Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is part of the Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution, a collection of 11 locations across Japan. Last year, I visited Glover House and learned about Thomas Glover’s significant contributions to Japan’s steel industry. This year, my family took me to see the furnaces. The museum provided fascinating insights into how Hidetatsu Egawa, a brilliant local government official, spearheaded the project to bolster Japan’s national isolation policy. Although the United States eventually ended this policy and opened Japan to the world, the rapid development of cannons here is truly astonishing.
It’s a bit off the beaten path compared to other sightseeing spots, but it’s definitely a must-visit for history buffs or STEM enthusiasts like myself.
Adjacent to this complex is a charming shop. Be warned – it offers a delightful array of local products, including souvenir items, confectioneries, and micro-brews. I was tempted to buy an entire case of their mesmerizing beer collection.

We visited the museum the other day.
After spending a night in Mishima, we were suddenly drawn to the Love Live! train at Izu Hakone, so we decided to take a look around, but the idols at the museum took over the whole thing. Just by saying "Come here," they came running over at full speed.
For a couple who love making things, it was an extremely interesting structure. It was a shame that the location of the watermill and the waterway were not clear.
There was a display of hanging dolls, and there were doll decorations on the stairs, so it was quite charming.
The view of Mt. Fuji over the reflective furnace from the top of the tea fields was spectacular. Even though it was a Sunday, it was fairly empty, so it was a great place for sightseeing. I recommend it.

I go to Izu about twice a year, but this was my first visit → it was very close to where I was staying

I thought I'd seen it before, but as I approached, it was so impressive❗️
Amazing‼️Beautiful facility, with detailed explanations. It was a weekday, but as you'd expect from a World Heritage site, volunteers were explaining things to us.

Wow, I'm really in awe of all the people who came here in the past.
I took a little walk and was soothed by the surrounding scenery.
I recommend it.

It's been a while since I last visited, and I was surprised. I thought there was nothing there except the reverberatory furnace, but now there is a magnificent memorial hall. It seems that the impact of being registered as a World Heritage Site is very large. However, it was a very cold day, and there were hardly any tourists, so a volunteer who was willing to explain things to us was there and gave us a full explanation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him.

On my way to Numazu and Mishima, I visited the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace. It was a weekday, so there were about 100 cars and one bus from Ibaraki, and there were a lot of tourists. I went to the Hanging Dolls building, but unfortunately it was closed because it will be on display from December. I would like to return next year during strawberry picking season.

The reverberatory furnace was built at the end of the Edo period to make cannons. There were over a dozen in the country, but only three remain today, and of these, the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace is an extremely valuable historical heritage in that it remains almost completely intact and has been confirmed to have actually been in operation.
The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace was located on the outskirts of Izunokuni City, which can be considered the gateway to the Izu Peninsula. In front of the car park was the Guidance Center. It is possible to see just the reverberatory furnace, but I recommend learning about the history of the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace at the Guidance Center before seeing the real thing. Inside the museum, the historical background to the construction of the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace and relics are on display, and we were able to learn about the history of the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace through videos projected on a screen.

This metal smelting and casting factory, which was established in the middle of the 19th century for the purpose of making war cannons, is one of the centers that was built during the Meiji era and during the industrial development of Japan. This factory is registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the vicinity of this site, a small but very useful museum has been built. A number of different types of products produced in this factory have been exhibited. The area around this building, which is located next to the tea fields, left a very memorable sight in our minds with trees full of cherry blossoms. Beside the tea plantations, there is also a bamboo grove that is worth visiting. The entrance to this complex is 500 yen and it takes an hour to visit it.
