the Southern Railway Museum is housed in two former locomotive halls next to Mürzzuschlag station. The exhibition in the first hall begins with the cultural and economic history of the railway in Europe. Then the focus is on the Semmering Railway and its builder Karl Ritter v. Ghega, as well as other pioneers from the early days of the railway. A lot of space is deliberately devoted to the UNESCO World Heritage Semmering Railway. The further course of the Southern Railway main line through Styria via Graz and present-day Slovenia and on to the port city of Trieste in Italy is somewhat neglected for me. Interesting is a kind of petition from the Imperial and Royal Minister of Trade from 1908, in which he asks the General Director of the Southern Railway Company for a reduction in the freight rate for American cotton. In the basement under the hall, the train accident in Langenwang (neighboring municipality of Mürzzuschlag) in 1951 is commemorated, among other things.
While this exhibition looks at the entire railway system and is by no means only of interest to "buffer kissers", they will probably get their money's worth with the vehicle collection in the second hall. The world's largest collection of trolleys and small vehicles, including rail bicycles, rail-compatible automobiles from cars to heavy tractors and of course all types of motor trolleys. There are also some interesting locomotives. These include the steam locomotive "Gmunden", built in 1854 for the extension of the Linz-Budweis horse-drawn railway to Gmunden, the Imperial and Royal State Railways locomotive 180.01, a Swiss crocodile that got lost in Mürzzuschlag and a model of the 1042, which was omnipresent on the electrified railway lines in Austria from the mid-1960s to the beginning of the 21st century.
The thematic exhibition in the first hall is excellently designed. My only impression is that it is not well looked after and maintained and therefore signs of wear are clearly noticeable. The most stylish way to reach the museum from Vienna is by train via the Semmering.
Since June 11, 2021, after an interruption of almost 60 years, there has been a direct train connection from Vienna to Trieste via the classic Southern Railway line.

A modern museum-like history of the Southern Railway World Heritage Site, which provides comprehensive information from the initial planning through the long construction phases to the successful operation for more than a hundred years and a large number of historical objects from the history of rail that will make every railway enthusiast's heart beat faster.

First hall shows how the Semmering train line was built in the 1840s, with old construction, suverying and communications equipment, photos and recreations of how travelling would have been when the railway first opened.
Second hall is a five minute walk down the driveway and has all kinds of historic trains.
Behind the second hall is a lookout tower for viewing the construction of the new railway tunnel, that cuts out the climb over the Semmering Pass.

An interesting museum about the history of the Semmering railway, which is its self a UNESCO world heratige site. It contains a number of steam and electric locomotives as well as drasines.The museum is housed in the old loco sheds and is easily accessablle from the station. If making the trip by train from Vienna make sure to sit on the left hand side of the carrage facing the direction of travel for the best views after Gloggnitz.The nearby town is quite pretty and worth a stroll.

Sory to say this but for my family we where very disappointed because we went on the 28 nov 2018 and the museum was closed. The trip from vienna on the train was nice with grate vews
