If I could give this attraction more than five stars I would. One to five stars is quite a blunt tool and I have given quite a few five star reviews in my time but none are more deserving than the Scottish Crannog Centre. It is exceptional in every sense. If you’re thinking that there’s not much to do or see as the Crannog burnt down last year - think again. The knowledge, skill and enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers make this the best visitor attraction I’ve visited in many a long year.

Literally all the spaces you pass through are fascinating and expertly explained. I must apologise as I cannot remember everybody’s name - but they were all so passionate it was wonderful. The experience started with John’s tour of the museum where he also explained the Crannog’s place in history and how it was built. Then we moved to Toby’s woodworking space where he gave a practical demo of woodworking at the time. We then moved to textiles with the spinning lady’s demo and Jason’s explanation of dyeing - if you thought you knew about Woad, think again! On to leatherwork with Rebecca and Verity. Rebecca had made a leather vessel that could hold liquid - amazing. Verity also helped the cooking lady where we got to taste some bread as it would have been made in the Iron Age. It was delicious. The tour finished with us writing to loved ones far away, then burning the notes in the fire so the messages are carried to them in the smoke and all the while being sung to by a woman with the most beautiful voice. The message concept is apparently Canadian First Nation rather than Iron Age Scots but it fitted in perfectly with the day.

After the tour we had a great hot chocolate and a long chat with John, Jason and Graham about a wide range of things, Crannog related and not. Everyone, including the lady you gave us our tickets and the one who made our hot chocolate (thanks for the marshmallows!), were so friendly and accommodating it really elevated the whole experience. Many, many thanks to all.

Finally, the fact the Centre is a Scottish Living Wage Employer and was flying both and Rainbow and Ukrainian Flags really made my day.

We’ll be back when the new Crannog is built across the loch, if not before!

After mixing up times and missing this cool tour 15yrs ago, my husband and I were determined to return with our 12 and 10 yr old during this year’s Scotland visit. We were heartbroken to learn that their crannog was recently lost in a fire, but is it terrible to say we almost didn’t miss it?

The iconic structure must have surely been the centerpiece of the tour in years past, and we’d have loved, loved, loved to have seen it. But there was so much else on offer to keep us curious, fascinated, perplexed, and imagining life in the Iron Age that we didn’t feel it’s absence. The archeologist who lead the first part of the tour shared so much fascinating information and made a passionate and compelling case for rethinking our notions of “primitive” and “advanced” societies. The living history guides in the outdoor stations were engaging, knowledgeable, and fun to learn from, observe, and talk with. It’s set up beautifully, so that small groups can move smoothly from covered area to covered area, learning from period-dressed guides about pot-making, wood-turning, textiles, and cooking & plant medicine. So encouraging to see the range of ages of folks involved, particularly how many young adults are an integral part of keeping this history alive.

We couldn’t help but walk away thinking of how this enthusiastic group of skill-sharing history-keepers will turn the tragedy of the fire into an exciting opportunity to learn and teach their own and their visitors in real time as they rebuild. We can’t wait to see them do it.

Couple other notes - the wee gift shop is terrific. All of it really - but particularly the book section. And the schedule of events is on point - hands-on workshops, and evening music & storytelling, and seasonal celebrations looks terrific. The one we planned to attend had to be cancelled, but it only solidified our resolve to return. Maybe to volunteer. The Scottish Crannog Centre is a treasure! Thanks so much for hosting us yesterday.

I loved this place. Everyone was really informative and I learnt alot about the crannog history and uses. The crannog itself has burnt down but the tour was brilliant around the museum and the outdoor re-enactments of the life has it was was brilliant. I highly recommend this centre. We took our two dogs and although they were not allowed on the indoor tour they were allowed outside for the demo’s. Staff lovely

What a wonderful, magic place!
Even though the actual modern crannog burned down (so sad!!!), we absolutely loved it, felt right at home.
An excellent reason to go visit and donate (which we happily did, plus spending a fair amout in the giftshop to support this amazing project!) is so they can rebuild it in the next 2-3 years!!! We’re so excited to go back.
The young people explaining all the interesting things are happy, passionate guides, the project really is full of heart and brains, we would have loved to stay there for days and hear ALL the things, ALL the stories, try ALL the techniques, from stone pecking to weaving and dying wool, baking bread, drinking nettle tea in selfmade cups, smoking fish, learning all the great skills surrounded by a gorgeous place. A wonderful experience!!!

All the tourist sites still show the iron age replica crannog on Loch Tay but in fact it burnt down in June 2021 so we felt very deceived as we had no idea that had happened! The young lass doing the tour of the museum attached was very knowledgeable and to be commended but standing on a log pier/platoon looking at some burned stumps in Loch Tay was a big let down as I'd seen several documentaries about the iron age finds and the crannog rebuild etc. The site is being relocated to the opposite side of the Loch and rebuilt on a 12 acre site with tons more things and phase one should be ready for tourists at the end of 2023.

Hi, thanks for visiting and taking the time to leave a review. We are glad you enjoyed your tour through the museum, and we hope you enjoyed the rest of the living site as well! We are very sorry your experience was impacted by the fire. To our knowledge, no tourist sites mention the crannog still being there, our website and Facebook detail the fire, but if you let us know what sites you saw it on, Email us at info@crannog.co.uk and we will get it amended.

Really nice experience and a nice change from all the Castles. Really worth it if you are in the area. It's one of the very few experience covering the iron so it's really interesting. Lots of explanation and live demonstration.

This is a must see and do for anyone traveling through Scotland. It is unlike any other experience, staffed by incredibly talented and dedicated people. We participated in the Iron Age Tools workshop. Each artisan we met took the time to share/teach their craft while weaving stories about the past into our conversations. I felt like I had been transported back in time to experience life and hospitality from 2,500 years ago.

We visited to learn about storytelling traditions we could bring back to our students. Even though we did not share this in advance, the staff made sure we got to meet with their in residence storyteller and shared their own favorite stories, too.

They have plans to expand in the coming years and will be reconstructing the Crannog lost to fire last year. Don’t wait to visit though. You will want to come back anyway. It’s worth multiple visits. If I lived in Scotland, it would be on my annual to do list.

This is a wonderful place to learn about how Iron Age people in Scotland lived and worked. Sadly, the actual crannog burned last year, but the museum and living museum workshops are active and fascinating. The tour guides are obviously extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the site. Free parking across the street. There is something for all ages here!
