We've just got home from a great day out at the Observatory Science Centre. There are lots of interactive exhibits helping kids to understand things like mechanics, electricity, magnetism and light. Some are fairly small and there are some large pieces outside. There are a couple of large water table type activities outside which our two (5 and 7yo) could have spent hours playing with. It was a science weekend and we went to a talk on sound, a planetarium show about cells in our body and a tour of the telescopes - all were very good and the kids enjoyed them. The astronomer giving the tour on the telescopes was particularly good, I think his name was Jack, his enthusiasm about astronomy really came across. We spent about 6 hours here today and felt the family ticket was a bargain price compared to other days out. We've travelled for about an hour and a half today from SE London but will definitely look to come again for another science weekend.

This is a fascinating place. Really interesting history. Needs an injection of cash and some TLC but wonderful staff (very likely some not all are volunteers). We'll worth a visit, adjacent to Herstmonceux Castle and gardens so a great combination visit.

came to today with a group, had a private tour with very knowledgeable guides, really interesting place. Great café, gift shop as well

Very interesting, we spent the entire day here, and the children wanted to go round again!
We all found the telescope and space travel talks (and demonstrations!) fascinating. Plenty of scientific experiments and demos to try, and lots of variety, covering water, energy, electricity, space, physics - and mostly well explained.
One problem was with the parking arrangements - coming down the road there is a sign which directs you into the main gate (along with visitors to the castle). People were turning in here, only to be met by a staff member directing visitors to the science centre to turn round and go down the road a little further to a hardstanding car park (I think this is only the case when the grass parking is too wet). However, it would have been much simpler just to have had a sign outside the front directing science centre visitors to the next car park down the road, whilst inviting castle visitors to use the main entrance. As it was, people were having to reverse out onto the road - before long someone is going to get hurt.

Fantastic place. So interesting and educational. Our eight year old really enjoyed it and we all learnt a lot. Lovely polite staff and lots to do. We enjoyed the science show and the playground in particular.

Heaven help you if you are disabled at this venue!
Booked trip. Checked there was a disabled parking area. There was but space could not be guaranteed. Bit difficult / impossible to drop myself off if I’m driving.
I was meeting family inside,
There are lots of uneven floors and some parts are very dark.
The place is uncared for and scruffy. The disabled loo was disgusting .
The interactive exhibits have seen better days. Went and listened to a talk about one of the telescopes. The children I was with are primary age and it did not capture their interest.
The playground is ok but watch the children because some of the equipment needs an adult to explain the point of it. There is a corkscrew that has the potential to catch a finger!
Cafe basic and closed early. Prices high for basic things like a jacket potatoes.
No we won’t go back . The whole place needs a makeover and revamp.

Really good fun for young and old, lots of interesting and interactive things to pay with.
Events throughout the day which were fascinating, kept the kids entertained and us adults.
Food on site was not bad and reasonable prices.
Car parking was out by the main gate so had to walk in but the weather was good and sunny so not an issue.

We just had the most wonderful few hours. Really good value for money. Rediscovered our childish curiosity and wonder. Great to interact, explore, experiment. Outside area is lovely to enjoy on a sunny day. Staff are fun, friendly and helpful.

Loads of great fun experiments for the children to do and interesting tours of the telescopes. However it took 45 mins to get two jacket potatoes and a toastie in an empty cafe. Oh and it cost £19. Otherwise great!

Not entirely sure of opening times for January but we went with children aged from 18 months to 10. Probably not ideal for the youngest child but all the others (5-10) had the best time ever! As did the adults - tons to see & do & interact with for most ages but we wouldn't take the youngest again. Have fun!
