We visited in March 2023 when the Sakura was out early in Tokyo so the weather was warm and sunny but the resorts still had snow. So for a family learning to ski the combination was great.
We learned to ski with the fantastic Hakuba47 Ski Academy - enjoyed some lovely food and sampled the onsen.
While we didn't take part the snowboard park at Hakuba47 looked amazing.
We travelled from Tokyo via the Shinkansen and the bus from Nagano, which was quite efficient.

In love. There and back again. Charming skiing arena, wonderful snow, slopes are well prepared and fun to ski. Surrounding food places are enjoyable.

今年もスキー場での年越しのため訪れました。コロナの影響もあってか例年に比べて人出がはるかに少なく、ゆったりと過ごせました。

Went here for skiing and Japow powder from Australia. Great little ski village amongst the alps. One pass got us 10 resorts to ski at with shuttle bus connections between each. Plenty of accomodation and restaurants and a lot of English speakers. Resorts are fun with chairlifts and gondolas. Caters to all skiing abilities.
Bit temperamental on the snow amounts (we were lucky) as it is fairly low but even so, far better snow than Australia gets.

Hi, I don't want to ski but wish to visit snow monkey and try snowmobile. If they have sledge I would like to play too. Do you think I can do all mentioned in a day?

Yes easily, I met someone there that did the tour via a snowmobile.. did you mean from Tokyo? If so then you could still do it but just quite expensive as you would need to take the bullet train to Nagano then a tour from there to the snow monkeys, long day but doable

My husband and I are heading to Hakuba for a week over New Years Eve with our son and daughter-in-law. Can you recommend a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchenette close to the lifts?

Big bear apartments is a 4 minute walk to lifts. They also provide shuttle to the local supermarket each afternoon and drop you off in town if you are going to dinner. You will have to catch cab or night shuttle back after dinner. Some restaurants are nearby but town centre is best.
Hi, I am heading to Hakuba next year and need accommodation tips. We have three families and look for accommodation walking distance to snow fields but not a large hotel, more of a Japanese feel to it. Any format is fine? ie pensions etc

Look at the Rosenheim Hotel. 3 min walk to lifts. A bit away from the hustle and bustle but still a short walk to centre of Hakuba.
Rosenheim have family rooms

Hi
Best to fly into narita airport and catch shinkansen from tokyo to nagano station. If you dont have a hire car from nagano you can catch a bus to hakuba information centre.
Big bear hakuba has a 3 bedroom chalet that is close to ski lifts

Do you ski ? Did you go with your family? Is this the place to go if one finds that ski is too difficult to learn. How many days would you recommended ?

Hello there, good folks! I am a traveler from Taiwan, and I plan to visit Hakuba this winter.
I've never done any skiing/snowboarding before, and I've only walked on light-to-medium snow. I plan to visit Japan alone, and I am not much of a nightlife person. Thus, I'm looking for a quieter experience where I can be close to nature, and learn more about the culture, history, wildlife, etc. of Hakuba. I'll be on working-holiday visa, so time restriction won't be that much of a problem.
Now, Hakuba seems to be a pretty huge place with several sights and resorts scattered across the region. Could someone please kindly help me with the following questions:
1. Of all the resorts, which one is the best for someone like me
2. What are some recommended guided tour agencies (in English)
3. How many days should one spend in Hakuba
4. Does one need to be loaded with cash in order to enjoy one's time there--is this location backpacker-friendly
That's all I have to ask for now. Thanks in advance!

Hakuba was my favourite part of Japan when I visited and I wish I spent more time there.
I stayed near Goryu - probably the easiest place for beginner skiers and snowboarders.
I think time spent really depends on how much you love the snow. I could spend a season there easily...but I would board nearly every day. But that's me.
You can get by without spending crazy amounts, there are backpackers and hostels around but if your staying long term I would definitely book asap. 7/11s in japan are amazing for budget eats and alot of the restaurants wont break the bank (some will so check tripadvisor first!)
No idea on the guided tours side of things sorry.
Hope this helps!

Hi, we're travelling to Japan in April but I just want to know if it's worth visiting this area for the snow/skiing or if the snow will be gone by then? It'd likely be later April that we visit. Thanks

Every year the season varies. In 2017 there was not much skiing in April. April is best for cherry blossoms
