Would there be any issues with doing the walk in reverse? I want to go from Tokyo and then to Kyoto after the walk, so it makes more sense to start in Narai.

Can anyone recommend a (data?)sim card for an android phone for Magome to Matsumoto and Tokyo? Where do you pick them up - Narita airport or Tokyo hotel?
We rented a wifi modem from Japan Wireless for our whole trip. We ordered online and it was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived. Unlimited data and multiple users!!

How well (or not) it is this trail marked? What did you use to navigate?
Trail was very easy to follow from Magano and maps are available locally but those are more use for pointing out things to see as trail is obvious.

We are planning to do this walk in late March. We want to do a part of the hike and spend one night on the trail. We will be coming from Tokyo. I have a few questions:
1. Is it possible to come from Tokyo and then go onto Kyoto whilst including a hike and overnight stay? (i.e. avoid going down to Kyoto and coming back up to do the hike)
2. What is the quickest way from Tokyo to part of the trail? We can then walk the next day.
3. What do we do with our luggage if coming form Tokyo (I've heard of the luggage transfer but it seems to only go from Magome and Tsumago, are there others)?
Any help on how to do some of this trail as a one night trip from Tokyo, going on to Kyoto would be appreciated!
Thanks

Hi. travel by train from Tokyo to Tsumago as with one night only you will then need to walk from Tsumago to Magome for the overnight stay. The next day you can go from Magome to Kyoto by bus, local train then bullet train.
Send luggage from Tokyo onto Kyoto, approx $20 per case. You will not want it on walk!

Hi I'm thinking to station myself at magome for 2 nights. So i will just do the magome to tsumago hike then bus or train back to magome. The bag forwarding seems a bit complicated to me and I'm traveling solo. Usually I don't carry a lot of luggage but i figured there are a lot of nice snacks to buy in Japan... So I will need a cabin size bag at least...
Is this do-able. Just 2 night in magome...

Hi, bus is easy but luggage transfer is not hard. You just have to be at the tourist info centre by 11, pay $5 per bag then do the walk. Your bag will be ready when you get to Tsumago in the afternoon. The tourist office in Magome is actually at the start of the walk.
By the way, we thought Tsumago was quieter and prettier than Magome.

HI,
To get into the spirit of walking on a pilgrimage route, which will be the best starting point for a journey of 5 days? I will start the journey from Haneda Airport.
Thank you!

Hello,
I would recommend starting in Nakatsugawa. It is about 8k to Mogame and same to Tsumago, which is 16k for the day with many beautiful trails. Then do 17k to Nojiri, with a huge climb over the Nenouetoge pass. Then get a train to Kiso-fukushima. Next day get train to Yabuhara then walk 8k to Narai, including going over the Toriitoge pass, another big climb but well worth it. End in Narai. Enjoy!

I intend to do the Magome to Tsumago hike in early April.
I will be travelling with my parents who are in their early 60, not exactly fit but no issue with mobility.
1. Will the temperature be too cold in April for the walk?
2. Is the path slippery, with ice?
3. Is the uphill at Magome, really steep?
Thank you for the advice.
I can imagine in the covered sheltered areas it might be slippery but good shoes should make this easier. Take some walking sticks or pick up one along the way, we found a garden shortly outside of magma whit a big tub of sticks offering them for use. Don't give the sticks up until you compete the ascent into Tsumago.
If they find the route too testing, about halfway you cross a road and their is a bus stop near it, they could take the bus back!. It is a great route and worth trying

Has anyone used Okujapan service? Appreciate if you can share your experience and if guides are really neede? What are the pros to have guides along the tour? Thank you!!
We used OKU for the Kumano Kodo-I highly recommend them as it is near impossible to acquire accomodations without local help. Do the Nakasendo on your own just watch lots of YouTube and read the blogs-no guide needed.
