It looks so beautiful and is truly worthy of being called a famous castle in the Tokai region!
Kakegawa Castle was originally built by the Imagawa clan with the aim of advancing into Totomi, and is famous as the castle where Yamauchi Kazutoyo lived as the lord for 10 years during the Sengoku period.
I was able to see the exhibits inside the castle and look out over the city from the castle tower, so I was very satisfied with this wonderful castle!

This is a historic castle and grounds with a very nice view. Be ready to climb some steep and tall stairs. Affordable and informative. Bring you phone translation app as everything is in Japanese, but this is Japan after all. The tea was a fun thing as well.

This is a pretty castle and palace to visit. Both are included in the admission fee. Be aware there are a lot of steep steps up to and inside the castle itself. Shoes are expected to be removed before entering both buildings. Beautiful gardens nearby also. There was entertainment going on also in the gardens with ninjas having sword fights and getting children (and occasionally an adult, see photos) to come and have a go. Beautiful castle worth a visit.

It is difficult to walk both inside the newly built castle and on the stairs and roads outside.
It is easy to stumble and fall.
Perhaps because they have remained faithful to the original construction, the treads and risers are different from modern stairs and make it very difficult to walk on.
At Matsumoto Castle, I fell on my heel and my heel hurt for several months, but at Kakegawa Castle, my knee started hurting for the first time in a long time.
It is a very popular castle and there are a lot of people, so I wait for times when there is a lull in the flow of people to go up and down the stairs.
Considering it was rebuilt, it is well built, but elderly people should watch their step!

During the Muromachi period, the Imagawa clan, the lord of Suruga, aimed to advance into Totomi and ordered their vassal, the Asahina clan, to build a castle, which marked the beginning of Kakegawa Castle.
During the Sengoku period, Yamauchi Kazutoyo was the lord of the castle for 10 years.
At the height of his career, Yamauchi Kazutoyo carried out large-scale castle renovations, building the castle tower and main gate, as well as working hard to develop the castle town and flood control works on the Oi River.
Kakegawa was a place that held great significance in Kazutoyo's life, and it is said that Kochi Castle was modeled after Kakegawa Castle.
The beauty of the castle tower, with its aristocratic appearance, led to it being praised as the "famous castle of the Tokai region."
However, the castle tower and most of the other structures were damaged in the Ansei Tokai earthquake in 1854, and the castle was abandoned in 1869 without being rebuilt until the Meiji Restoration. After that, the enthusiasm and efforts of the Kakegawa citizens bore fruit, and the castle tower was rebuilt in wood for the first time in 140 years in 1994, once again showing its beautiful appearance.
Kakegawa Castle's main tower is made up of three exterior floors and four interior floors. The main tower, measuring 6 x 5 bays (approximately 12m x 10m), is not particularly large, but it has overhangs on the east and west sides, and a tower at the entrance, giving it a large, complex appearance.
The watchtower on the fourth floor is extremely small compared to the first and second floors, which is a vestige of the early castle towers, which had a watchtower placed on top of the main building. The pure white exterior, painted with white plaster, is thought to be modeled after the building of Jurakudai in Kyoto, and the black painted verandas and balustrades are modeled after the Osaka Castle main tower.
There are about 130 Shikizakura, Weeping Cherry, and Somei-Yoshino cherry trees planted around Kakegawa Castle, which are a delight to the eyes of many people every spring.

The castle tower, which was extensively renovated by Yamauchi Kazutoyo, was restored with wood in 1994. The Shisokumon Gate and Taiko Tower were also restored, along with the tower, but the crescent moat and Kiribuki Well are remnants that recall the past.

I visited here while waiting for the Shinkansen. It's about a 10-minute walk from Kakegawa Station. It was past 5pm so I couldn't go to the castle tower, but I went up the stone steps to the Tenshushitamon Gate just before it. From there I could see the city of Kakegawa and the full moon. It was a great place to see the view.
