The church was built atop a hill overlooking the town and river, now in the Barangay Mataas na Bayan. Not only does the church feature thick walls along with the stout buttresses but the complex is itself surrounded by walls, a fort in all but name. With commanding views and steeply sloping hillsides this was a natural defensive location. Local stories tell of how the townspeople sought refuge behind these walls during pirate raids. It was during one of these raids that they prayed to Jesus’ mother, Mary, and she appeared and drove the raiders away. Thus began the devotion to “Mahal na Birhen ng Biglang Awa” or “Our Lady of Prompt Succor”.
It does take a steep but short climb up from downtown Boac to visit the church but it is worth the effort. The historical marker states the church was built in 1792 but a church of some form undoubtedly existed as the Catholic Church was established on Marinduque in 1579.
The church has some of the features of “Earthquake Baroque” architecture featured by Spanish colonial churches as an adaptation to the geologic reality of frequent earthquakes. The design was one of lower and wider proportions with thicker side walls with heavy buttresses for stability. The bell towers, too, are lower and stouter, wider at the base tapered at the top.
The main doors of the cathedral are impressive. They are made of heavy dark wood with bad-relief carvings of the four authors of the gospels; Saints John and Mark on one door with Luke and Matthew on the other. The church has undergone much restoration over the years and a variety of building materials have been used. The side walls and front feature red brick. Some of the buttresses probably have the most original construction material but even there the buttresses feature different stones and brick used for repair.
The interior is airy, cooled by breezes funneled through the main as well as side doors. It appears that there are large AC units arranged along the side walls. The retablo or colonial altarpiece is also quite impressive

Nach einem Bummel durch Boac sind wir zu der Cathedrale hochgelaufen, schöne Kirche mit Buntglasfenstern.
Vom Platz neben der Kirche hat man einen guten Ausblich auf Boac und die Küste.

It's amazing how they maintained it's original shape after all these year (228 years this year 2020). It is said that this is one of the silent witness of the history of Marinduque.

The Cathedral was built on a hill so there’s some view around it. This what makes it quiet as well. The Church’s sound system was also very good and helps you to really understand the Mass apart from the fact that it was in Tagalog. Southern Tagalog. Hearing Mass was a good experience.

This Cathedral is a very large, impressive one with attached belfry.
It is set high on a hill, overlooking the river, in well maintained, attractive grounds with a statue of Jesus, His Most Sacred Heart to one side. There is a centuries old huge wall around that allegedly protected the townsfolk from Muslim invaders after prayers to Our Lady by local Catholics were answered.
It was very serene inside and good to pray.
In recent tears it has has evaporative airconditioners installed.
Please donate to the Parish Office to assust with running costs and capital expenditure.

Soon after construction the church was not only a spiritual center but due to its walls it was a natural fortress in case of severe weather or attack. Originally built in 1756 the church was renamed in 1792. Oral tradition(1) states that pirates invaded the island, defeated the defenders, & started toward the church when Lady Immaculate Conception appeared and filled the intruders with fear until they retreated. After saving the town she was honored by naming the parish after her. In 2018 the National Museum declared the church an Important Cultural Property. The public is welcome to visit, pray, or attend mass services.

Our group made a stop here on the day tour. A church where parts are missing and parts are repaired. There is a small museum upstairs.
