Summer is tough at ski resorts, but they're trying. The small village at Taos Ski Valley doesn't have a lot open in the off season, and at times it seemed a little lonely. Some things like the pool are closed when the rain comes through every afternoon (which they adorably call "monsoon season"). It's because of the possibility of lightning, so I appreciate their caution, but you need to be flexible about activities and not just think you can do whatever you want when you want. Just about everything closes by 5:00, so bring a book. The staff at the Blake (as far as I know, it's the only hotel here, the rest appear to be condos) is great and super helpful, though I wish they had some maps to hand out with the village layout and nearby hiking trails. You just have to explore and figure it out on your own. The restaurant at the hotel, 192, was fine, but it was the only option much of our stay, and it can't really sustain you for more than a few meals (terrible coffee; every server was lovely). I can't say what it's like in ski season, but we enjoyed a few days here in summer. Two to three nights is probably the right amount. Before you book, call to ask what restaurants and other things will be open your days. It probably will make a difference in your expectations.

Overall really cool place not very crowded with lots of good long runs. Not recommend for beginners as their greens were more like blues.
It’s expensive so buy earlier if you can ideally 72 hours prior or the yearly ski pass. We did not take lessons but their instructors seem very good.

Taos Ski valley has been a place my family and I have gone to for 25 years. It’s incredible to see the changes, but this is only the beginning. If you want to avoid a hoity-toity ski trip, this is the place. Very legitimate skiing, and a very nice quaint village to enjoy once you are done. The valley is growing tremendously, and I can’t wait to see what it will be in the next few years! By the way, the Edelweiss is amazing!!

We came here in February 2024 for our annual family ski trip where we choose a new resort to visit every year. This year we decided on Taos as we wanted some sun, and that was what we got! The snow cover unfortunately was pretty thin as there is kind of a drought in NM right now, some rocks and grass sticking out of the snow that you had to avoid. Resort Staff was very welcoming and friendly. The ski school was fine except for the check in procedure where one person was working at the desk with a line at least 10 families deep. Lots of double black diamonds and good blue intermediate runs. Not a lot in between. I could see this being a pretty epic place with more snow! The runs were either well groomed or not at all! We also enjoyed all the other activities such as sledding, ice skating, shopping, and the restaurants. We stayed midweek in February 21-24th.

Beautiful mountain but the lift tickets prices are ridiculously high. $195 for an adult tickets is just too much. Please consider an in state discount. Raising prices for significantly for holiday weekends will definitely deter us from coming back.
Also food options are limited and $$.

Great skiing and friendly people. Was so nice to escape the typical ski crowds at other large resorts in February. The altitude however is no joke.

I booked two days of snowboarding lessons at TSV, which included rentals. On the first day, I picked up my equipment at the TSV rental shop. Upon reaching the slope, my instructor noticed immediately that my board was much too short for my height, and that one of the bindings was nearly busted off. Indeed it broke within the hour. I had to get it exchanged during lunch. This was understandable, likely just due to one employee's oversight, but it still detracted from the effectiveness of my first day's lesson.
The next morning, the lace to my boot snapped as I was tightening it. The employee that I reported this to called over a person who I assume was his manager, who then claimed that the damage was my fault and I would be fined $100. He immediately took an aggressive and demeaning attitude.
He claimed that the only way this would have happened was if I neglected to unlock the boa when I removed the boot. I do not appreciate being treated like an idiot - clearly I know how to operate it because the other boot is intact. Based on the condition of the boots overall I am sure that the lace was already frayed and I was merely the unlucky customer to witness its last breath. Even if it were my fault, the boa repair certainly does not cost $100. However, he claimed that the boot would need to be replaced and it would cost upwards of $400, so he was already giving me a good deal. He claimed it could not be their fault because they do not hand out damaged equipment.
Eventually he agreed to reduce the fee to $25, which I accepted only because I was already 20 minutes late to my lesson at this point due to this ordeal. I paid the fine and was handed a new pair of boots by another employee. This pair also had a very obviously frayed lace. I refused to accept them unless they were able to note this preexisting damage, fearing being blamed again if it were to give up. Conveniently, the manager who claimed that they do not hand out damaged equipment had left the area by this time. For some reason, they were unable to add such a note and instead gave me yet another pair of boots. This time they appeared to be in acceptable condition so I was finally able to get to my lesson, 30 minutes late.
It is pretty clear to me what is happening here - the rental shop's management does not adequately oversee their restocking and inspection process, and thus damaged equipment can be lent out to unsuspecting customers. They probably let this slide because it allows them to run a racket in which they then blame those customers for breaking the equipment, through no fault of their own, and then collect fines. This would not be the case if they simply accepted that gear would eventually need to be repaired or decommissioned due to normal wear, and identified when it was time to do so.
I spoke to several instructors who assured me that mine is not the only case of the rental shop failing to fulfill their duties in this way. My lessons and those of many other customers were rendered ineffectual due to inconsistencies in gear and delays induced in getting replacements.
After finishing the morning session today, I went to the corporate office to lodge a complaint against the rental shop. It too was staffed with disinterested teenagers so I am not sure the feedback I left will result in any change.

195$ for a day use lift pass, no discount for locals... Price gouge much? Unfortunately this establishment is for tourists with money not locals to Taos

Although one of the higher priced ski resorts, the skiing at Taos Ski Valley cannot be rivaled. The slopes are all steep, even the greens, with plenty of space for people to spread out on the mountain.
We took advantage of the children’s ski school and on-site day care. Our young child skied for the first time and had so much fun in ski school he immediately wanted to go back. Book these well ahead of time - but the booking process was easy.
The resort is great, although a small, cozy feel - with everything you need at the bottom of the mountain for a great vacation.

Is there a place for kids to go sledding? If so is there a lift/conveyer for it?

What time does TSV ski rental at the base open and what time do lift ticket office and ski runs open? We are going Thanksgiving weekend and want to be there first thing!

Sorry, we were there for a summer visit. However, if you contact them directly, I'm sure they can help you.
Skiing in Taos is magical! Have fun--remember, you'll be at high altitudes, so keep hydrated!

We are planning a winter trip to the Taos Ski Valley, we're from Gulf Coast Texas, so we have little knowledge of the area. We'll be taking 3 kids, ages 8, 4, and 2. We're more interested in renting a vacation house rather than a hotel or condo. But my question is, which town is better for kids around these ages. I've read about some fun activities in Angelfire, but I'd like to get some more opinions. We'd basically like to be able to see some historical stuff, scenic stuff, eat good food, do some winter stuff, and some shopping. (If you've ever been to Fredericksburg, Tx, we'd love to know of some towns like that, with a main street lined with shops and restaurants) Any and all info is much appreciated!

Taos will probably beat out Angelfire on almost all of your criteria. We skied at Taos Ski Valley over Spring Break this year and rented a house. It was great. Taos has a famous ski school, which accommodates kids from toddler age (mostly day care and fun activities with a little time spent on the snow) through adulthood. There is also a place to ride inner tubes down the hill if you don't feel like skiing.
For cultural sightseeing, the Taos Pueblo is like stepping back in time, and the residents still live there without the use of electricity or indoor plumbing, as they have since the 1600's. Shopping in town is fun for all ages around the Plaza. Lots of t-shirts and toys for kids, as well as art galleries for adults. Good food is available all over Taos, and most are family friendly.
As the other contributors said, you can make an easy day trip to Anglfire and get the best of both places. I just think Taos offers more of everything you are looking for. Hope this helps.

Ask if you can ride the lift up and back down. Employees do it alll the time.

Can you tell me if you took a whole day or half a day lesson? I'm a decent skier but the mountain and comments from others is making me think I should go up the mountain with an instructor first.
撰写日期:2017年1月16日
None of us took lessons. I would suggest 1/2 day lessons if you are a decent skier, but that's just my opinion. I don't have patience to be tied to an instructor for the entire day.

Most years it's good at Taos. This year was great!
But it really depends on the year. Some years, the major snow comes early, or not at all, but Taos is relatively high elevation, so it's often better there than surrounding areas.

Haven't been skiing in a couple of years, so I can't recall. But if we don't ski, can we still get to the very top of the mountain? Is there a bar/cabin up there to enjoy a drink and the view?
Much appreciated.
撰写日期:2016年2月29日
Unfortuately not, unless you're willing to walk up the mountain (no one does). Getting to the top requires use of the ski-lift which you won't be allowed to use unless you have a lift-pass, purchased at the bottom of the mountain. There's nothing at the top, so it's not worth going unless you plan to ski down.
There are several nice resturants at the resort with views of the mountain. Still worth going.
