Among the things we wanted to see in Portbou, was the mythical train station. Special charm, French design, reminiscent of the era in which he built and the elegance he continues to have over time

Portbou Railway Station is the international train station located in Portbou, the last town in Girona Region before to cross the border to France. It was built at the end of the 19th Century and it really seems other train stations built in this period like France Station in Barcelona. Nowadays, it is a place, which is not used much and only few trains everyday stop here and shops and information office are closed. It is a pity, because the place has a very interesting history and it is a very nice place to do a guided visit and learn his history. I recommend you arrive to the town obviously by train.

October 2023. It's the pampas, the desert, almost no one. Already the toilets inside the SNCF station need to be repaired because if it was okay before, although it was very small to fit in there, now it is a little degraded because the toilets are clogged, the flush does not work not, door lock that doesn't close everywhere, so for ladies it's not great. Otherwise, as it is not very busy, it should be more secure because there are migrants who are often there in this Port-Bou station, and if no one else around, it could be dangerous for especially solitary travelers. at certain times when not even someone at the counter. Recently several migrants went up to Port-Bou and apparently hid in the toilets of the French TER train (direction Cerbère-Avignon) and then having been thrown at Cerbère on the French side, they blocked the track and prevented the 2:04 p.m. train ( the one therefore departing from Port-Bou) to start, towards Avignon. So it should be more monitored in relation to these intruders. In addition, it would be good to add a drinks and food vending machine because there is nothing to "eat" if you don't have the time or the desire to go to Port-Bou itself.

If you consider that Portbou has nothing to offer apart from the Walter Benjamin monument, you can spend a few hours on the beach. The beach is rocky, but the water is beautifully clear.
But the only bars/restaurants directly on the beach are extremely old, a lot of them are closed and everything looks run-down and shabby. Therefore, the beach is only recommended if you are a day tourist and want to move on quickly.

We travelled today from Carcassonne via Perpignan through Cerbere and Portbou on our way to Girona. Trip was pleasant with beautiful scenery along the way.
At Cerbere, border control enters the train and check all passports. Those not in possession of the right papers were escorted off the train.
At Portbou we boarded our first Rodalies train. There were a few "funny" characters on board but the lady conductor and two big security guards with weapons arrived and these people were escorted off the train. Throughout our journey, security patrolled the train and removed quite a few people.
Regarding the station at Portbou - we were pleasantly surprised. There was a ticket sales counter where we were able to buy tickets. There was also a ticket machine as well as a lift which helps if you have big luggage like us. In the middle you do go up via stairs though. The toilets were clean. There are no shops but the station is clean .

A mandatory visit to this building that gives us an idea of the importance in the town's past.
Feeling of nostalgia for its time of splendor. It needs good maintenance of the environment.

Having already used the high speed TGV from Paris to Girona, we decided to travel by slower Media Distancia and regional trains to Portbou and Cebere.
Portbou station is magnificent but the building needs doors and windows painted. Lots of backpackers use this cheaper rail route.
Trains from Cebere often miss connections to Girona and Barcelona as the same RENFE set does not continue on. Get your act togethef RENFE.
There are lifts including to the town. Good.
Station staff did not speak English, in contrast to Girona. Poor as Portbou attracts many who can speak English but not Spanish.

Portbou Railway Station is the big station located in the center of Portbou, the last Catalan town before the border with France. It is a very big border station and it has another one in the last town in France: Cerbere. It is a station built at the end of 19th Century and it is very nice, specially the the main nave with some railways. Also, it is a very interesting place if you like the history of the 20th Century: the last station of Spain, where a change of the measure of railways was necessary to enter to France. Very interesting. Nowadays, you can see some travelers, which come to Spain in train. Also, from the station you can see nice views of the main church of Portbou.

I’m sure Portbou railway station is run by a cousin of Manuel from Fawlty Towers. Manuel was from Barcelona wasn’t he. We decided to take a half day jaunt from Barcelona to Cerbère the first town across the border in France. Getting there was easy. It was a couple of minutes walk from our hotel to Passeig de Gràcia station and as per our research a regional train direct to Cerbère cost 12 Euros each and the trip took about two and half hours.
After a bit of sight seeing and pretty good lunch at a seaside restaurant it was time to head back to Barcelona. At Cerbère station we discovered that while trains can run from Barcelona to Cerbère, they can’t run back the same way. The train only goes to the Spanish town of Portbou on the other side of the border, literally at the other end of the tunnel that goes through the hill that separates the two towns and the two countries.
So we bought tickets for the next train for 2 Euros each and then took a six minute ride through the tunnel. At Portbou we got off, found the ticket booth and discovered the next train for Girona and Barcelona was leaving immediately or we could wait in scenic Portbou for the next one in a couple of hours.
As sipping sangrias on the Rambla sounded better than staring at rusting rail stock for the afternoon, we opted for the first train as did a trio of backpackers we’d met on the other side of the tunnel and raced back to the platform to board the exact same train we had just gotten off of and headed south to Girona.
Alternatively we could have opted to go over the hill, there is a winding road and presumably a border checkpoint. Driving it or taking a cab would take about 14 minutes and walking it about 45. I doubt there would be an issue doing so as there was no Passport check on returning to Spain. When we got off in Cerbère, a disinterested French policeman took a cursory look at our Passports but that was it. While waiting for the return train we saw four heavily armed French cops escorting two teenagers into the station, presumably caught sneaking into France from Spain and probably North Africa before that. Sneaking into France isn’t on, but apparently one could into Spain if you don’t have a couple of Euros.
