hidden gem
2021年9月
Loved my visit of the Bayernhof Museum. I especially recommend this tour to music lovers and antiques lovers, but I think everyone will find something interesting on this tour.

The house is full of interesting antiques and collections. I wish I had more time to study some of these.

My favorite part of the tour was the descriptions and playing of the music boxes.

The tour tries to balance story telling with music box playing with a "house tour."

An Interesting and Strange Vanity Project
2020年10月
This museum is an interesting and head-scratching 2-1/2 hour journey into the eccentric mind of a successful businessman who created a vanity project designed to keep his memory alive.
Our guide, Jim, a retired music teacher with a wealth of knowledge, great storytelling ability, and genuine enthusiasm, made this a very good experience.
There are really three discrete elements to your experience at the Bayernhof. The first is the dated 1980s technology and decor of the 19,000 square foot home Charles Brown built atop a spectacular ridge outside of Pittsburgh. An enthusiastic Germanophile, Mr. Brown smashed together his love of all things Bavarian with his ability to buy cutting-edge 1980s technology for his home.
The second element of your experience is the collections of automated musical devices, such as music boxes. This museum houses a mind-boggling array of incredible musical devices representing the finest and most ingenious craftsmanship.
The third element of this experience is pondering the mind of the man who made it a reality. There is a deep psychological well to get drawn into when contemplating and discussing what kind of person devotes himself to a project like this. It is not enough to simply pass it off as "eccentricity" or "vanity;" but we will leave it to you to consider. Of the three elements discussed in this review of the museum, Charles Brown's odd vanity will stay with you the longest.

A gem in the Pittsburgh area
2020年6月
How I never previously heard of this amazing museum is beyond me. A mansion housing a world-class collection of musical instruments and machines. Add a quirky millionaire that designed a home to fit his eccentric tastes that he wanted to share with the world and you have a very informative and very fun place to tour. Highly recommended!

A hidden "gem" in the Fox Chapel area!
2019年11月
I try to make sure all of my out of town friends see this museum. They are always impressed, can't understand why more people don't know about this place (even folks who lived in the Pgh area all their lives)!

The guide is interesting and personable, presents a very good overview of how this place came to be and gives a little "insight" into the personalities and "quirks" of this Pittsburgh businessman and why our city is so unique!

Unless you have no interest at all in history and what is around you, I do believe you and your guests will be impressed!

Wow!

Saw this on CBS Sunday morning and could't wait to make a trip to Pittsburgh to see this place. I was not disappointing. Jim was an amazing tour guide and was entertaining and full of good stories that made the 2.5 hours fly by. The hundreds of music players are a treat, but Jim was the star of the show. You don't have to be a fan of music boxes/players but you will enjoy them nonetheless. Try not to get drunk counting the wet bars--in the open and hidden in all sorts of places. Same with the bookcases that lead to secret entrances. The man who owned the place.owned the place had 283 blue oxford shirts. Enough said about him and his eccentric ways.

Unique, eccentric museum
2019年10月
The tour of this former private residence is an entertaining look into the life and efforts of a mostly private successful businessman to create an eternal legacy. The house itself, with secret passageways and imported architectural features, is well worth the modest admission price. But the real stars of the tour are the many music machines. Beautifully restored, the multiple machines, most over 100 years old, are amazing to see and even more to hear. The result is a very enjoyable two and a half hour tour.

One of a kind gem

Well hidden surprise, it was a wonderful afternoon hearing about Charlie and his eccentric lifestyle. One surprise after another, very interesting & unique property. Definitely a must see, well worth the time. We talked with many locals that weren't aware it existed.

What an experience and what a story. There is just too much to tell you about this "home" or "museum" and the man who made this his life's work. We couldn't believe all the wonderful furnishings and automated music machines. You will spend over two hours here and the docent who guided us through the house was a font of knowledge and really was most personable and brought everything to life. As he said, "Pay at the end, if you don't like the tour don't pay." What was NOT to like? Incredible. Enjoy your afternoon here. Well worth the time.

Worth seeing just for the house and view
2019年9月
Bayernhof is a hidden gem well off the beaten path. You need to book tours in advance and be prepared to spend 2 1/2 hours. I would allow extra time to find it, a road was closed and we had to look for another route. Our tour guide was Jim who made the tour more interesting with his stories and demeanor. I didn't have much interest in mechanical music boxes (which the owner procured so that the house could become a museum after his passing) but the 19000 square foot home with an amazing view was enough to hold my interest. Be prepared to traverse a circular staircase or two. There are many options to sit along the way and you are actually encouraged to do so. I won't spoil the several surprises along the way
