As a body of water, I don't think its getting the Lake District worried - some people were splashing about on a warm August Sunday though.
Easy to park, as there is plenty of room along a quiet road even if the car park is full (which it wasn't).
Its 1.5 miles one way walk to Malham Cove and its an interesting and scenic route and much quieter than approaching from Malham.

A nice walk for a few hours. Took about 2.5hrs at a relaxed pace. Mixture of lakeside, woods, fields and road. Would be fine with a pushchair/ mobility scooter.
Well signposted and could easily miss the last bit of the loop across the fields.

Malham Tarn is a National Trust nature reserve. It is placed in the middle of picturesque Yorkshire Moors. The travel there is via narrow country roads and be sure to find where the car park is before setting off. It was not busy when we arrived. There was a heavy mist but good sunshine when we left.
It is a beautiful site. We opted for a short 4 mile walk because the ground was saturated and we wanted to use hard pathways or broad walks where possible.
For this reason we did not make the extra trek across the moors to Malham Cove and will save it for another day. We got a blimps from the car on the way back to our hotel - it looks amazing. It will be another case of finding the parking is before we start the day.

We were slightly disappointed by Malham Tarn. We had thought that the activity centre was open to the public with toilets on site. This was not the case, although he walk was pleasant. If you have to choose one site, Malham Cove is stunning.

Well worth the walk! This tranquil setting is a beautiful place to relax by the tarn and take in the stunning scenery. Be aware there is cattle and sheep grazing en route, on our visit today, there was a herd of young bulls wandering around and some young calfs with their Mums, they're fine as long as you give them room.
There are optional routes that follow the Penine way, look out for the signs. Highly recommend the visit.
If you don't want to walk to the cove there is a car park close by, follow the signs for Malham Tarn if travelling by car up to the tarn

We visited on a sunny day in may, the first thing we noticed was that the area was not heavily signposted and we ended up down a track where we had to turn round at the gate (this is mostly our fault but it’s where Google maps took us). The area itself seems well kept and is very natural, we did the boardwalk first but there wasn’t much to see to be honest at this time of year (and with it being so dry). The walk to the lake was mostly flat with only some small inclines and then it was downhill again to the side of the lake where you could sit on the shore on the pebbles. It was lovely and quiet aside from a large group of college boys who were throwing rocks into the lake and splashing around. The only thing it could maybe benefit more from is a little refreshment stand / more wayposts so you don’t get lost. Saying this, we had a lovely time!

We called off to look on going between Malham and Settle. You park up and then walk for about five minutes over the dale till you reach the tarn. Very picturesque and also very breezy being the highest lake in the country.

This walk started well. The pathways were well maintained and the views of the tarn were beautiful.
Unfortunately we could only get halfway round the tarn and then had to walk a very long way on the roads to get back to the start.

Can you kayak on the tarn if you have your own kayak and equipment etc?

No you cant do anything on it because there is some poisonous algae growing. it warns you not to let your dogs go near it as well.
