Extremely well preserved and lovely features all over the place - milk churns and porter trolleys on the platform, traditional signage, buildings well maintained. Very interesting video / audio screening in what appeared to be an authentic guards van as well. Obviously is still a working station and when you see the steam locomotives coming through just makes you want to jump on one and take a ride. Which we did.

A great station that is hardly changed from the original building.
You can catch a steam train from here and have a lovely trip across The North Yorkshire Moors.

Made a quick stop in Goathland on route over the moors to Whitby for the day.
Parked in the village, had a wander around the 'Aidensfield' locations and then to the station. Loved that you can walk over the tracks to a fab viewpoint ... where the heather was purple in late August. Plus, it's free if you're not riding the trains.
Had a drink from the tea room (cakes didn't look that appealing sadly) and sat in the sun waiting for the diesel trains to pass. Shame we didn't get to see steam engines but understandably the risk of lineside fires was just too great.
The highlight ...
Was someone driving through, windows down and the Heartbeat theme tune playing full blast. It amused us so much that we attempted to recreate as we left in our car, but we were vastly unprepared and only got it going at the village border!

Fabulous day out. Heartbeat must!! Video of the steam train coming in. Weather was likened to a summers day, station foreman so friendly.

The station looks just like it does on the TV series. Very expensive to go on the train but a lovely journey to Pickering and back - bonus was our dog was allowed on the train and in the tea room. Tea room prices and choice OK but nothing spectacular. Handy parking right outside the station.

If you’re a fan of Heartbeat TV series then a trip to Goathland (better known as Aidensfield) is a must. The train station is beautiful and is like stepping into a time warp back to the 60’s. This station was also in one of the Harry Potter movies.

Too many irresponsible dog owners why take a dog somewhere there are sheep roaming freely then allowing you dog to bark uncontrollable frightening the sheep and other dogs, this spoilt it for many and was disturbing for small children to see

We visited when the NYMR steam gala was running. The station is exceptionally well kept. The volunteer staff quite obviously take a pride in their work and are very professional. We visited the beer fest on the station (in an old engine shed, now a cafe) and we're surprised when we found ourselves sitting in an old goods wagon at raised floor level, very clever! All in all well worth a visit.

Situated not far from Pickering North Yorkshire is the charming village of goathland was used by itv a few years ago as Aidensfield in the tv series Heartbeat we arrived on a special heartbeat day a lot of the original vehicles used in the series where on display also signing autographs where actors Tricia pentode (Gina) and David Lonsdale (David in the garage) you can visit the shops that where used in the program the pub used as the Aidensfield arms and scripps garage a short walk down hill in goathland is the station this is a fascinating visit where you can see actual steam trains puff through or even take a trip on one the station featured in heartbeat and the line has also featured in Harry Potter films and most recently the latest mission impossible and Indiana Jones 5 due out next year if your a fan of heartbeat you must visit here

I’m staying in Whitby this summer can I get a train from there to the station easily?

You can get the seaside express to goathland station. This is a pre booked train only. It’s an historic train often steam, just like Harry Potter but when we used it used it was a diesel replacement due to fire risk during last summers drought. Lovely relaxing way to travel and see the countryside.

settimana prossima sarò nello Yorkshire. Ho affitato una macchina però volevo dedicare una giornata con il treno a vapore ma non so quale stazione è meglio: se Pickering, Goathland o Whitby, dove lasciare la macchina e tipo di biglietto fare.

You will all get onto the station easily and there is a coach and car park nearby. I don’t know about the cafe booking

Hi
Can you let me know if I can book a short steam train journey from Goathland to Whitby Bay? If so, how much will it cost and can we get a return ticket? It's for a special occasion for my mum who has never been to Whitby bay before or on a steam train so I thought for a fantastic day out, we could spend a short amount of time of steam train to Whitby bay and then spend most of our day at Whitby bay, then at around 5pm get the steam train back from Whitby bay to Goathland train station where we can collect our car and drive home back to Manchester. We want to experience the steam train but not spend the majority of our day on it because the main highlight for mum will be spent at Whitby bay and we only have 1 day to do this which is Sat 2 June mum's birthday.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

What a lovely idea. Check out the North Yorkshire Moors Railway website for timetable, fares and pre-booking. I think you will be able to get a train from Goathland and return later for about £20 return pp. Be aware that the station car park at Goathland is small and a bigger car park is nearer the village about 10 mins walk away some of which is on a hill. Have a great day out.

Plenty of parking at the station, £3.50 for the day and all the money goes to the upkeep of the railway.

you can book online but you can buy At the ticket office on the station. enjoy your trip ...if you get chance to go over the train line and out the white gate there is a lovely walks over the Moor.
