We will provide information about Hibiya Shrine, located in Higashi-Shinbashi 2-chome, Minato-ku. This time, we visited Hibiya Shrine on December 25, 2023. To access Hibiya Shrine, exit the A1 exit of Shinbashi Station on the Toei Asakusa Line, go to the right and there will be a passage that goes under the JR Yamanote Line overpass. Go through it and go left for about 50m and you will come to an intersection where the Daiichi Keihin and Kanjo 2 lines intersect. Hibiya Shrine is located ahead on the left hand side of the intersection. First, let's look at the history and overview of Hibiya Shrine. Hibiya Shrine was located in a place called Otsukayama in the former Kojimachi-ku Hibiya Park, which is now Hibiya Park. It was also known as Hibiya Inari Myojin Tabidomari Inari Myojin. Unfortunately, the founding date of Hibiya Shrine is unknown. Hibiya Shrine has a history of being relocated many times. First, in 1606, at the end of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, the shrine was moved to Shibaguchi to allow for the construction of the Hibiya Gomon Gate when Edo Castle was built. In 1872, it was designated a village shrine, and then, in the wake of the Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred in 1923, it became the subject of urban planning rezoning in 1928, and its land was transferred to Atago Shitacho 2-chome, and the shrine building of Hibiya Shrine was constructed in what is now Shinbashi 4-chome. Although the shrine's location has moved from Hibiya to Shinbashi, the "Hibiya" part of the shrine name has remained since the beginning. The reason why Hibiya Shrine is called Tabitomari Inari is that when Hibiya Shrine was located in Hibiya Park, it opened its shrine office to travelers from all over Japan who were suffering and offered prayers for health and longevity. The shrine was blessed with such blessings that travelers and people around it began to call it Tabitomari Inari. After it was moved to Shinbashi, the name changed to "fish mackerel" and it came to be called Saba Inari. It was said that people who suffered from tooth decay would be cured if they refused mackerel and made a vow, and since then, people who were cured have been offering mackerel to Hibiya Shrine. The grand festival is held every other year, alternating with Karasumori Shrine, also located in Shinbashi. It is a shrine that has been deeply revered by people since ancient times as the guardian deity of Shinbashi and Shiodome.
Now, let's visit Hibiya Shrine. When you cross the intersection, you will see a vermilion torii gate in front of you and a pillar monument of Hibiya Shrine on the left. The shrine is located at the top of the stone steps after passing through the torii gate. If you bow and look up at the torii gate, you can see a skyscraper in the background, which is different from the shrines I have visited so far. This matches the scenery well and makes a great picture for Instagram. I am not very good at taking pictures, so I couldn't get a good one, but it really feels like a sacred place in the middle of a big city. After passing through the torii gate and going up the stone steps, there is a "washing stand" on the left, the "shrine" in front, and the "offering office and shrine office" on the right. And to the left of the shrine is the "Inari Shrine" within the grounds. The "shrine" was built in 2002 and has a brand new, urban, and sophisticated feel. There is not much to see, but the view from the grounds is surrounded by a big city view like nothing I have ever seen before, which felt very strange. [Quick notes about Hibiya Shrine]

An interesting example of a juxtaposition between a shrine or temple which is opposite once of the top nightlife spots in Tokyo called GOLDEN GAI. This shrine is small but good to take pics and see another side of Tokyo. Though you wont take long there, good to drop by for a quick look.
