遊女たちがいた建物ということもあるからか、怖い伝説が残る場所でもあります。悲喜こもごもとしたドラマが数々あるようです。この一帯は潮待ちの港として栄えていたそうなので、こういった船乗りたちが過ごすために作られた施設が多々あり、ここもそのひとつだそうです。

御手洗は日本遺産の地域です。呉の島に遊女がいたとは知りませんでした。悲しい歴史も学びつつ地域のことを知れたのは理解が深まりよかったです。

御手洗の港が栄えた江戸時代に、遊女のいた茶屋跡で、無料公開しています。靴を脱いで上がると、右に小さな舞台があり、その向いには遊女たちが映った古い写真などが展示してあります。広間を抜けて中庭に出ることもできます。建物は鉄骨で補強してありました。

呉市の大崎下島の御手洗地区にあり、江戸時代には広島藩から免許をもらった御茶屋でした。船乗りたちがここの港に立ち寄り利用したそうです。無料で見学できます。

茶屋と名ばかりで、若胡子屋（わかえびすや）は早い話が妓楼です。風待ち、潮待ちで退屈だった船員たちにとって、御手洗の集落が“竜宮城”に見えたのでしょう。時には芸妓たちが小舟を仕立て、波を超えて船に向かったこともありました。波間に小さな提灯の明かりが見え隠れします。船がもたらした上方の人や物、そして文化。これも歴史の一断面です。邸内は１階が板張の大広間で、かなり重厚な造りです。２階にも部屋があります。外壁は漆喰で、蔵造り。ただ改築、改装が行われたようで、かなり手が入っています。いつまでも残しておきたい歴史的な建造物です。

This was a geisha house (or oiran house - as geisha was a term used mainly in Kyoto) that used to house 100 geisha during the Edo and early Meiji period. Not to be mistaken as a brothel - geisha were mostly entertainers who knew a variety of arts and instruments to entertain their guests. When Mitarai was a busy port, the wakaebisuya was frequented by wealthy visitors who wanted a night of expensive entertainment. Part of the attraction was showing off your status - as in 'I can afford this!'....
There's a scary story I heard associated with this place called the black-teeth incident...apparently geisha would blacken their teeth (the style at the time) but one day the top geisha couldn't get the black tar to stay on her teeth. Whatever she did the black coloring would run off. The waiting customer began to complain and owner of the geisha house started putting pressure on the geisha. In the panic, the geisha forgot to take the black tar off the small flame that simmered it. Then. the owner got so frustrated that she took the blackening liquid and forced it into the geisha's mouth - not realizing that the liquid was boiling. The geisha died a quick but agonizing death...but not before leaving a black stained hand-print on the wall - a hand print that according to local legend would not disappear however much it was washed or painted over!! Plus this apparently led to some hauntings over the years...
