Beautiful textiles. The expertise is amazing and there is a good selection. They only take cash so be prepared, but you are supporting a good cause plus getting amazing weaved goods.

I took the dyeing and multi-day blouse weaving class here. It was an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone, textile enthusiasts and anyone interested in learning more about the Mayan culture and weaving in general. They also offer shorter scarf, wall hanging, and market basket weaving classes that would be more appropriate for beginners, children, or anyone with limited time. The best way to arrange a class is to contact Amalia via WhatsApp. The number is listed on their Facebook page. I already knew how to weave when I took the classes but I really enjoyed learning new local techniques from Amalia and her mother Juana, learning about natural dyeing, and getting a glimpse into their daily lives. I was even able to purchase a bunch of naturally dyed thread for use in my weaving in home. Can’t recommend highly enough!

Excellent workshop.
Amalia and her team were very efficient, great communication & able to fit me in on late booking.
Step by step instruction on this empowering form of weaving.
After one session you leave with a beautiful woven scarf/ wall hanging.
We met Amelia’s delightful family, ate freshly baked Easter bread with coffee & a cold drink made from fruits from the garden.
a truly rewarding experience.

We had such a fun time doing the wall hanging class! Amalia was very kind and helpful, her whole family was a part of the organization and they welcomed us with smiles. Not much English spoken, but good Spanish. My Spanish is iffy but we got by and created really gorgeous wall hangings and loved learning about natural dyes and backstrap look weaving

I took the weaving class (~3 hours) with TinteMaya, and it was such a special experience! The ladies are so sweet and eager to share their knowledge of weaving and natural dyes. It was so cool to see, participate in, and support a women’s collective that practices ancestral practices. The peaceful outdoor space is full of plants (which they use for dies), bees (non-stinging, for honey), and other women weaving and chatting quietly. Weaving my scarf provided me a moment of peace and meditation. I recommend if you are crafty and/or interested in learning Mayan weaving.
Some logistical notes:
- I scheduled the class ahead of time through WhatsApp (the number is on their Facebook), they were quick to respond and accommodating.
- Most of the scarf was prepared by them beforehand, so I picked which scarf I wanted to complete and wove the last couple feet of it
- You can pick between a scarf or wall hanging
- I spoke in Spanish to them, it seemed like English was a bit of a stretch

I would come back to Guatemala just to hang out at TinteMaya! Truly! While I received hands on and patient instruction to weave my own scarf (incredible hands-on experience), my husband played soccer with their kids and made tortillas by hand with the grandmother. TinteMaya welcomed us warmly and it felt like the most authentic experience we had during our trip to various parts of Guatemala! A must-do experience in Lake Atitlan! I can’t wait to go back!

My wife and I visited TinteMaya because she loves learning how to make things by hand. We only planned on being there a couple of hours for the weaving workshop, but we had so much fun that we stayed for over 4 hours and wished we could have stayed longer!! Spending time with the Ramos familia was by far our favorite part of the entire week we spent in Guatemala. Not only did we learn about weaving textiles, we also learned about coffee, how to make tortillas, about specialty bees, about different types of organic corn (maiz), and about the history & culture of the Mayan people. We were treated to fresh hot coffee, hot chocolate, fresh hot tortillas, and different types of honey. Their entire family welcomed us so warmly and we had the best time!!

We strongly recommend having this experience. We spent an entire afternoon learning weaving from Juana. But beyond the transmission of his know-how, we were able to chat with his daughter, his granddaughter, his grandson. It was a beautiful moment of sharing that we will not forget. We leave with two pretty scarves. Go for it, without hesitation!

The women from TinteMaya are wonderful! Juana and her daughter showed us how to weave and it was great fun. We wove a wall decoration and a table runner. We had a great time and learned a lot about the Mayan culture. Highly recommended!!!

Amalia was the most kind, funny and generous teacher. Her patience and guidance was outstanding and the workshop gave us a new-found appreciation for the skill and time that goes into such beautiful pieces. There was flexibility in the day (we went for lunch mid-way, to give our backs and brains a rest) and we left with our own lovely scarves. Highly recommend this workshop and thanks to Amalia and her lovely colleauges for their amazing mentoring.
