A fascinating glimpse into our history as the industrial revolution evolves.
The mill and it's equipment illustrate the processing of cotton as it evolves from home working to the factory. Staff & volunteers have so much knowledge to share as they demonstrate the old machinery.
I enjoyed tours of a workers cottage & the hydro systems old & new in the basement of the mill. Running out of time to see the Apprentice house and it's story - hopefully can get back soon.
Gardens and cafes provided time to relax
Allow a full day to take in the full story of the site.

Can't recommend highly enough. So much to see and do. The mill, garden, house, apprentice house and village were all short walks apart. Several cafes and shops. Made for a very interesting and varied day out. Went with dogs but took it in turns to go in the mill.

All the pluses that 5 star reviews give. But what became grating is that the Trust has adopted a very 21st interpretation on how workers felt.
Yes, they worked hard.
But there is no acknowledgement of what conditions were like elsewhere at this time.
So it all starts to feel very one sided.
Also, service in the mill cafe is REALLY slow. It seems to be one woman on the till, 2 women faffing about round the back, and one woman doing all the work.

We visited quarry bank and took a tour of the apprentice house, the mill , the owners house , gardens and finished it off with cottage 13 out of all the very kind and welcoming volunteers the lady that was volunteering with judy was very welcoming, kind and generous but Judy doing the cottage 13 tour really stood out she was lovely, answered every question we had and knew so much that she had something to tell us the whole tour she kept us very intrigued and amused! many thanks to all volunteers that was there on Friday 13th September 2024!

Arrived at opening time so managed to get a place on the tours, make sure you ask about them because they bring the place alive. We did the tour of the Apprentice House, where we learned about the lives of apprentices, some very young, who were bought here to work in the mill. The owner kept them fed and employed a doctor in order to keep them working. Then we had a tour of one of the worker's cottages in Styal village and learned about some of its occupants. The mill itself is strangely beautiful. There were lots of enthusiast volunteers who started up the looms for us. Even one is noisy so a whole roomful must be overwhelming. You can also look around the Masters house, a mini Georgian mansion. The cafe by the mill was better than the usual National Trust offering we had a nice lamb stew. We had a very interesting day here.

Intetesting site showing life at the start of the industrial museum. Some well informed guides, shame we could not hear what he was saying above the noise of the waterwheel and weir

Not the best NT cafe (Garden Cafe) experience, which are usually great. Staff moaning, at length, abut lack of resource, staff stating "don't blame me for the mess." Staff clearly not getting on with each other. I am usually very positive, and have been an NT member for over 30 years, and always had great times great cakes, great coffee served by lovely people. I am sure it is just a temporary situation.

My favorite was the Apprentice Bulding was my favorite. So interesting! The children were found in work houses and given a different opportunity at Quarry Bank Mill. Also the docent who gave the tour was simply outstanding!

Excellent day out for the whole family.
We visited the Apprentice House and were particularly impressed with the presentation there.
After a delicious lunch in the restaurant we spent some time in the mill. Each floor had working machines and these were manned by very knowledgeable staff who made time to explain and answer questions. The activity room which allowed the children to dress up and create their own weaving etc was a good addition from our last visit.
The owner’s cottage, though only partially open, was again manned by staff who had lots of time to explain and talk about the refaces there.
We finished the day with an ice cream outside.
We could see that there was plenty of provision for younger children in the meadow nearby.
Would absolutely recommend. We will come again next year.

This is a great place to visit. Lovely gardens, the mill is very interesting, seeing and hearing the machines gives you a taste of what it was like. Take your own sandwiches for a picnic, and the guided tour of the apprentice house is a must.
