We rented a houseboat from Nicols, in Plagny.
It was a terrible experience in particular due to the abrupt and truly unacceptable manner of the rude base manager.
For this reason I can only recommend making the same mistake as me, renting from others but not from Nicols. For the rest you will enjoy a beautiful region

The one-week trip on the canal was enjoyable, BUT we were surprised and appalled as we understood that we had to flush our toilet wastewater right into the canal! We had expected the boat to be equipped with a wastewater tank and facilities to empty it along the way. This was in May, but dirt was already accumulating in and at the locks. I don't want to know what it looks and smells like in the peak season in the heat of the summer! I really hope the canal authorities forbid this practice! Who wants to go on vacation in a septic tank?

We cruised the Nivernais Canal from Tannay to Migennes in September, very enjoyable time. We booked a Vision 4 boat with Le Boat, we were 3 couples and used the 4th cabin for luggage, the cabins are quite tight. The living area is spacious and comfortable, and we spent a lot of time on the top deck (but didn't use the canopy much as there are a lot of bridges). The boat was a bit aged but still quite modern and well appointed, we did need to run the generator in the evenings for heat and hot water, as we couldn't always get shore power points at our stops. The boat has 220v for phone chargers and laptops, even when moored and not connected to shore power. We did our initial shopping at the supermarket in Tannay, which is about 3km from the le Boat depot, we had bikes for all of us and the carry bags hung from the handle bars OK (but if we had thought about it in advance we would have booked a taxi to take us up to Tannay shops). Bike trips included going up to Dourncy, Irancy (wineries, Hossette gallery), and the fish farm at Pregilbert, but otherwise it was just fun riding along the canal path. The wine cave at Bailly is close enough to walk. First night we just parked at Asnois as there isn't really enough time to get to Clamency on day 1. Most towns had restaurants but we didn't pre-book at the nice restaurant at Accolay (on the branch canal) and they were full. A visit to Vezelay is a must, but probably too far to cycle on the little hired bikes, we booked a taxi from Clamecy. Last night was spent at Migennes, not really much choice because of hand-over at 9 a.m., just a short 10-minute walk to the station for train back to Paris, which leaves at about 9 a.m. but Le Boat kindly arranged an early check-out. Very different experience from previous Avalon cruises in France, and very enjoyable.

This was our 5th self-drive boating holiday in France and our 4th with Le Boat. It is a good company, generally well-organised, with only a couple of issues e.g. they charge for fuel usage by the engine hours, not the quantity used, meaning that if you go flat out (and potentially wreck the boat) you pay less. Crazy!
Also, for the first 3 trips we hired a Grand Classique boat, made in England. It was a great design, a quality construction, very user-friendly, easy to drive etc. But for this latest trip we were 'upgraded' from a Salsa B (which we requested) to a Vision. DON'T EVER HIRE A VISION! This boat is horrible. The sides are too narrow to easily or safely walk around the outside, the bathrooms exhaust into the bedroom, steaming it up and making it mouldy and damp. It can only be safely driven from up top - not pleasant in the rain; but it has to be started down below, so not easy to turn the motor on and off to save fuel in slow locks. The workmanship of construction is shoddy. There is no storage space for food, and minimal for possessions. The power point in the bedroom is up near the ceiling! The model we took had 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms - unnecessary - share bathrooms leave more space for storage which is a plus for the Classique. And the Vision is like a block of flats to drive, compared to the Grand Classique.
Despite the disappointment in the boat we had a fabulous holiday, as we have done the previous 4 times.

My friends and I finally had the chance to travel the Canal du Nivernais on Barge Luciole after more than 2 years of delays due to the Covid Pandemic. The beauty of the Canal was more than I expected. The staff on the barge were the epitome of professional and service orientation. The food that the chef put out was incredible!
Unfortunately, the professionalism of the barge owner was sorely lacking. Our group consisted of a couple of recent cancer survivors and others with chronic illnesses. We had all been practicing safe protocols for the last two years to stay healthy and assumed we would be able to do the same on the barge. Before the trip departed, we inquired about the owner's protocol should someone become ill with Covid on the trip. We were assured by the owner of the barge that everything would be done to support the person who became ill, but to ensure our health and safety all should have travel insurance to cover the needs for sick care if we needed to be removed from the barge.
Much to our surprise and dismay, 3 of her other guests joined the trip knowing they were positive for Covid. There was no regard by the owner to acknowledge our concerns/fears about being exposed to a communicable disease. In fact, she took our group to task for making her other guests "feel uncomfortable" because we asked for social distancing and masking to be enforced. She was clear with us the infected guests would not be removed from the barge and it was our group who needed to make an effort to lower the tension on board. Us lower the tension? We were NOT the cause of the tension! Evidently, her revenue was more important than the health of her other guests and crew.
Within 24 hours of departure from the barge, one of the cancer survivors from the group tested positive for Covid. The owner truly had no plan as to how to handle the situation when someone became ill on board and did not feel she had to do anything differently going forward.
As I have said, the staff were the epitome of everything you could hope for on a vacation and certainly deserve a "5" star rating under normal circumstances. The same cannot be said for the owner of the barge

We rented our houseboat type Euroclassic 139 in Tannay from France Afloat. I say "we" because we are 6 close friends who have been together for 40 years. The boat was, in terms of comfort, a pleasant surprise. Well finished, wooden interior, three cabins with three bathrooms. Equipped with everything, limited but comfortable living space. Even more limited is the cooking space, considering the six people to feed. The only criticism is the bicycles that are not suitable for women and also without tools to change the height of the saddle. The Nirvernais Canal we sailed to Vermenton is full of algae in places, due to poor maintenance during the Covid pandemic period. This caused a problem with the propeller, slowing down navigation. However, the technical intervention by France Afloat was timely and effective and allowed us to continue sailing immediately. Many thanks to the friendly Frederic.
Finally, a piece of advice for everyone:
The Canal du Nivernais, although not suitable for swimming, offers wonderful green spaces, beautiful sunsets and a lot of peace and quiet. Unfortunately, however, it is not at all easy to find restaurants, supermarkets or shops along the way. So stock up on everything at the start of the cruise and at every possible opportunity. Otherwise you risk going on a strict diet.
However highly recommended experience.

Hi, we are travelling from Migennes to Tannay in early September, is 10 days enough time as we wish to look at St-Florentin, Joigny and Vermenton along the way. Are those towns worth a look, Also is there a canal via duct along the route. Many thanks

Hello, we started at Joigny and headed North... some of us wanted a leisurely pace others wanted to get 'somewhere" we found it important to know where to stop for water, showers and food! some towns had all these services some had very little. Do a little research and planning... its about the trip the scenery etc not just getting to a town. There is a biking, walking path all along the canal... the loch keeper drives his car to your next spot so you need to be able to tell him where you are stopping!! ps NO lochs open during 12-1 pm for lunch. Mondays and Tuesdays many shops and cafes are closed for the day!! Plan ahead for food!

We want a leisurely pace we start and return at the Corbigny base. :will it be better to head north toward Auxerre or south towards Decize? How far can re reasonable expect to get going north with time for stopping for long lunches and going thru the locks?
thank you

Hi, we are hoping to self drive - well canal/barge - down the Canal du Nivernais in September this year! Any advice on best places to pull up too would be greatly appreciated even though your trip was back in 2016. You booked with Locaboat which actual boat did you choose? We are 2 couples and I'm torn between the Penichette and the Europa - bit worried that the Europa just won't give us enough space! So any personal advice would be great!
Thanks in advance :)

Hi, Sally. What would you like to know about this attraction?
I would like to know if the towns are along the route to get provisions or do we have to walk/cycle to towns.
撰写日期:2017年9月24日
Hi Sally
Some towns are adjacent to the canal and I would recommend stocking up on some supplies at these spots. Depending on your route, certainly look at when the market days are as this is a great way to get super fresh produce and have a lot of fun sampling local producers’ wares. Joigny, Auxerre. Clamency are all bigger towns. Between Clamency and Tannay there was not much. We cycled really far and came back empty-handed. Mailly la ville has a very pleasant cafe called Snack beside the canal. Hope this helps!

We are heading on a week cruise on the Nivernais from Migennes to Tannay in July 2017. Trying to find a map with the towns we will pass on the way and how far it is to cycle to them from the river. Any information on places to restock supplies, market days or not-to-be-missed sights will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi there - I am doing a very similar trip in September and went online to the official canal-du-nivernais web - found some brochures which they posted out to me that included a really good map. Also the information from our barge hire (Locaboat) had really good information too. I have also found Google Maps to be an excellent tool for investigating how far places are from the canal. Reviews from past travelers are also welcomed for their tips so I will ensure I will be posting mine afterwards to help others in the future.

From Charles de Gaulle airport we took a taxi to Paris Bercy rail station (too complicated and time-consuming to take a train), then purchase a ticket to Corbigny station. You have to change at Auxerre, hop on a bus at the station which takes you to Corbigny station - all on the ticket you purchased at Bercy. You have to organise with Locaboat to pick you up at the station to take you to the Locaboat depot (about 10 minutes). Sounds complicated, but all part of the fun.
