「みずかずばの御歌」というのは御茶ノ水女子大学の校歌にもなっている短歌です。２００６年の本館の改修工事の際にこの歌の碑も建てられました。

お茶の水女子大学の学園祭（徽音祭）で知りました。「みがかずば」は、お茶の水女子大学の前身である東京女子師範学校の開校にあたり、皇后（昭憲皇太后）から、 明治8（1875）年12月に下賜された御歌です。本館正面に校歌「みがかずば」の御歌碑が2006年10月17日、3年間に及ぶ本館の改修完了を記念して新たに設置されました。新しいものとして、シアトルエスプレスカフェ お茶の水女子大学店が展開されていました。

Ochanomizu is the oldest and most prestigious university for women in Japan. Back in 1872, Meiji Empress gave a word of encouragement to the female students in the form of poem. Migakabazuba (=without polishing) is the first phrase of the poem.
The whole poem means: “Polishing is a very important and necessary process to transform rough gemstones into precious jewellery (=tama) and an ancient bronze mirror (=kagami) to reflect clearly. Likewise, it is important for us to continue to study and educate (i.e., polish) ourselves. This poem has been the university song. Although the university emblem is a flower of “ocha” (tea), replica of Yatano-kagami (sacred ancient mirror) is on the gate.
There is a security guard at the gate to loan you a visitor lanyard. It would be better if you can visit with a current student, staff or alumni.
