Amalia was the most kind, funny and generous teacher. Her patience and guidance was outstanding and the workshop gave us a new-found appreciation for the skill and time that goes into such beautiful pieces. There was flexibility in the day (we went for lunch mid-way, to give our backs and brains a rest) and we left with our own lovely scarves. Highly recommend this workshop and thanks to Amalia and her lovely colleauges for their amazing mentoring.

We stumbled upon this wonderful experience when walking through San Juan. We learnt so much about the textile trade for women in Guatemala. Amelia was so welcoming and allowed us to sample many things. In the end I bought a beautiful table runner which will remind me of this wonderful experience when I take it home. Well worth the visit and so glad we came across this.

I visited Tinte Maya with a group of 4 relatives. Amalia was all set up and ready for us when we arrived. We learned so much and had SO MUCH fun. It was more than a weaving class really, they taught us about their work and it actually felt kind of like being included in their family for the day. Amalia's husband and kids visited with us. It was a wonderful way to spend a day in San Juan. Highly recommend!!!

We had the best time today at tinte maya! We naturally dyed yarn and made two scarfs which were absolutely gorgeous. Amelie (not sure how to spell correctly!) was so welcoming and gave us the best experience we could’ve imagined. She took us round the garden and showed us all the different plants and what colours they made. She was extremely patient and kind. I couldn’t recommend tinte maya more. Perfect for all ages too!

The weaving workshop was a wonderful and special experience! I am very glad and grateful for the workshop experience.
Amalia and Juana taught and guided me to weave a beautiful scarf. I was able to select the thread colors when I had stopped by the store a couple of days prior to the workshop day. In addition to the experience of weaving a scarf--special on its own--I was also able to learn about their community's lifestyle and traditions through chatting with Amalia while weaving. I speak very very little Spanish, but Amalia spoke slowly, with examples and much patience.
Amalia and Juana were always there to offer help and watch over my progress, but they also let me take my time to work through the weaving. After completing the scarf, I received an insightful tour of their garden from Amalia's adorable son, Fabian, who showed me the various dye sources and let me taste their homemade honey.
I ended up spending ~5 hours and recommend keeping your day flexible so that you can take as much time as you'd like for this experience.

I cannot express enough how happy I am that I stopped by to take a weaving workshop with Amalia, as well as how grateful I am that Tinte Maya exists. I dropped in one morning around 10am and left by 2pm with a craft that is both a souvenir of my time at Lake Atitlan, but represents to me the beautiful story of the women of San Juan who started the weaving associations to create opportunities for themselves and their families. Amalia was with me every step of the way, explaining the loom and how to create the patterns. There are a few options for what you can weave, including a wall hanging, a scarf, and a table setting. The experience was so tranquil, and a craft I can take back home with me. I believe you can get through this class with very minimal Spanish, but knowing a little goes a long way in learning about the story of the women at the shop and the good it has brought to the community. The little outdoor shop is stocked with beautiful makeup pouches, scarves, table cloths, and more for amazing prices. Even if you don’t take a workshop, Amalia will show you the different plants and herbs used to create the natural dyes, as well as the medicinal bee colonies they have set up. Arriving by boat, the shop is about a 10-15 minute walk from the docks. However, about half of it is uphill, so a short tuk tuk ride for around 10Q should get you there in less than 5 minutes easily. I cannot recommend this store and workshop enough! I only wish I had the time to do the dye workshop, as well. Thank you so much, Amalia!

A must do in Atitlan!! My absolute favourite part of my week in Atitlan was my classes at Tinte Maya.
On arrival we explained we just wanted to look around and maybe book a classz and were shown and explained the different natural techniques they used for dying fabrics - from the bark on trees, to magical leaves, and even by using dead bugs!? Amalia was so enthusiastic about the whole process we were addicted and decided to stay that afternoon and start our 'classes'.
I had pants I wanted to make a matching scarf for, so we dyed a few rolls of cotton my ideal shade of blue, which was utter magic to witness. I returned the next day where I was taught how to weave and assisted to make my very own Mayan scarf! It was so fun, incredibly relaxing and surprisingly addicting.
The family was so incredibly kind and patient and I spent just as much time chatting with the kids and playing with the dogs as I did weaving!
Truly one of the most special experiences I've ever had while traveling. They communicated so well despite my rotten Spanish skills, especially about things as detailed as ancient dyeing techniques, and I felt like I was part of the family!
Muchas gracias por todos, I will definitely be returning next time I am in Atitlan. Cannot recommend visiting this little shop highly enough - whether to buy a souvenir, or make one yourself!

The morning we spent with Amalia and her family at TinteMaya was the highlight of our trip to Lake Atitlan. I took the dye workshop along with my two kids. Our Spanish is very basic yet Amalia was kind and patient with all of us and her family was very hospitable. It was fascinating to learn how she spins cotton into thread and used plants grown right on the property to dye the thread! The memories we made here will last a lifetime.

I spent a few amazing days at Tinte Maya. Doing the weaving and natural dying workshop was one of the best experiences I had in Guatemala. Amalia and her Family are very welcoming and I loved to learn about weaving and natural dying from her and her mother. I could select my own colours and loved creating my own textil.
I highly recommend spending some time at Tinte Maya. You will not only learn about a traditional handcraft but also get to know some amazing local women! :)

C'est un endroit vraiment merveilleux, la famille est hyper accueillante et généreuse d'histoires et de conseils. On apprend à tisser, on voit le processus de A à Z. On a fait notre sac à mains et on est reparti avec.
