Interesting, informative and bustling

Got the train for the short trip from Goathland to Grosmont and very glad we did. The station is extremely well maintained with great features. Semaphore signalling, a traditional level crossing closing the road when the trains are arriving / departing and historic little touches everywhere. A short walk through the tunnel takes you to the engine sheds where you can see the engines being worked on close-up. Very interesting and no charge to take a look around. A great little shop as well full of railway memorabilia. Helpful staff on hand everywhere - and a more than adequate refreshment room on the platform. What particularly surprised me was the sheer volume of trains coming and going - always something happening and was a joy to see and be taken back to days gone by. A thoroughly enjoyable visit.

Late review here as I forgot but this was our 2nd year running on the Xmas train from grosmont. They have made the station really accessible considering it’s age. Every single member of staff could not be more helpful. I booked the accessible car as I use a mobility scooter. What I love about this is that the train haas a fully accessible toilet and space so if I want to stay seated in my scooter I can or if I want to transfer to a seat I can easily which is what I do. The experience is great, best toys for the kids ever and Santa is great. Can’t wait to go again as it’s now our new tradition as a family. Thank you for making it all so inclusive.

Very welcoming station with free access to the engine sheds and workshops, looking down on engines in for maintenance, and access to a well stocked railway model shop. It isn't too easy to find so go through the tunnel footpath adjacent to the railway tunnel.

This is a great station, with a clear focus on old steam trains and that is something it does really well. There used to be three coffee shops in Grosmont where weary walkers could rest and recuperate before getting the train back to their place of origin. Sadly the only coffee shop now open over the busy Easter weekend was the one at the station... it is terrible. Both my coffee and my wife's tea were undrinkable and that says a lot, in fact I can't begin to explain how bad they were. Luckily the train memorabilia and quaint nature of the station made up for it but I'm still in shock at how bad the beverages were.

Engine sheds

We were looking at one of the steam trains that was about to depart Whitby station when one of the nymr employees asked us if we were waiting to get on. When we informed her we'd actually just come to look at the train she helpfully explained we could go to Grosmont station to look at the engine sheds even if we weren't using the strains. We therefore decided to do this the following day. Parking is available at the station for £5 per day but when we arrived it was full. There was a carpark further down the road but we managed to park on the roadside for free. We had a look around the station and then went over the road and under the bridge to the sheds. We had a good look around and also went into the shop. We had a good time at the station and goods sheds which we found interesting but there were a few times when we weren't sure whether we were allowed in a certain area or not so a bit more signage might be useful.

Santa Train

We went on the Santa train Sunday 18th December, unfortunately we found it grossly underwhelming! We were expecting a really magical experience for the children, sadly this wasn’t the case and we were left feeing very let down, my little boy who is only 3 questioned the santa straight away, his costume seemed very cheap, and due to the price of tickets we were expecting something abit more! The elf entertainer was happy and cheerful, but selling raffle tickets at £1 a slip for one box of celebration chocolates for the whole train? Could you not Atleast offer a box per carriage? the gift from Santa was fair but all in all I would not recommend this trip to my friends and family and will not be returning in the future. Sorry Santa train you really missed the mark this time around!

Very poor experience

Appalled!... terribly cold, from start to finish, though food and staff were both very good , the atmosphere wasn't good at all, no Christmas spirit what so ever, temperature must have been at most, 10'c, blankets wer to hand but the experience was spoiled by the bitter coldness , to think NYR take £155. Per couple for a very very disappointing experience. Will never recommend.

Sir Nigel Gresley.

We had booked for the last trip of the day, on the Sir Nigel Gresley steam experience,from Grosmont to Pickering and back. Once again, parking was a nightmare, particularly for people with disabilities. We had to park in the woods, then clamber with the utmost difficulty, over the footbridge, to get to the platform. I don't mind paying for parking but I want total ease of access and not too far to walk. From the footbridge we had to walk all the way down to the toilets, following our long drive. The train eventually arrived and stopped so far down the platform, that it was almost in Whitby. Needless to say, our carriage was the furthest away.

On board the beautiful old carriage, the seats were rather cramped and would have been even more so, when someone sat in the seats facing us. Fortunately there was plenty of room available and we relocated for more comfort. Our souvenir jute bags were very nice and contained goodies to remind you of the days experience. Old Nige looked superb and will look even more superb when returned to it's usual blue colour. Trains were running late and it was a bit of a stop start journey but you could feel the power of this magnificent beast, waiting to be unleashed, yet being held back due to the limitations of the line. It was rather like a thoroughbred race horse, with three of it's legs fastened together.

The journey was delightful and it was lovely to see the Moors, bedecked in their Autumnal coats. There was a buffet car onboard and all the staff were very pleasant. We had a thoroughly enjoyable day but for arriving and departing. We returned to Grosmont on the opposite platform, once again, way, way down. This meant a long walk from the carriage to the level crossing, over the lines and all the way back along the other side, to the dreaded footbridge, which I had to struggle over again. This was a five star experience but they are always going to lose a star until they sort out the parking.

Excellent dining experience

Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear that you had a problem parking. I think that if the disabled spaces in our car park are full and you have to park in the public car park you would probably be best walking down on the pavement by the road, although there is a 30 yard stretch under the rail bridge where there isn't a footpath. We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed your trip with Sir Nigel - certainly a memorable experience.

Hi. You can visit the engine sheds independently. No need to be part of a tour. They are across the road from the station. Cross the road & go through the tunnel. You are able to wander around at your leisure however there are cordons about so you can't really just go in and wander about willy nilly. Perhaps you could do this as part of a tour, i'm not sure. However its still worth a visit for what you can see through the cordons.

As already said, open access 24/7 but obviously not the shop. cafe and toilets. It is worth noting that the winter changes all the services: "Daily services finish on the 4th November. Winter Services run between Pickering and Grosmont on the following dates: 27 to 31 December 2018; 1 January 2019; 16 to 24 February 2019.

I would like to know if dogs ( I have two small toy breed....well behaved ones!), are allowed entrance to Grosmont Railway Station, and if so, are they allowed to travel on board the train with me?. I will be visiting this area in October 2018, and would like to visit the Station. Thank you.

Hello, saw several people with dogs at the station and on the train so I’d assume you are good. Don’t know if they charge for dogs on the train... check the NYMR web site. Have fun
