I visited the Caribbean Manatee Conservation Center in late January and it was very interesting. I appreciated learning about their work from a very passionate staff. He showed me around and I was very impressed to learn how they take care of manatees and other animals in need like turtles and birds. If you are keen to support animal welfare and learn about manatees, this is well worth the visit.

We recently toured the Manatee Conservation Center in Bayamon, PR. The facility was clean, organized, and very well run. We had an excellent tour and learned so much about the conservation efforts that are taking place in Puerto Rico. The center not only supports & protects manatees, but also works to protect other injured & endangered species including turtles & birds. We were able to see a three month old baby manatee, three other older baby manatees, an adult manatee, some turtles and some birds. We learned how the facility responds to reports of injured animals, & how they even respond to issues that occur on other Caribbean islands. The facility relies on the support of over 100 volunteers- & with only 8 staff! They do incredible work & deserve to receive more funds for their efforts. We highly recommend visiting this facility & supporting their work!!

We did the manatee caretaker program and had a lot of fun meeting the manatees in the center’s care, and preparing for them a big salad for a snack. Because it is an active rehab center, you cannot interact with the animals as much as you might like, but my kids are passionate about animal conservation and we were glad to support the center and it was a great activity for our Puerto Rico vacation.

I should preface this review by noting that I absolutely love manatees and planned my trip to line up with when the center reopened following COVID restrictions. That said, I couldn’t recommend this experience enough. Our group signed up for the manatee caretaker for a day experience (it’s not really a day… only 2- 2 ½ hours) and it was a wonderful experience. At the time we visited, they had three adorable manatee calves, resident adult Guacara, and a menagerie of other animals. Just the chance to be so close to manatee calves is a once and a lifetime experience that I won’t forget and it is topped by the opportunity to help prepare the food and feed Guacara (an interaction that understandably isn’t permitted for non-resident manatees for their safety and security and is incredibly rare to find). Because of some of the efforts to help with Guacara’s veterinary care, we also got to see his gigantic personality (like putting his nostrils at the surface of the water to get food after learning the behavior for COVID tests).

I’ve seen past reviews complain about the price, but this isn’t a large, commercialized excursion. It is a tour at a small research and conservation center where we got the chance to learn about their work and see the animals under their care. The individuals working at the center clearly put time and effort into the visit. More importantly, the money that you are spending is going back to care for the wonderful animals we met. I’d pay for this experience any day over giving my money to a large, commercialized excursion – it’s educational, unique, and certainly worth the drive over to Bayamon.

I have a strange infinity for elephants. I also have an infinity for manatees. Whenever I travel and find opportunities to meet them, I take all the time to do so.
During my stay in Puerto Rico, I had to priceless opportunity to volunteered at the Manatee Conservation Center of Puerto Rico. My guide, Annilu, had a wealth of knowledge about how we can help these beautiful sea mammals, what they do in this facility to rehabilitate them, and how they are related to elephants 😳
Why do I have an infinity for these giant gray creatures? I might never know the answer to that, but the feeling I get when I’m around them is pure love. I feel genuine love and compassion towards them.
I'd highly recommend anyone traveling to PR to visit the facility and to give back - You can easily book this through AirBnB Experience!

We spent yesterday afternoon with Dinah and the team at the Manatee Conservation Center. While there, we learned about the manatees, turtles and pelicans in their care and how they came to the center, many were hit by boats! We cut up fruits and vegetables and fed the animals. We also helped take the animal’s temperature and watched as Dinah fed a baby manatee formula from a bottle. Very cute. We definitely left with the sense that caring for these animals was a labor of love for all the staff and student volunteers. Great for kids of all ages but probably best for kids above age 10.

We look for manatees in the Condado Lagoon every time we walk across the Dos Hermanos Bridge and decided to visit the Manatee Conservation Center as a Christmas week activity. We booked a tour online in advance and received confirmation by text and email. The Center is located on the Bayamon campus of Inter American University and it is an impressive research facility. The tour guide was wonderful and the center was bustling with activity as a baby manatee had just been rescued that morning. We couldn't have planned a better day for a visit. We got to see the new baby manatee while the scientists and doctors were examining it with love and compassion. In the pools and cages outside we saw 3 large manatees, 4 sea turtles, and 4 pelicans that have been rescued and rehabilitated and most will be released back into their natural habitat.

This is really an educational visit. All proceeds go to save the manatees and other marine life that needs help. The staff is fantastic and they love what they do. Bless them!

I visited with my parents and grandmother. The tour was in English and the tour guide gave great info about the manatees, turtles, and pelicans they have at the center. The guide told us where they rescued the animals from, the conditions they were in, the treatment they've received, and the process for letting them free once they've been rehabilitated. There was not a lot of walking involved, which suited my elderly grandmother who walks with a cane.

By chance, the day we took the tour they were brining in a 1-week old manatee that had been called in that morning to be rescued somewhere on the island. The center was hectic with the vets and volunteers getting ready to treat the baby manatee. We got to see the adorable baby manatee right when she arrived. It was sad that she'd been abandoned but happy that she was getting help.

Great place to visit if you want to learn more about manatees, and the entry fee is a donation to the center!

My son is a manatee lover, so we had to squeeze this into our trip. It was easy to schedule (even last minute) and find. Our guide was great, and the tour was customized to the knowledge level of the audience. It was a little sad, but real. We all walked away knowing a little more about manatees than we did before. And both my boys enjoyed the tour.
