My wife and I came to Junichi Nakahara's exhibition, where you can see the image of my mother from a long time ago. I was a “little father”, “Motoi” and “Grandpa” from the countryside, and my mother was from the countryside and had already passed away for many years, but I was in Nagoya with my aunt for a period of time when she was young, working in the silk industry. Decades later, when I was a naughty kid in kindergarten or elementary school, my mother's old sewing machine was placed in a corner, and I think there was something like Junichi Nakahara's magazine, a booklet. When I watched it silently to my mother, it gave me a unique sense of the intersection of my mother's mysterious childhood, which I didn't know, and her realistic image. This exhibition reminded me of that, and it was a time when I enjoyed my memories of that time and the image of my mother. In my mother's youth in the early Showa era, there was nothing but a creative sensibility that I always had.

This is a small museum, so you'll spend only an hour here, however it is well worth the entry fee. If you are interested in either architecture or art, then I would highly recommend. The building itself is beautiful and intriguing, and you can only really appreciate it fully from inside.
The current exhibition, featuring artwork and designs by Junichi Nakahara, is absolutely charming. I really enjoying his work and thought it was beautifully curated.
The intro to the exhibition is written in English, but after that most info is Japanese, but this really is no problem as really the art speaks for itself.

It is about a 5-minute walk from Shinsen Station. It opened in 1981. The building was designed by Shirai Seiichi and is made of reinforced concrete, with two floors above ground and two below. There is an atrium with a fountain in the center of the building, and behind that is a semicircular exhibition room. Admission fees vary depending on the exhibition. When I visited, the exhibition on display was "Sugimoto Hiroshi - Honkadori Higashi Kudari" and admission was 1,000 yen. It is not a large museum and does not often hold exhibitions of major artists, but this means you can take your time to appreciate the exhibits.

南薫造の小品展とあって出かけたが公募の松濤美術展と同時開催のため展示の作品は少なかった。おまけに以前開催された「南薫造展」に出品されなかった作品だっただけになおのこと見応えは劣った。ただ作品｢雪の積もった家」の描き方が他のものと際だって異なり、この方面に進んだら味わい深い作品が生まれただろうなどと勝手な想像を膨らませてこの作品に見入っていた。また公募展の方では｢松濤賞」受賞作より黒須氏の｢海月」の方が良かった気がした。

一つのテーマに沿って複数のアーティストの作品から構成される展覧会では、どこかで自分の好みを外れる場合がありますが、今回の「終わりのむこうへ:廃墟の美術史」では、それがまったくなかったばかりか、むしろ新たな着眼点と見解を得て感銘しました。この展覧会をきっかけに自分の好む画家を新たに知ったのは大きな収穫でした。図録が会期終了前に完売した実状は、企画の質の高さゆえだと思います。
建物そのものもアート作品であり、現実逃避ができる空間です。今後の企画にも注目していきます。
