This is a historic site where there used to be Komoro Castle, and during the Edo period, the Komoro clan's clan office was located here, functioning as the political center of the clan. It has now been developed as a park and is open to the public for a fee.
Although it has been developed as a park, excavation surveys are still being carried out in various places from the period when it was still functioning as a castle, so it’s not possible to enter all areas of the grounds. On the other hand, the site is clearly zoned, and there is a small amusement park, zoo, museum and shrine on the grounds, which often surprises visitors. However, perhaps because of the zoning, although the amusement park has a variety of colorful attractions, the other spots do not have much flashy decoration, and the design does not seem to spoil the scenery too much.
If you only go as far as you can walk, it's not that big, but because there are so many different spots like this, it's easy to spend an hour just walking around the grounds. Perhaps because the castle itself was designed to make good use of the natural defences, the views from the castle, including the Chikumagawa River, are wonderful. Also, as a castle ruin, the highlight is of course the stone walls that still exist, but it's probably the dry moat that was built to encircle the castle grounds. The size and depth of the moat are so great that it would be hard for enemies to get close, and the structure is truly impressive. Even if you don't stop by the zoo, amusement park or shrine, I think this is a historic site where you can fully enjoy the structure of the castle from long ago.

Kaikoen is a famous tourist spot in Shinshu.
It's so famous that I didn't have high expectations, but when I actually went there, I realized it was a very nice place.
There is an admission fee, but Kaikoen alone costs 300 yen (called a "walking ticket"), but if you buy a set ticket (500 yen), you can also see Chokokan, Fujimura Memorial Museum, Koyama Keizo Museum, and Komoro Gijuku Memorial Museum. Each facility is small, but it's just the right size to see while walking around. Since it's only 200 yen, the set ticket felt more economical (personal opinion).
Chokokan exhibits historical materials from the Edo period. You can see them in 20 minutes.
Koyama Keizo Museum exhibits works by the Western-style painter who was awarded the Order of Culture, and it's quite enjoyable. There is a rock sample garden around the museum, which is recommended for stone lovers.
The view from the castle tower is very beautiful.
There are many gazebos in the garden, so there are also spaces where you can take a break.
Parking is 500 yen. However, it is located right in front of JR Komoro Station, so it is easy to get there by train.

We went there this morning (Apr 13, 2024). Walk in minutes to Komoro Park from Komoro Station. After that, crossing underpass to Komoro Castle ruin. There are several animal such as Kawakami dog, a spider monkey, a penguin, a horse, a lion, etc in their cages. The cherry tree hasn't full bloom yet. Currently, few trees are blooming despite the flyer said April 1st to April 25th. If you come here only for cherry blossom, try calling the park. Maybe in several days later the cherry will fully bloom, Beside cherry trees, there is one tree named Keyaki with age 500 years old. Btw, the direction from station to the Park and the Castle ruin, is more easier to follow the map that you can find in some point. Using google maps made us went to Park. The facility in the area Castle ruin is very convenient, such as toilets, trash bins and drinking fountains.

We parked the car in the parking lot and walked around. The main part of the castle is the stone walls, but when we got to the castle tower, we realized it was on a hill and enjoyed the view. On the way, we came across a small Yatsushiro shrine called Kaiko Inari. There was a Kaiko Shrine in the back, which was a common case of a shrine being relocated to the castle ruins. It seemed that the type of admission ticket differed depending on where you went.

This park is centered around the ruins of Komoro Castle
and is very well maintained.
There was a lot to see,
but it was autumn leaves season so it was truly beautiful!
A must-visit tourist spot if you come to Nagano Prefecture.

Komoro Castle was abandoned when the feudal domains were abolished and prefectures were established in 1871. The castle ruins were developed into Komoro Castle Ruins Nostalgia Park during the Taisho era.
We entered the park through Sannomon Gate, which also serves as the park's entrance, and toured the beautiful, lush grounds, admiring the shrines and historical relics scattered throughout. Not only could we enjoy the remnants of Komoro Castle inside the park, but from the observation deck we could also see the Chikuma River flowing below. On our way back, we passed the adjacent zoo, and found a memorial hall along the way, making this a historic site with much to see.
